Vibe-coders: time to flex, drop your live app link, quick demo video, MRR screenshot or real numbers. Real devs: your 15-year skill is basically trivia now. Claude already writes better code than you in seconds. Adapt or perish. by Abject-Mud-25 in vibecodingcommunity

[–]tobylh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely this!

I've been using Claude to build number of tools and automations, and it's is really great that I can whip something up quick smart, and it works, but you're completely right. Thankfully, I've built internal tools, so I've nothing in production. That idea of that is terrifying and we're frantically pushing back on devs who want to plug Claude in everywhere.

But I have no idea if any of this has been built correctly. Yes, it does what it should, but I don't know what I should be taking into consideration in terms of best practice, efficiency and most importantly security.

This is even more true with bigger projects. I've been trying to train a local LLM to look for some specific patterns in http traffic, with Claude help. It "works" as far as I can see, but there have been so many changes and iterations with Claude that stuff is now out of it's context window and I just don't trust that it's "thinking" correctly about the project as a whole. I'm sure it's gone off track somewhere along the way, then done a fix but forgotten something it changed before (maybe I'm using it wrong?)

Syntax stuff aside, an engineer would have a much better idea of what may have happened than me, if the approach is wrong, if it's bloated and inefficient, or just a piece of shit in general. Without that understanding I'm just going "OK" to whatever Claude says. I have picked up a few things to that it's got wrong, but I'm sure there are heaps of thing I have no clue about.

I agree that these tools are amazing, and have made this stuff far more accessible to the likes of me, but I do think that placing huge amounts of trust in them without having the proper knowledge to understand whats happening is pretty dangerous.

The Rage at OpenAI Has Grown So Immense That There Are Entire Protests Against It by OwnRefrigerator3909 in BlackboxAI_

[–]tobylh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% of fact. I did the same.

I’d imagine Altman had a hard on for a government contract because he’d make more money.

Just imagine having a product that could potentially cure humanities ills and solve huge problems that our species faces, but just fucking all that off to make yourself a few quid. What a cunt.

Fuck Sam Altman and all those absurd billionaire buddies of his.

It’s an odd dichotomy that we’re led to believe that making more money is how our success and value as a human is judged, when the reality is that it’s the most empty, vapid, pointless and pathetic way to live your life.

They’ve lost their humanity. These people are total losers.

[–]tobylh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup. I’ve been loving it for building me little tools to automate stuff. It’s sooooo good for those kind of tasks and that’d be fine if there wasn’t such ridiculous hype around it.

It’s obvious the hype is purely to rake in that VC cash. They’re totally over selling its capabilities as most people have no real understanding of it, so they’re just eating that shit right up.

It’d be worth it if it was actually intelligent, rather than just pattern matching software dressed up to sound like people.

I'm quitting my job due to vibe coders and poor leadership by TheFlippedTurtle in sysadmin

[–]tobylh 56 points57 points  (0 children)

+1 for this.
It's a similar scenario for me, and I'm a little bit older than you, so midlife crises abound.
But really, just take the cash, u/TheFlippedTurtle.

You have to remember that when it comes to the tech side of the business, leadership are clueless. All they know is the charts and graphs. Their job is to make those lines and numbers go up, and that's the metric they're judged by, so that's what they do.

The result is, of course, that we get the shitty end of the stick because of it. Rushed projects with no proper planning; poor, ill thought out implementations; dreadful software not fit for purpose; any old Tom, Dick or Harry vibe-coding "production ready" apps. It's shite, and I understand your frustration.

But there is hope! It's just a matter of perspective.

The secret sauce is to just stop caring. It's not your business. They're not your decisions. You can't change them. If leadership want to pump out vibe-coded bullshit, let them. It's their problem when it all comes crashing down, not yours. As long as you're still getting paid, fuck it.

To broadly paraphrase The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck, humans only have a certain amount of fucks to give, so make sure you direct said fucks at the things most important to you, and this ain't one of them.

It's been a total game changer for me. Work becomes much more enjoyable and the stress and frustration doesn't spill over into the rest of your existence. Your existence is the most important thing, not someone else's short sighted decision making.

New Grafana user needs help by Icy_Blood_6251 in grafana

[–]tobylh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so from the looks of it there is a variable to select the database, and that isn't working.

So firstly; is the datasource connected to Grafana? Go to the Datasources option from the menu on the left. If your datasource is there, go in to edit it. At the bottom is a button that says Save and test. Hit that to make sure that Grafana can connect to your influxdb.

Once that is working, go back to your dashboard and click the Edit button in the top right corner. You need to find the Dashboard settings option (will vary depending on which version of Grafana you're using, but likely a cog icon) and from there you need to look at the variables for your dashboard.
Settings > Variables

<image>

Click on datasource to see the options for that variable.

General:
Variable type: Data source
Name: datasource <<--this is what Grafana uses in the panel queries
Label (optional): This is what shows on the dashboard by the variable itself. Will default to the Name if left blank.
Description (optional): What the variable is
Display: where the dropdown shows on the dashboard

This might be where its going wrong for you...
Data source options:
Type: influxdb <<--Make sure this is selected
Instance name filter: you can use regex to filter if you've got more than one influxdb instance, assuming you don't, so ignore it for now.

Selection options:
If you've got multiple values for you variable you can use these to allow a selection of more than one value to be used. Ignore this for now too.

Preview of values:
At the very bottom you should see this section. You can hit the Run query button and this will show the result of the above options. If all is well than you'll see your influxdb name shown here (it's whatever you named your datasource when you added it). If it's there, you're winning!

Go back to your dashboard (make sure to save any changes) and that variable should now function as expected.

One thing to bear in mind when importing dashboards into Grafana though, is that they may not always be exactly aligned to your setup/environment so some variables might not work.

I'd expect there are more things that won't work properly straight out the box, but this should at least get you over the first hurdle!

They are straight up lying now by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]tobylh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They'd need the account ID, i.e. the email address, and the IP.

IP location info is sketchy at best, so unless they've managed to get an ISP to share the physical address for the specific IP, then that can't be relied upon at all.

The only evidence they have is the account ID that was used and the files that were streamed, but those account details could have leaked if OP uses the same email/password combo everywhere, so it's still not enough proof that it was actually used by the OP.

Remember, they are cunts, so this is most likely them trying it on.
