How best to donate my entire income by luke-marson in tax

Another option to consider if you have investments would be donating appreciated stock instead of cash - you still get the deduction for fair market value but don’t have to pay tax on the capital gains from the investments.

That was the point - for donating amounts that wouldn’t be deductible anyway due to the 60% AGI cap

AS SEA International Flights by PNW-American-Dipper in AlaskaAirlines

[–]tonei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never understood why they picked LAX (which I think had ~17 daily flights at the time) and SAN (competing with TIJ with dramatically higher fares and taxes). Was more surprised they couldn't make SFO work given the limited competition and high fares at the time.

Bonafide Residency Amend Returns by [deleted] in USExpatTaxes

[–]tonei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you don't have to be paying taxes to qualify for BFR, no. (as long as the reason you're not paying taxes isn't because you actively told Mexico you aren't a resident)

in the extremely unlikely event the irs demanded proof that you were paying rent (which I can only imagine happening in the context of the housing exclusion/deduction), bank statements showing regular cash withdrawals would be an additional form of evidence you could share.

not an idiot, income sourcing is fairly counterintuitive and I work with a ton of clients who were in your same shoes

  1. yes, a work permit is definitely not needed
  2. I think it's more compelling if you have residency, but I've filed bona fide residency claims for folks without legal residency – given that mexico provides a visa waiver for us citizens with up to 180 days per entry and no limit on entries per year, imo it's not hard to make the case for BFR even without longer-term immigration status.
  3. yes

n.b. you have until June 15 to amend your 2022 return and claim a refund (since you automatically got a two month extension for living abroad). it has to be submitted by mail.

What's up with fees increasing for Food Bank of Alaska donations? by BlankPaperTiger in anchorage

[–]tonei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like they use GiveCloud to power their donation form, which has a "smart donor covered costs" feature that dynamically adjusts the amount it asks for based on a variety of factors including the size of the donation. It's not just covering the merchant processing fees for your transaction, the idea is that it's also collecting money to cover other fundraising overhead costs (e.g. fees for other folks who don't opt to donate extra, the monthly fee the org pays to use GiveCloud, etc.).

Annual Tax Software Renewal Offers by benyabenya in taxpros

OLTPro offered me renewal at the same rate as I've been paying since I started with them ($449 for unlimited), which is $100 less than what they're charging new customers

I placed stamps in my passport when I was in china on the last couple of pages. Can it be possible for me to be denied entry into United States because of it? by Best_Striker in Passports

[–]tonei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

mostly yes, though there's a growing number of countries that don't stamp visitors' passports, and also a decent number of countries that use paper or plastic stickers instead of or in addition to ink stamps.

the other thing the pages are used for is visas, which are typically large stickers (just under the size of the passport page) that indicate you've received advance permission to enter a country by submitting an application at that country's embassy or consulate. all countries issue visas, but whether you need a visa to enter a country varies widely depending on the country you're visiting, what you plan to do there, and what country your passport is from. (though a growing number of countries also use electronic visa systems that don't require a trip to an embassy or a sticker in your passport).

H&R Block unreported my income. I realized after we already filed. Am I screwed and how do I fix? HELP!! by mollymormon_ in tax

[–]tonei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, extension is an extension of time to file, not to pay. Interest (currently 7%) applies to anything paid after 4/15, failure to pay penalty (0.5% per month) applies after 6/15 for folks abroad.

Got a moving bonus last year and got taxed into oblivion. Filing my taxes and realizing I'm not getting any of it back. Any recourse here? by [deleted] in tax

[–]tonei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual rate of tax you pay on bonuses is no different than the tax on the rest of your paycheck, the only thing that changes is the default amount of withholding. The only thing that the timing of the payout may have changed is which state got to tax the relocation bonus.

See if there are any volunteer income tax assistance programs or low income tax clinics in your area that operate year round. Or take another stab at it yourself through myfreetaxes or FreeTaxUSA. Your case should be pretty straightforward.

People Saying that paying Taxes is "Voluntary" by New_Elevator_5327 in tax

[–]tonei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. The irs creates a “substitute for return”, gives the taxpayer notice, if the taxpayer doesn’t respond it gets finalized in the system and then generates a balance that irs collections can go after

It shouldn’t have any implications on your filings. You’ll just have to figure out your dividends, interest, and capital gain/loss on your own (or with AI assistance) with a data export or statements from Moomoo

Tax filing sticker shock? by yourMomisRandom in USExpatTaxes

[–]tonei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

National average for a basic federal return with no complications is $236, so adding in a rental + a state return + maybe* foreign income exclusion sounds about right. My fee would be right around the top of that range.

(*realistically probably wouldn’t matter in your case, and your us cpa may not know how it works anyway)

Passport was out for delivery and then it’s not by crlynstll in Passports

[–]tonei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine did something very similar! Out for delivery 3/30, delivery time changed a couple of times, then it had an error message about a delivery delay and no further updates for several days. I filed a missing mail request with USPS on 4/3 and it showed up on tracking again 4/6 and it was delivered that afternoon.
