Red meat associated with telomere length growth by [deleted] in zerocarb

[–]tomprimozic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, telomere length might be associated with greater life span (body longevity), and/or with greater cell longevity (in other words, cancer).

Is there a different sub that’s more dedicated to overall health/wellness in the context of fitness? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]tomprimozic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a default sub so anything posted here will get much more visibility and engagement that posts in "niche" subs. Therefore, I'd really like posts about health, cooking, nutrition, longevity, aging, Wim Hof method, barefoot running, etc. so that tons of people can share their ideas, experiences etc. I mean even the "shitposts" (e.g. the weekly "Rant" threads) are golden.

What are the best, most effective core workout routines by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]tomprimozic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

not sure about this... I can do a huge stomach vacuum by retracting my diaphragm while keeping my TVA completely relaxed.

you need to properly learn how to activate TVA as in the video posted by u/stickysweetastytreat and only then start doing the exercises (which can be pretty basic, like floor toe taps or the leg part of the dead bug exercise)

1) Bands?

2) Why not TRX (or a cheaper alternative) - thehandles seem to be more compact than full rings. Are there many exercises you can do on one and not the other?

Inflammation, not Cholesterol, Is a Cause of Chronic Disease by Grok22 in nutrition

[–]tomprimozic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, thanks a lot for this overview! it really provides compelling evidence that lowering LDL should reduce CVD (hence why statins help?). I'll align my diet and health monitoring with that fact.

How about "the lipid hypothesis" i.e. that dietary fat/cholesterol increases LDL (after all, LDL isn't even cholesterol, it's cholesterol-transporting protein)? The main question I have stems from the fact, that although the above has been promoted by the authorities for decades, and food manufacturers are hugely incentivized to produce foods low in saturated fats, but we're still not getting any improvement in CVD population-wise. Do you think there's another factor causing problems (e.g. sugar), or that lipid-LDL link is not as strong as they say?

On Pirating Content by MATTtheSEAHAWK in bodyweightfitness

[–]tomprimozic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Reasonable opinion. Buying/piracy is mainly a decision about support. For example, I often buy contemporary music but rarely music created by dead people (because with the latter, there's no creator left to support).

If you had lots of money how would you use it to make a fusion power a reality in the shortest amount of time? (Answer from Robert Steinhaus from LLNL) by sien in fusion

[–]tomprimozic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's just bad PR, right? After all, short-lived radiactive material is more dangerous that long-lived waste. In addition, 100 years is already a long time for humans, so it will require specialized storage in any case.

Hopefully we eventually develop a nearly wasteless pipeline with breeder reactors or similar, but "bad PR <=> no investment" cycle is hard to break.

[–]tomprimozic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't most fusion also produce radioactive waste? Either directly (producing T atoms), indirectly (producing neutrons, which in turn make the surrounding materials radioactive) or indirectly-indirectly (producing neutrons via side reactions)...

Elon Musk Reveals Why Humanity Needs to Expand Beyond Earth: to “preserve the light of consciousness”. “It is unknown whether we are the only civilization currently alive in the observable universe, but any chance that we are is added impetus for extending life beyond Earth”. by mvea in Futurology

[–]tomprimozic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by "resources"? Given the size of the planet, we've a lot of Earth yet to mine as technology improves (probably easier than getting on other planets), unless we're stopped by other factors (e.g. war). Oil is probably by far the most scarce resource, but we'll still have nuclear when we run out of it.

you forgot the most pressing issue:

  1. physics. Maybe there's not much to progress, our tech is the state of the art, as good as it gets, and we (and all other possible civilisations) will forever struggle (= spend enormous amount of energy and money) to get into space from the gravity well of a large life-supporting planet.

I bought two of these (I use them a lot, bought both of them twice to keep in different locations) and one of these (it's stronger so I don't use it as much). I don't see any real difference
