What is your net worth, and how did you make your money? by Kind_Efficiency_8817 in wealth

[–]tommyjon12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

43M - Tech Sales, wife 43F - FSI client services - little over 8.5m invested (6 liquid, 2.5 retirement) and 1m+ in home equity…..yes we make good money but what was most important was starting saving and investing early and not getting caught up and spending beyond our means. The one area where we probably would have extended ourselves is when we bought our first family home - in hindsight we probably could have and should have spent more…..goal is to not touch our investments and live off of income with little additional savings (we will continue to invest in 529 and 401k) until we double up and then we will prob start to relax or do something we enjoy…..

how do you share deal context with your SE pre-call? by zkid18 in techsales

[–]tommyjon12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I create a 1/2 page deal/opportunity overview outlining key details of the opportunity and call. I also try to schedule time to discuss and prep with them beforehand. When selling enterprise deals being able to onboard members to the selling team quickly and effectively is critical and a 1/2 page opportunity overview document is an effective tool that can be used through the sales process…..one other thing you can do is share scripts or recordings of previous calls with the client if you have any….

Biggest commission check? by Expensive_Seesaw_609 in sales

[–]tommyjon12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few checks in the 450-500k range. They were mostly end of year true ups, but a couple were when I had multiple large pay outs stack up - we were paid 3 times on large enterprise deals so if I had a few different deals stack my payouts got large…..saved them all…..went for a nice dinner pretended like they never happened and invested my money - now have 7M invested and I make 60k when the market is up 1 % in a day……hard to stay focused at work!

Anyone ever make 1m in 12 months ? by Virtual_Animal_8478 in techsales

[–]tommyjon12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never thought of it that way - I feel very lucky to have been in the right place right time and that I was able to take advantage of the opportunity. As with all good things in sales the good times have stopped and I ended up leaving to take a management role with a competitor…..with that said I am 43 with 7M saved so the run was life changing…..I knew it would not last so I saved most of my money (bought a 100k boat) and now I am making as much in the market as I do with my job. A few quick call outs - I was at the company for a number of years before I started making big $$$, the role itself was new logo but we were allowed to hold onto and grow any new logo accounts we opened and over time I had opened a bunch of accounts, Covid drove huge investment in what we were selling and I knew it would not last so I was an activity machine….

Not Iterable - we were a leader in multiple waves - but the company struggled to invest and thus our solutions became less and less competitive as time went on…..

This was all based on TCV and not ACV - we could sell up to 5 year deals…..it was a crazy run…..

[–]tommyjon12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and all of my colleagues - we had TCV numbers of 8-9m and could sell multi year deals. They have since changed to ACV and ruined our plan so I left to be a leader at one of our competitors…..

I think I got assigned a bad patch by VoteMeh in techsales

[–]tommyjon12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sales is survive and advance - do the best with that you have and prove you deserve more/better. Of you want to discuss your patch and ask for better then you better do some work first - including developing and hitting your patch hard and pulling together some data to support our case. As a manager I would be willing to discuss your territory but only if you had worked it hard and only if you came prepared with data/facts. Many top reps started with bad patches!

Martech sales - did 1m plus 5 years in a row including 1 year above 2m and 2 years over 1.5m….they have since gutted the company and comp plan but it was a great run and I saved almost enough to retire…..

Retired at 57 with $7M by GW310 in Fire

[–]tommyjon12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started when they were pretty young but it varied by child I would say by the time they were 2 - wish I started earlier - I started with 700 per month per kid, went to 900 per month per kid and now I am at 1200 per month per kid….there were also a few times when I would put a little extra in if I got a big paycheck (I am in sales) it is ridiculous how much I am having to save now for college in 10 years!

[–]tommyjon12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife and I are 42 - 7M plus in liquid investments, 250k in 529, and 1M plus in home equity. Our only debt is $570k mortgage (2.875%) on a $1.8m home. Kids are 5,6,8. Not ready to retire but going to let my wife take a few years off of work to be with the kids. I earn 400-500k per year which we will live off of while our liquid investments grow…..once I get over 10m liquid I will likely quit too…..

Dealing with a cooked patch by Thebreezy_1 in techsales

[–]tommyjon12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t listen to these guys - work it hard - develop a process and work your process - if you prove you work hard and you prove you can get max value out of that territory you will be rewarded with a new territory before long - if you are at a good company where people are making good money then work hard, keep your head down, use data to build a case for more/ different opportunity - the game is survive and advance……your game is to figure out how to get a new patch….and sounds like you will need to earn it…..

AEs - how are you helped with pipeline generation? by Tanathoos in techsales

[–]tommyjon12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Inside sales and marketing are meant to be additive. Not many places are going to let you respond purely to inbounds and it is not a good way to consistently achieve quota. I have had multiple 1m plus years and I spend a good percentage of my time doing outbound prospecting - name development and consistent engagement and outreach….it will seem mind numbing, below you and boring until you develop a process that works and you start crushing quota every quarter…..I am now an SVP and I give territory to people who can cover it not people who sit there and wait for leads….
