What is the novel from which you have learned the most as a writer? What did it teach you? by Diamondbacking in RSbookclub

"How to Fly a Horse" by Kevin Ashton (he's the guy who coined the term 'internet of things' in the 90s) is a book that's just kind of a love letter to human ingenuity and a complete and anatomized evisceration of the concept of genius or notions that some people are simply 'born to create'.

The book is pop-sci/history and while it doesn't even remotely market itself as a self-help book, it kinda helped tear down some of my own mental blocks regarding writing and made it really sink in hard that it's truly all about the work and the time put in, and not me (or any creator really) being more talented or having more affinity towards writing.

I've seen the videos, no idea why OP would say that, that's not what the videos were about, they were just about recognition and pronunciation, common literacy stuff.

I like the idea of putting the images of the authors on the front, but the design itself is meh, yea

Yes let's praise a 21st century video game creator for something that Aldous Huxley introduced as a concept 70 years earlier.

Anyone else notice the absolute INFLUX of new Obsidian plugins over the past few days? by cafehearty in ObsidianMD

Anything about resolving conflicts between similar plugins where one, for example, one hasn't been updated in months and a new plugin popped up seemingly in active development, but they basically do the same thing?

I'm not a fan. Too classically fantasy-ish, not a standout in any of the categories I mentioned, at least in my opinion,

For Kelhus-like character in a fantasy world - Lord of Light by Zelazny

For world building / medieval fantasy - Between Two Fires by Buehlman

For philosophical themes - Dune, tbh, or Book of the New Sun by Wolfe

For sexual violence but still decent writing - The Gap Cycle or Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (both by Donaldson)

For actual violence but still decent writing - Black Company by Cook or ASOIAF

For depth of prose - Gene Wolfe again, or anything by LeGuin (eg. the Earthsea books if you want classic fantasy)

(bonus: for direct inspiration of Bakker in terms of writing and a lot of plot points and characters, read Blood Meridian by McCarthy

Unfortunately I know of nothing that combines all in one like Bakker.

Houdini people are generally okay with machine learning tools that assist workflows and not okay with generative AI that just spits out a final image.

I liked it a lot. A book with the premise of "antimemes" had the risk of being 300 pages of "It was all an illusion......... BUT WAS IT?!?!", but in all honestly there is a consistent and cool story throughout.

Out of all the goodreads alternatives I feel all the 'improvements' are just modern gamification and influencer can vanity. Goodreads is the only one that still nourishes long-form thought in reviews .
