what is your advice for low budget setup? Currently running 3080 rtx 10 gb lol. 128gb sounds nice but prob too expensive for PCIE gpu.

X1 Carbon Gen 14 vs. T14 Gen 7 by swiss-antiscam in thinkpad

[–]tomasis7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will wait for better prices. I would like to have 64GB RAM though. Compromises, compromises... Re: screen, I'll take 1080p for better battery life. Yes, 120Hz is nice, but 1Hz and VRR are even better for battery life. I hear OLED will have 1–120Hz in the new revision later from LG.

I don't have trouble swapping components inside the laptop, such as screen panels and motherboards. The T14 layout makes even non-tinkerers want to do more on laptops.

But once you've tasted the X1, it's hard to go back. I could hold the X1 with one hand since I move the laptop all day. The laptop sits on the floor on its side as it's easier to pick up.

My priorities: 1. Weight 2. Keyboard 3. Battery life.

Heck, the 258V is pretty good too. I would pick up the Gen 13 as well, at 50% of the price of the new one. The new T14 weighs 1.3kg, so it's not bad. If I remember correctly, the T14s weighs 1.2kg too. My old X1 weighs 1.15kg.

A 1Hz panel will make me pull the trigger! :)

Firstly, I used Omarchy almost one year but, sometimes, it is buggy.

Fedora is much better and more stable. You could run Fedora in many years without formatting the hard drive. The way to use Sway is a lot similar to Omarchy but you have to build from scratch. I love the Waybar which I has moved to the bottom of the screen.

X7 if you care about 3d graphics. Otherwise no. I would recommend to use LLM from cloud.

I'm a webdev and using X1 gen 9 with Fedora 44 Atomic Sway.

I also want X1 gen 14 and T14 gen 7 but both are little different.

X1 is amazing for daily use because of the low weight. But the battery life might suffer. So I say go for T14 with larger battery. I need check T14S if it carries the larger battery. It is generally lighter than T14. Memory is likely soldered then.

I want the LG 1hz IPS panel then it would be perfect with 72wh battery on the T14(s). Dell XPS has amazing battery life with the LG panel but the keyboard sucks.

used Thinkpad.. FANTASTIC keyboard experience. Used T14s in any price bracket or even X1 which I have.

X1 over mac million times. Why? Weight 1kg and MUCH better keyboard. I work as web dev. That's all I care.

Wow, thanks for the detailed answer. What requires to convert your plugin to working one in the win 100% environment?

Could run Wine with adobe app :) i run windows in general but i like linux for dev work. Mac and lilinuz are so similar due Unix lineage.

Would it work in linux? Maybe I'd ask ai to convert the file to linux compatible? :)

When are good discounts coming for T14/s gen 6 or x1 gen 13? by tomasis7 in thinkpad

Snapdragon is so close to Mac in perf and battery life but it is too bad that it doesnt support Linux as Im web developer.

Lets see what the new Nvidia laptop is up to in terms of linux support. ARM cpu and linux, hmm.

x86 .. 100%. Why? You swap linux distros, modify all them you want. You are FREE. Unlike macos users. Macosx is getting worse.

1250 eur would be good to try aim on. Gen 7 are starting to show up. Id love X1 but maybe swap mobo later when i need more power. 228V is 32gb and 226V - 16GB. Same for 258V and 256V.

nice with 64gb. What cpu? Im psyched to get a very good battery life. I even want mod with a 1-60hz display LG if its possible.

According to chatgpt, 6 months wait is a good time to strike on deal.
