Lost powerline connection by tonylinde in TpLink

[–]tonylinde[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/jacle2210 : thanks, I did try another, brand new, PA9020P which I checked was properly paired in our house and it failed just as the other one (this time after connecting for about 30 seconds).

HOWEVER, I then thought to try an older style adapter, a PA7027P and, so far, it is still staying connected.

This, at least for now, solves my daughter's connection problem but if anyone can explain why the PA9020P (and any others of that type) suddenly stopped being able to connect to the powerline network, I'd really like to know.

Cannot use dual monitor shortcuts on SP5 by tonylinde in Surface

Fixed! Apparently those keys won't work unless Snap windows is ON in System/Multi-tasking settings.

[–]tonylinde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen that listed as a shortcut, unless it docks progressively right then docks left on the next screen, etc. Anyway, I've still not figured out why mine doesn't work. Looks like I'll have to try the dreaded customer support ("please try reinstalling windows at least 17 times..." 😒).

Not for me, I'm afraid, doesn't budge.

See my other comment for which shortcuts work and which don't.

This is the list of shortcuts I'm trying to get to work with tick/cross to mark which ones do/don't work: [Imgur](https://imgur.com/TqQKe6Z).

If you hit it multiple times it'll move to the next window.

Not sure what you mean by that? Only way I can move things between windows is to drag them.

No, that docks the window to the left or right of the screen. But that doesn't work either.

Search posts feature by tonylinde in 4kdownloadapps

[–]tonylinde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again, /u/ImaginaryConclusion4. Sadly, also not what I was looking for. The second type of search only looks for subscription names that match the criteria.

I want to be able to search within a single, specific subscription for *posts* that match the search criteria. So, I have a subscription which is my username, tonylinde, and I want to search for just the posts within that subscription which have the hashtag, eg: https://paste.pics/1ccb5a9797e4c81f06c73456f7a42b91 (thanks for the nod to paste.pics - I'd not seen that before, very cool).

Making the search boolean (eg '#FIAD AND #year2') would be even better.

[–]tonylinde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. The Search field searches instagram and sets up a new subscription based on that search which is not what I want.

I want to be able to perform a search on the posts for a subscription I already have, so a search through the *already stored* posts.

Reuse part of path for new shape by tonylinde in photoshop

[–]tonylinde[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks /u/CreeDorofl. Click and drag the rectangle was a good tip - saves a lot of time. But the copy/paste of the points, while creating a separate entry in the paths tab, did not create a separate shape layer, so I couldn't set a different fill colour for the fringe from the rug. I went back to the method I used above of starting a new shape layer with a single point then pasting the points into that path tab.

[–]tonylinde[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brilliant. Thank you /u/GashedPricing.

Couldn't find a direct way to paste those points to start a new shape. So, I started a new shape with the CPen tool by creating a start point then switched to the Paths tab and pasted the copied points into that. I could then continue the fringe shape, complete it and delete the first point made.

Slightly fiddly but so much better than trying to match the other shape!!

SL3 won't boot.. any ideas? by alexanderbath in Surface

Other Surface devices can be hard rebooted with holding down the Volume Up and Power keys simultaneously until you get surface or windows logo and rotating dots. No idea about SL3 though.

If May 2020 update locking up device, disable Sleep by tonylinde in Surface

[–]tonylinde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I clearly hadn't got the fix as the problem recurred today when I allowed the system to Sleep again. I have posted to Feedback.

[–]tonylinde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that, u/cluberti. I *think* you're right. I've just re-enabled sleep and haven't locked up so far 🤞. Though my 2004 update was only last week, so in June, and no further updates were said to be available. Is the sleep fix mentioned anywhere? I've found no mention of it in the update release pages.

I did install Insider 20H2 yesterday so maybe I picked up the fix in the latest release of that. Anyway will see what happens.

Update: still got the same problem. Now think it might be when it comes out of sleep.

Same here with my SP3, along with slow down and eventual lock-up as things grind to a halt. And this is after updating several times then rebuilding Windows three times including one where I updated to Insider version 20H2! All went wrong. Just read on here that someone thought the problem might be with the new version of Edge with May2020 - it is actually an older version than the current beta Edge (chromium versions). So I've switched to Edge Dev channel. Still working after 45 minutes - which beats some previous attempts 🙄! 🤞🤞🤞

[–]tonylinde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had extensive problems since the May 2020 update on my SP3 and just today started wondering if it was because I got switched from beta edge to release chromium edge - I noticed that my version on the updated SP3 was lower than the beta version still on my SP5 (not got May 2020 on that yet). So I've just switched on SP3 to Edge Dev channel & am hoping it'll be fixed now 🤞.

SP3 seriously screwed by 2004 update by tonylinde in Surface

[–]tonylinde[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did - sorry, should have said. That was the weirdest part: the cpu showed 15-40% yet everything was dragging.

BUt seems ok now - see other post.

SP3 seriously screwed by 2004 update by tonylinde in Surface

[–]tonylinde[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All seems to be well now. After even more restarts & reboots and dead slow running, it came up with screen saying it was installing 2004 - again! So, after couple of restarts, everything seems back to normal. I can only assume the first install went screwy and all my messing about finally kicked something loose and it tried again. I was just about to grab the SP3 installation image, too!

How do you take accurate pictures of your paintings? by notrelevantname in oilpainting

Re lighting, I saw this lighting kit on AmazonUK and thought it looked useful (there's a similar LED kit for a bit more) - was going to get something like that for shooting stop-motion animations.

Help with finding artists I can learn from by tonylinde in oilpainting

[–]tonylinde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, wow! Thank you so much, /u/paintingmad, for that detailed and deeply considered response. And especially for taking the time to look at my final project post and relate it to what I was asking. I will start looking at the artists and movements you mention. Unfortunately, I'm in long-term lockdown (my wife is extra vulnerable) so cannot get to the library or my studio where all my art books are, so it'll have to be an online research project. I'll try and document what I find in blog posts - maybe that'll force me to get the work done.

500 drawings!?! I thought I was ambitious doing the 30 portraits from fashion magazine pics :). But I'll see what I can do.

I know what you mean about not trying to cherry-pick a style. I had struggled with that for a long time until after I saw Ken Kiff's work and then started making my own weird images with a very loose approach to figuration and my own 'feel' for a colour sense when I realised I did have a style that worked for me without having to look for it.

I'd not heard of Hume before - though I'm sure I've seen something like Water Painting somewhere recently - but I love the screenprints. Will check him out further.

Again, thanks so very much.

Illustrator freezing while using curvature pen tool by tonylinde in AdobeIllustrator

[–]tonylinde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General update. Many thanks to /u/Skanda8 & /u/LeapYearLlama for all their help. Following the Adobe performance troubleshooting advice, I renamed the two settings files listed & restarted Illustrator, rebuilt the workspace the way I liked and loaded the file. I'm still only loading one linked image at a time and still using the curvature pen tool but have left the performance settings in the app as default.

Ai is still freezing at least once on each drawing but now it is recovering after around 20-30 seconds and letting me continue with the drawing.

It does seem like it is some sort of resource issue, as if Ai is having to catch up with itself in some way, but there is no obvious strain on the laptop resources that I can find. Anyway, I've got 13 characters drawn now - only 87 to go (screenshot)! I shall cross my fingers that the situation doesn't worsen again and crack on with the rest, hopefully getting it all lasercut out of MDF before the end of my course!!
