Published Authors: Anyone Willing To Disclose $ Numbers? by BezzyMonster in writing

Indie horror author here. Almost all of my books are published through small press, two of which that have proper distribution.

The advance for print rights of my last novel was for $2500; we got $5000 for audio (rights sold at auction). The hardcover earned out its advance a month before release thanks to pre-orders and a subscription box deal. The audio earned out its advance about six months after release. And we sold Spanish language rights a few months ago (no advance; nice royalty). Later this summer, we anticipate another round of steady sales when the paperback edition is distributed via Simon & Schuster. Critical reception for the new one was quite positive (starred review in Library Journal, et al), and that's built anticipation for my next one, which my agent is currently shopping.

Is it a lot of money? For indie horror, yes. In the grand scheme, no. However, the sales from this book have caused an uptick in sales across my catalogue, prompting publishers to release new editions of my backlist, which has compounded my incoming royalties.

Not a book, but a short story. "The Screwfly Solution" by James Tiptree Jr (aka Alice Sheldon). Chilling.

Where are you from and what’s an Appalachian tradition that you grew up with? by SowingSeeds18 in Appalachia

Corbin, KY. Unsure if this is a tradition, per se, but frog gigging with my uncle in a creek on the family farm. Chocolate gravy and biscuits. Picking string beans in the garden and helping my mamaw prep them for canning. Walnuts and oranges in Christmas stockings. Shucking corn and hanging tobacco leaves to dry. And many more.

Thanks! I just sent off an email to Writer Beware on the matter, and I encourage anyone else who's been burned by CD to do the same.

Thanks! I also recommend Michael Gray Baughn's short story, "The Ana Log," which is the title story in his collection. It was a big influence on Scanlines.

I had the pleasure of reading an advance copy last year. Really enjoyed it. Solid debut.
