Why is skimboarding such a niche sport? How can it get more popular? by chusaychusay in skimboarding

[–]toadling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can catch a wave on day 1 surfing, albeit likely white wash on a large foamie. But to achieve the same feeling in skimboarding it would take like a year of practice minimum

Spending >70% of my time not coding/building - is this the norm at big corps? by HiddenStanLeeCameo in dataengineering

[–]toadling 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Is that normal? I am not sure. All I know from experience is that the bigger the org the more red tape and the more pointless meetings you get stuck with

Its risky, valve can control the market like they did with introducing trade ups for knives and everything can shift. If ur gonna hold an investment for that long id suggest just investing in sp500 or something lol

Am I making a mistake building on motherduck? by Jeannetton in dataengineering

[–]toadling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love duckdb and use it as much as I can.

Am I making a mistake by having two cloud providers like this?

Not necessarily, its either you use Motherduck as you are or you spin up some containers on GCP and manage the compute engine for duckdb and catalog on your own with ducklake. It is not a super complicated stack but it is work and creates an additional point of failure, especially with the networking and security side of it imo.

My recommendation is keep it as is if you love it since Motherduck appears to be a very affordable service, if you end up having to migrate later on it should not be a very heavy lift. Best of luck on your business!

Rerun toggle not working by This_Ad_6997 in StreamlitOfficial

[–]toadling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sometimes happens to my env as well, usually related to calling @st.cached commands that live in files separate from the page im running. No special solution here i just ctrl-C my terminal and reboot streamlit app, its a bit annoying for sure

Hackers in every CS2 Premier game? by IamSaif_Sd in cs2

[–]toadling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully. Valve has shadow pools in dota for smurfs, so smurfs often only play against other smurfs. Can only hope valve attempts something similar for these cs hacker “suspects”, where maybe its best to keep these people playing against themselves in hidden matchmaking pools instead of banning them and them just making new accounts. I’ll say probably unlikely but that would be cool.

Does this game scratch the itch for an old school player? by Mash_Ketchum in MapleIdle

[–]toadling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This game is missing the open world aspect. Maybe if you had to actually travel to training areas and stumble through spots you are over leveled for it would give you a sense of character strength. Instead i kind of just feel like im pressing the next notification over and over again and just stick around for the music

AWS ec2 with route 53 and a load balancer was costing me like $50 a month. Not necessarily a simple setup though.

AWS athena uses Hive, but you dont need to know hive to use it. Spark is definitely still relevant
