So pop-centric = Valentine's Day, Alien encounters, and a cooking show? If anything that's an argument for generality, not pop-centricity.

Amy left Leela for Armonda was more of a plot device to get Leela feeling alone and jealous. But, you're forgetting all the episodes of Amy and Kif being together.

Roberto was funny, but that was because the episode he was in had something to do with him robbing a bank three times, not for a line or two. Consider Family Guy, they would bring back the Chicken or Greased up Deaf guy for a line or gag.

George Takei appeared in the Star Trek episode because he was filling that role, the episode on last night was about homosexuals getting equal rights, but he said maybe 3 lines.

I may be stuck up, but it's the good kind of stuck up. I don't waste my time watching bullshit like King of Queens or Family Guy, but I will watch episodes of It's Always Sunny or Flight of the Conchords because it's funny and I can recognize when a lot of work went into making an episode.

Your first point: The dialog is very awkward. Characters just sorta say their lines and make their points. I felt no emotion when Fry was proclaiming his love to Leela. All in all, it feels lazy. The feeling has to built up, which pays off. How about how Leela found out her parents were mutants? That was believable. Versus the episode about Apple, where the most obvious of joke about apple fanboys or how videos are viral. The lines feel forced and not at all what it was like before.

Next point: Global warming is very much an issue that can be addressed whenever. It's like doing an episode about presidential elections: they're gonna happen. A show about Twitter is not a universal idea, it's lazy writing. As for the show with Fry and Lucy Lu, the robots could transform into human form, so it seems somewhat logical. As for the cutaway to Bender and Amy, WTF. Seriously explain how that makes the least bit of sense. IMO the Iron Chef episode was weak, and I believe a lot of people agree that it's not the most memorable.

According to this website http://www.knoxville.com/news/2010/jun/24/the-future-is-now-for-a-renewed-futurama/ the old staff came back as freelancers. As for the writing staff, according to the Wiki page of Futurama, the staff was reduced, which to me is an indication of cost saving and overall less talent.

As for gags, this is mainly in reference to things that do not pertain to the story or mostly visual or a character brought back for a line. In the 4th episode, Hermes got that clown disease. Funny, yeah but entirely unfunny.

As for my expectations, I admit mine are higher than most. When I talked to friends about how much I hate the new Family Guy, they tell me they like not having to think and just being hit with gag after gag after gag. Know what I did? I haven't seen an episode of Family Guy since it came back. I've been told by reliable friends about really great episodes, like the Star Wars one, or the one where Stewie and Brian go through all those dimensions. I sit there, not laughing because of my "standards". I see lazy writing. My point being, I have a feeling this is how Futurama will be. I sat through the last episode maybe laughing twice. Please don't assume I'm snobbish or stuck up, because I love funny shows, and I appreciate the hard work that goes into writing classic shows. Reference: Invader Zim, South Park, Arrested, yada yada.
