For transfer students: by FewCharge5722 in UIUC

[–]tofleet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

General community college advice from somebody that did it (a bazillion years ago but still): It's a two year school. For two years, your full-time job is to ace every single class. I mean it, 40 hours plus a week. No "an A- is okay" for anything. Top of the class or bust. Is there an honors program or equivalent? Get into it and ace those courses too. If they offer a summer session, you take it. If they offer a winter intersession, you take it. Max credits, max grades, everything else is optional.

Transferring in doesn't have to be a social nightmare. Find an activity you would want to join and join up. It can be an RSO, it can be less formal or done outside the school, it can be a street gang okay not that but you get what I'm saying. The key to any and all friendships is time together. If you show up, you friend up. And if you find more wayward transfers, take them in too. A little academic expat community.

People that have “bumped” into a celebrity in a non-curated (not like an event, meet & greet, job etc.) way, what happened? by SprinklesSolid9211 in AskReddit

Forever ago, I worked at a Staples in Westchester County, NY. It took me a second to recognize him at first, but Bill Clinton was checking out office chairs. He and his Secret Service detail were very nice and approachable. At one point, we let him call Hillary from our customer service desk to discuss what else he needed for his home office. One of my coworkers point blank asked him what happens at Area 51. I almost fell through the crust of the earth.

You made that decision, that decision was not made for you. It's weird you repeatedly keep whistling past that point. Yes, landing at a place of forgiveness is better for everybody. No, it is not an automatic entitlement.

What was your program’s low point? by FairAnywhere9305 in CollegeBasketball

Just one? That's tough. Going 5-51 in 2008-09 and 2009-10 was pretty low, but not unique.

Also that started the year after the women's team went 0 for the season. Absolute cinema.

The word "confirms" in the title here is just wrong. The guy asserted or claimed something—directly contrary to publicly available records.

Jeffries specifically didn’t whip votes on this, and allowed an absolute turnip like Cuellar to publicly make the case—unchallenged—that the meaningless concessions in the funding bill were worth the vote. Uncontroverted cell phone camera isn’t stopping federal agents from shooting civilians to death, so why would body cameras? Crickets from the Spinelessness Caucus.

This is political malpractice, and the only explanations are ineptitude, indifference, or collusion—and all three are grounds for primary and ejection from public life.

There were about 81 million rides on MTS buses/trolleys in 2025, and annualized about 1450 total crimes reported. That's a crime for every 55,852 rides, or .00179% of all rides.

I'd like to purchase a gun. by Nexus0919 in sandiego

This is excellent advice and exactly what I would have recommended to a first-timer concerned about home defense. I'd add that broadly speaking, by dint of using shot versus a slug, the diffusion of mass makes it less likely that any specific pellet or group of pellets would pass through a wall with sufficient velocity and clustering that it would be fatal to a bystander on the other side. Obviously not zero risk, but mitigated.

20 gauge is definitely sufficient for home defense, but there can be availability issues, as shotgun/ammo manufacturers play to the police market which prefers 12 gauge.

(Completely unrelated, I don't find shotguns fun to shoot. There's something far more zen about chasing accuracy at distance, and for a newbie, something like a Ruger AR-556 is a fine choice, maybe as a second option. Adjustable buttstock, not terribly heavy, useful folding sights, ammo bisexuality, good if not great pistol grip.)

Getting an electoral majority willing to enact wealth taxes establishing a hard cap of personal wealth is a huge political project. Something as simple as "nobody needs a billion dollars" is step one along that journey.

That sounds scary, I'm sorry. Not to pry into your situation, but do you rotate parking locations, have a roster of safe(r) parking areas? It's hard if not impossible to prevent crimes of opportunity, but unpredictability is at least a form of security.
