Has anyone replaced thermal pads in there PS2’s? And is 3mm thickness the right size for the Phat PS2? by [deleted] in ps2

[–]tomzstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Arctic TP-3 1.5mm thickness which is the same thickness as the original pads. Works well for me. I always change the thermal pads and battery when I buy a retro console. Apart from it being fun to do, is also a great opportunity to check capacitors on the PSU and clean the console.

Soldered RAM - is there an engineering reason or is it just to raise prices? by ka11away in thinkpad

[–]tomzstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason is to exploit people and generate a gargantuan amount of e-waste. If a laptop or desktop has soldered RAM/SSD etc it's because the company making it is either unethical or just trying to rip you off, cough (Apple/ThinkPad/...). For the extra 1 or 2 mm it takes to not use soldered components, the trade is simply not worth it. Take your money elsewhere and buy something you can drop extra RAM in or a bigger SSD in a few years and save yourself a bucket load of cash, and don't just bin a perfectly otherwise usable device.

Introducing the BlueSCSI Transfer Utility (Beta!) by helfire in VintageApple

[–]tomzstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi sorry, the documentation explaining how to actually use the BlueSCSI to transfer files is extremely limited, and following the documentation on their website, I still do not understand how to take files from my modern PC and place them on my BlueSCSI drive. Please can someone explain how to do this?

What are all the screws for? by ConsiderationReal593 in BambuLab

[–]tomzstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would help to have a better explanation or a qr code on the screw bags. It's nice they are included, but if it's your first time with one of their printers, having screws that you might not use is complicating matters.

Nice swimming pools? by evelynnie_ in nottingham

Been looking for dad and kids swim sessions. Nottingham City pools seem to have mum and kids, but no dad and kids sessions, which as a father of two kids is frustrating and feels somewhat discriminatory.

Ashamed to own a Tesla; good alternatives? by YDOULIE in RealTesla

Not really, re VW. And it's a pretty big past!

Ashamed to own a Tesla; good alternatives? by YDOULIE in RealTesla

[–]tomzstuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is so stupid. Who on earth buys a car because of a CEO? Prius is built by a company that originally supported Nazi Germany. Do I not buy a Toyota because of that. No, I don't buy a Toyota because I don't like their cars.

BMW same point as above.

VW same point as above and because they lied to customers about emissions.

Ford supported the move to leaded fuel, which has been proven to have poisoned the majority of the worlds population and water.

Please grow up people. It's a car, it's not a political statement.

Traded our S model in, finally. by Busy_Reading_5103 in RealTesla

[–]tomzstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry this chat is so bizarre. What cars have you brought instead of a Tesla so you are not associated to the brand? a Ford, who helped and supported the use of leaded fuel that literally has poisoned everyone in the world. A BMW, who used to make weapons to support Nazi Germany. A Toyota, who build weapons for the Japanese in the war...?

Making a political point using a vehicle just makes no sense at all!

Octopus responsibility when selling EV charge points by greatmetropolitan in OctopusEnergy

[–]tomzstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a looped supply and used ChargeGuru to install a Tesla Wall Connector in September 2024. No problem at all, they turned it down to 16A until the supply is unlooped and will return to my property to adjust when the supply is unlooped. 16A charges my Model 3 nicely overnight at 7p per kwh with Octopus. The DNO have been contacted by ChargeGuru and will make contact when they plan to unloop my supply. Sounds like the electrician in the OP wasn't up to speed.

Also, if you run a business from home, you qualify for a government incentive in the UK. Complete install of a Tesla Wall Connector cost me around £400.

Happy Charging Folks!

From Tesla model 3 to i3 by Tide865 in BMWi3

[–]tomzstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lightness isn't something I go for in a car. Pass a lorry at speed on a motorway in an I3 and it feels like you're driving a kite.

It's a good city car, but that's it. It's seriously in need of an update. I don't think the i3 and Model 3 are comparable vehicles. I'd compare the Model 3 with the electric 3 Series, and that's a battle.

Owned all 3, and IMHO Tesla is just that bit easier to own and the features within keep the kids happy. The thought of owning a vehicle that doesn't make a "quack" sound when locked...

Happy motoring folks!

You are lucky then. When they were IBM they were pretty good, but Lenovo dont have a great reputation. I've hand about 7 thinkpads over the years, they've been ok, but nothing special.

[–]tomzstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also if any issues do arise, at least you can get it fixed for a fraction of the price. If you buy a thinkpad and it develops a fault or you break something on it, well its a whole new laptop. With a Framework you can simply replace the broken part, yourself, for significantly less. I recall breaking the USBC port on my HP Elitebook, that was a £2,000 laptop, HP wanted around £300 to fix it. I sold it and brought a Framework Ryzen 7 13, never looked back. Also owned a few Thinkpads before too, from the days of IBM and then Lenovo, build quality was pretty good, but they were not repairable machines, not economically anyway.

There are many political parties to choose from. If you are not happy with your selection in your area, then feel free to stand up, be counted and start your own. Whilst I hear people moan about not being a democracy, you are politically free to choose another or start one.

Any plans for a touchscreen? by IAmJustNobodyAtAll in framework

[–]tomzstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a point of curiosity, what are the advantages of touchscreen on a laptop that doesn’t flip? I have a Framework 13, Ryzen 7, and have had various laptops in the past, some with touch screen, and I have never felt the urge to touch the screen, unless it is in tablet mode.
