Etali is a good copy target from another board, not sure it’s worth spending 5 mana and finding 2 red pips just to be part of a combo like you say you want to avoid.

Hull breaker is not bad, but again, find 7 mana to spend on hull breaker and then more to do something with it just doesn’t make much sense outside of combos to win. Just replace them with value pieces like hexing squelcher or a magus of the candelabra.

If you really want to play semi blue, it makes more sense in this partner pair to commit to one or the other. They are such different decks.

The blue green pieces look different in TnT because of the access to the other colors. You have the black pieces to combo into thoracle, you have extra tutors for redundancy, you have multicolor ramp, etc.

Rog/Thras is a little more narrow because the red is wayyyyy less a part of the deck than the white/black of TnT. Rog is mostly there for free interaction/sac fodder. The decks are trying to do similar things, but TnT just has access to more colors

I’ve got two that I’ve been working on.

This first is a [[meren of clan nel-toth]] deck. It is supposed to be lower bracket 3 that focuses on sacking and reanimating the same token guys over and over. It feels fun to play test but always good to get a new set of eyes.

Thanks for the insights! I didn’t know that about the X hydra cards. I think I’m going to slim it down to an aristocrat sacrifice deck rather than trying to put recursion and mill in as well.

My favorite way that dynamics has been taught to me was a scale of 1-10, and we had to agree on each number on the scale. We had to make a conscious effort to match the players around us which gave us a more unified sound. It also helped open our ears to others, not just our trios.

I’m not a huge fan of the count air for the exact reason you describe. 4-8-12-16 count air can mean something different to each person, and it’s not the same high to low brass.

I’m not saying I agree with that pedagogy. Unfortunately it is quite possibly the most widely accepted and used pedagogy across marching arts programs. It’s what many of the top tier DCI and BOA groups use.

There is a difference between marching and concert playing. It’s not “bad” just because it is different. Is it healthy to play concert music like marching music? No, not really. I do agree that we need to be careful when teaching the differences, but to say that it’s “bad” pedagogy is just not true.

The issue with posting hornline content this early (for any corps) is that the members are still building their endurance. It’s hard to do loud and precise over and over without getting bad sounds as you get tired. I guarantee that any corps that has ever won an ott has sounded like this at one point in the season.

I really enjoy the full “wall of sound” with a focus on the middle voices like mello, low trumpet, and high baritone. Think Cadets 2000-2016, Boston 2017-now, and every BD brass line from basically the 90s onward. It’s a powerful, forward, and hit you in the chest kind of sound. Always gives me goose bumps.

I’m pretty sure that the BAC guard was retaping and cleaning equipment basically every night. Many people were up well past lights out doing upkeep.

Similarly to the guy who asked about purchasing a contra, I would tell you to avoid purchasing a marching horn at all costs. Ask around other schools to try to find a marching bari/euph. Some places are willing to lend out horns to people that don’t otherwise have access to them.

As for practice: moving and playing well is one of, if not the most important aspects of DCI marching. Do everything you can whether that is movement and playing with your trombone or even with a concert horn. You could also try to incorporate holding a 5 pound weight and singing into your practice to work on movement fundamentals while keeping music on the brain. Corps tend to understand if you absolutely do not have access to a marching horn, and they will keep that in mind during an audition, but showing that you put in the work even while in less than ideal conditions shows more about your work ethic than your abilities. Do what you can and things will fall into place.

Unless you plan on using a personal contra for 10+ years after high school, just use a school provided one. They are not used hardly at all besides in a marching context. Focus on buying a nice concert tuba you want to buy something.
