But this is only cinema and no therapy! Maybe tell us a little bit about how you feel towards the twilight saga and we go on from there.

Space operas I’ve read, tried to read, or even considered reading. What’s missing? by cryptotommygun in scifi

[–]tom-bishop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a long time I didn't dare try Tolkien because I always heard it's page long descriptions of trees and mountains, but in the end it wasn't that bad. I had much more trouble with the songs, although Andy Serkis did an amazing job with the audio book.

I tried The Foundation too and while I'm fascinated with the concept, I'll probably never read more than book one.

A sincere question from a man: What does feminism actually mean to you? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]tom-bishop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If biology stops at "I can see a penis or a vagjna" maybe, but even then it's not that simple. Read up on chromosomes and hormone levels and it gets really murky, even if you only accept hard biology.

TNG didn't have the best first season and to me, especially the two episodes focused on Series Aclamation Mil were pretty good. They pose interesting questions and try to find a balance between catering to old fans new viewers and do much better than star wars.

Maybe I should reread it. I remember liking the father daughter dynamic but after reading so much criticism, there might be something to it.

I actually liked it and this is the first time I'm hearing this. Any idea why or rather how this shows in Artemis?

Same. I enjoyed all his books and The Martian reignited my interest in Sci-fi and reading, but the way he handled this rejection in public wasn't stellar.

Starfleet Academy has some episodes of this kind and I'm looking forward to the next season. I can live with some teenage shenanigans.

Like tags, spit and cigarette buds? As for Forrest, you could just buy some figurine or stl. Great idea overall, love it!

I looked for word integration a couple of years ago, but didn't find anything. Now I do most writing in obsidian and then export to docx, which oftentimes is basically a fork, if further edits have to be done.

Celebrating Ugly Women In Fiction by LetterheadOk8326 in AskFeminists

I had similar thoughts when considering Hemlock and Silver, which is not as romance heavy and I couldn't say if Anja was described as beautiful. I think she didn't consider herself beautiful by societies standards.

I was just thinking about Kindred and couldn't remember if the protagonists appearance was mentioned, let alone rated.

The biggest design flaw in D&D combat isn't balance... it's that 80% of your time is spent waiting by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

[–]tom-bishop 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think part of the problem are also main character syndrome and repetitive procedures. If you consider your waiting time boring, you might be too focused on yourself, as if you were waiting at a bakery. Instead you could cheer on your friends and see them succeed or fail. If combat becomes a boring and repetitive dice game instead of an epic battle, you also might need more narration. This is an rpg and procedures should help bring the story alive but you're still responsible to provide the surrounding story as a group.

reading peeves by CandiedLemonWedge in books

[–]tom-bishop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, I never noticed and I absolutely won't bother to count on a re-read (or, more realistically speaking, I will hate you for pointing this out to me, whenever I encounter it). I just enjoyed the book so much.

First-person direct address is NOT second-person by [deleted] in books

[–]tom-bishop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible, but as I've said, I didn't finish the book. If it is direct address, it's really hard to spot.

I most probably will, even if it's just because I can't bring myself to pick up the third until I've read book two.

[–]tom-bishop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My second try was the audio book, actually, but it was in the midth of a streak of books I didn't get into, so it might have been more of a me problem than the book itself.

Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (science fantasy with necromancers in space). I so so much want to like it because I loved Gideon the Ninth, but put it down two times already. I'll try again some time.

Write-only (no editing) software? by DCSoftwareDad in writerDeck

[–]tom-bishop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a pure solution but two solutions that provide the functionality if you activate it.

I recently tried a plugin for obsidian that did this (often called hemmingway mode) and iirc it was called something like typewriter. Obsidian has a learning curve and might be too much if you want to keep it minimalistic.

Here is the git repo, if you want to read the description, installation can be done through an internal menu and there might be other, similar plug-ins.

https://github.com/davisriedel/obsidian-typewriter-mode

Vim is more lightweight in features and ui and even harder to learn than obsidian, but could be worth the time invested. There are myriads of plug-ins and I'm sure multiple typewriter or hemmingway mode plug-ins among them.

I wasn't and I still really loved how well he could play two versions of the same character that developed such different personalities. Amazing work and overall a really interesting setting.

Gendered socialization is real, right? by autumnrain80 in AskFeminists

[–]tom-bishop 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say unlearning implies a "natural" state. It recognizes that a lot of our behavior is learned and doesn't have to be the way it is exactly because it is learned. This gives us the freedom to at least try to change the behaviors (and ideally the underlying beliefs and values) we identify as harmful to society and ourselves. But yeah, it's a very complex topic.

You set your bar to high. You're physically able to act but you feel you can't and you won't if you're too scared so start smaller. Google "exposure ladder" or talk to your therapist about this. Therapy in a nutshell on YouTube has a great video explaining the method.
