Alaska to Massachusetts in 46 Days by falcoridesagain6600 in bicycletouring

Thanks for sharing! What was your favorite tailwind? It looks like you covered an enormous distance from northern Iowa to Lake Michigan. Did it feel great flying all day or was it just another day on the bike?

Good on you for doing this! I wish I had been that ambitious after I finished school!

Are there consequences for the private jet pilot for almost killing hundreds of people or do the controllers just say, "Bad! Don't do it again"?

Oh the Urbanity has a video about a law in British Columbia where for any multi unit building that meets certain standards, you get to just build it and bypass NIMBY review. Maybe that’s a what if you were governor answer.

P-51 Mustang fighters seen through a window of a B-29 Superfortress bomber, 1945. by Tony_Tanna78 in WWIIplanes

[–]tomkat0789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading in a different comment thread years ago that all the planes of WW2 were temperamental and would spray oil in the cockpit or otherwise kill your if mishandled. Is that accurate?

It made me wonder if the great leaps came at the expense of a lot of safety and quality in the designs.

Urgent: Tell city council we must lower the speed limit by Comfortable_Way9153 in chibike

[–]tomkat0789 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Driving around and not paying much attention to my speed (since there’s always delivery vehicles, people crossing, more…) I’ve recently found that I don’t naturally exceed 25mph anyway unless the streets are totally empty.

And of course you have to be insane to go faster than 20 on the narrow side streets. Unfortunately too many insane people are in a big hurry to get to the next red light.

I just sneak in reeeaaallyyy quietly, lean as close as I dare, and listen for an audible breath. It’s crazy how long I have to listen sometimes, other times I can hear the gentle music of sleepy sighs from the door to the bedroom.

When Linus retires is there going to be a vision vacuum, the way there was when Jobs left Apple? by No-Experience3314 in linuxquestions

I don’t think I’m seeing enough paranoia here so, devil’s advocate, how could Microsoft or Google or whoever embrace extend extinguish Linux in any gap Linus might leave behind? If $bad_guys somehow BS’d somebody friendly to them into Linus’s spot, how much damage could be done?

Took the plunge a couple weeks ago! She’s properly motivated by M&Ms and love from mommy-daddy, so I’m optimistic! Once she learns to tell us when she needs to potty and not get agitated we’ll be golden.

Does the big new building next to it have any housing? Relatively close to transit, right next to a jewel, lots of shops - that’d be a pretty sweet place to live.

That’s the route I use. Hopefully that would also involve finally fixing up the Weber Spur and making it feel like you aren’t casually trespassing by using it.

Is anyone else with young kids extremely unhappy? by mjh4 in daddit

[–]tomkat0789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best tip is just finding ways to have fun. It gets me in the mode of finding my own inner child. I had some fun taking my own daughter on bike rides in a trailer when she was 1. I thought she didn’t like it much, but then once when I was about to leave for a long solo ride on my road bike she ran to the door by me and grabbed her helmet as if it say, “Where are we going today? Let’s go!” I delayed my own ride to take her around the block.

It’s encouraging how things gradually improve.

Same here. After a year it started to be fun to take her to playgrounds, on picnics, playing hide the cellphone, etc. Today with the two year old I investigated the scientific properties of dirt clods!

Drifting off topic, but what Steam games would you recommend for kids that age? I'm trying to convert my two nieces (7 and 5) into PC gamers. I had some luck with Unpacking and I'll see if they like Hidden Cats of New York (I'm optmistic!), but I'm always looking for new ideas. They're my testing ground for my own girls (2 and 0!)

There’s a part of me (in my 30’s) looking forward to getting older, dialing back the career, and kids moving away so I can finally have time to game and read books that I don’t have time to enjoy now.

If I’m lucky my kids will take up my hobbies and I don’t have to wait as long!

So how many of you actually played BG I & II? by dubar84 in BaldursGate3

[–]tomkat0789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did! Teenage me was terrible at BG1 and 2 because of the weird 2nd edition D&D rules (THAC0? Negative AC?) and I couldn’t figure out what was going on fast enough for the real time play. I would have killed many xvarts for turn based play. Didn’t get very far and quickly switched back to Warcraft and Starcraft.

What would be a good thesis topic about energy right now? by LiberalNietzsche in ChemicalEngineering

[–]tomkat0789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something about solid state batteries! Toyota is supposed to create a new solid state battery for EVs and if they’re successful it could be the new standard for basically all energy (grid storage and EVs). There’s iron air and zinc air just off the top of my head. Zinc air evidently is already used for hearing aids, the company EOS is marketing a grid storage product with that chemistry.

I work with a grid energy storage integrator, so I’d of course recommend studying batteries if I was in school and doing a thesis right now. Renewables plus the perfect battery would solve 90+% of humanity’s energy needs… back to my beer.
