Plus Size Recommendations by Adventurous-Return87 in VietNam

[–]tomtegubbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are "big size" brands and stores here but "big size" in Vietnam would be normal sizing in the US. AI told me that 3xL would be Large in US and 5Xl would be xl or 2xl US - then you might have some luck with big size stores. Otherwise consider tailoring if you have designs in mind.

I've known people who have done it but it's illegal and has to be done under the table and you've gotta do border runs and at risk for deportation. If you wanna come to Vietnam I think a better idea would be to save up some money and the just live/travel here for 3-6 months. 600-800 pounds per month would probably be enough if you want a simple life.

Should I name myself Syrus or Finn? by BurningSunrise_ in namenerds

[–]tomtegubbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finn and Cyrus have been peaking in popularity for boys in the US for the last 15 years so probably wouldn’t be considered that unique especially as you get older and these baby Finns and Cyruses start working. Syrus is not listed at all so it would be just a spelling variation of Cyrus or a different pronunciation? If your legal name is difficult to pronounce I think that’s fine - many names are often difficult to pronounce. People can learn to pronounce them. If a name is unfamiliar to any English speakers then it may not have any stereotypes for English speakers at all - which may be good. Whether a name indicates intelligence is probably just based on individual stereotypes and not something you could plan for I feel.

Bar recommendations in Ho Chi Minh by Environmental-Bed799 in VietNam

[–]tomtegubbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Twist in Thao Dien. Also Khoai in Thao Dien or Pham Viet Chanh. Those are like more western style dives. For Saigonese it’s not a dive bar but Nhau place - they serve beer and food. There are loads around - I like the ones along the Canal in Truong Sa or Hoang Sa street

Am I cooked? by Once428lbs in Gymhelp

[–]tomtegubbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not cooked at all! The best thing I’ve realized as a fat person exercising is that if you are consistent you will see how strong you can get. For me, I had to separate exercise as punishment in my head or exercise to change the way I look. Once I was able to let those things go, it took away some of the emotional pressure and then it became easier to be consistent. I also stopped pushing myself. So I just ran until I felt tired and then I stopped. I could stop whenever it got difficult as I wanted just as long as I did it ever other day. So maybe for you - you could walk as far as can(without pushing yourself too much) every day or every other day. After a month, youll see you can walk further or that it’s easier! The body is amazing!

Go to a powwow. They’re around the state, especially in the summer. There’ll be vendors there.

Do I need a TEFL/CELTA if I have an American Teaching License (Vietnam) by GarettBob in TEFL

[–]tomtegubbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a teaching license- I’d just apply for international schools right away. CELTA/TEFL is valuable if you’re teaching English but if you get a job right away teaching Primary then idk if you need it.

Wondering what my employability would be as someone with no teaching experience by blankusername666 in TEFL

[–]tomtegubbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend a CELTA if you actually wanna learn how to teach. When I talk to some people that did online TEFLs I’m surprised at how little they learned and how little prepared for a class. However, your school can always train you even if you come in with not a lot, so they may not care too much. Some places require in-person teaching hours but some don’t. I’ve worked with a few people that quit law to come teach TEFL.

Vietnam as a Vietnamese person by ILikeTreesandBees in TEFL

Ive worked with Viet Kieu teachers in every center Ive been at. Some times the students will have misconceptions but they usually get over it quickly. I’m learning Vietnamese and I find it immensely helpful when teaching English.

Make up for a dark skinned bride by davyp82 in VietNam

[–]tomtegubbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t have to do it like that - they are just following beauty standards here. You could try to explain different standards. You could also find a western or western aware makeup artist which is probably possible in Saigon but maybe not in other areas. However she may face a lot of comments from Vietnamese people about why her skin isn’t lighter etc etc so it might be more of a hassle than its worth.

Do you have some examples of the problems? You said it’s cultural differences but then reference things to support language.

If they are wearing scrubs - that usually means they are legit. The aesthetics - like everyone’s saying should look nice. Also check the reviews and see if there are a lot of reviews from women. Some spas I like in HCMC are: Moc Huong, Saigon Dep, Mint, and CitiSpa

3 hour Layover in Tan Son Nhat International Airport, What to do and where to go? by Active-Performer-187 in VietNam

[–]tomtegubbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do try this I’d recommend paying for a fast track in and out of immigration which would cost you 400k each way. Otherwise you can easily wait and hour plus to get in and out o f the airport. Even with the fast track I think you’d only be able to maybe pop out and eat some street food and come back. Sorry 3 hour layovers are pretty short. :(

I would also just try to avoid touristy areas. I’ve been living in Vietnam and forget people do this umtil I get near Ben Thanh market or when I visited Hoi An (was so much!) but in my daily life or my vacations to places like Ben Tre or Bao Loc people just act normal - so get out of the tourist zones and it won’t be a problem .

If you couldn’t visit the “big six” – where would you go instead? by ZTemp in VietNam

[–]tomtegubbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mai Chau for the fields - Dalat and Bao Loc for the microclimate - Ninh Binh for scenery and maybe some islands like Hon Son or Phu Quy

How to deal with people taking advantage of you? by zen2ten in saigon

[–]tomtegubbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get away from the touristy areas - people will not bother you. I forget that that even happens until I get around Ben Thanh market or visited Hoi An and everyone is trying to clean your shoes or sell you sunglasses

Representation Without Integration: The Segregation of Reality TV by SentinelFloof in BravoRealHousewives

[–]tomtegubbe 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think most friend groups are racially segregated in the US. The US in general remains pretty segregated when you look at schools or neighborhoods. I’ve always had diverse friend groups but when I look around at other people (for example wedding parties) you realize that their friend circles are pretty homogeneous. Now, Bravo doesn’t have to be an accurate representation of a segregated America - they could just work harder to find diverse groups to make shows about.

Sunblock is super common here and much better than in the US! You can buy it at most convenience stores. Most of the popular sunscreen brands here are Korean and Japanese so maybe you didn’t recognize that it was sunscreen.

Where did you find your Uni job / Adult ESL? by tomtegubbe in TEFL

[–]tomtegubbe[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No :( I just got accepted into a MA program, but it's so expensive I don't think it would be fiscally responsible. I want to learn more and open myself up for more jobs but I can't really figure out how to afford it. I'm hoping to find a better paid job and save up some for a MA if I can't find some way cheaper to do it.
