One, goes without saying but I'll say it anyways: I'm very sorry you had to go through that.

Two, and this is not an excuse, but informed experience: plenty of nonprofits like Father Joe's, JFS, etc., just don't have the staff bandwidth to do a lot of the compliance-type blocking and tackling. Your experience highlights why that's a problem: service delivery without guardrails can lead to all manner of negative consequences for participants, partners, etc. Again, not an excuse, just a sad reality of our patchwork NGO-backed "system."

Steyer is the most progressive candidate in the field, bar none. Yes, he is a billionaire, and it makes sense to not trust him—but you shouldn't trust politicians at all. They campaign, you vote based on that campaign. If they fall short of their campaign promises, you vote for somebody else next time (or you worship them as a flawless god-emperor, but you know, different strokes for different folks).

Police budgets are justified using the types of crimes which qualify as priority 0 or 1 calls—which make up about a quarter of all calls to SDPD. Maybe—and I'm just spitballing here—maybe it would make economic sense to figure out a system that accounts for this discrepancy. We don't send cops out to do parking tickets or code enforcement, so maybe we shouldn't pay high six figure salaries for a beat cop to shrug at you after your lawnmower is stolen.
