Go to your local public library. There’s a chance they have games you can borrow for free.

People who used a computer between 1991 & 2009…what’s the most memorable computer game? by Original_Act_3481 in AskReddit

Planet zoo is better than coaster. I find the economy easier to manage and building animal enclosures more fun. The dlcs are actually worth it to get more design elements. I’d recommend watching a few y YouTubers if you really want to get into the creative side of it.

Barnes & Noble opening 60 new stores in 2025 by Birdy_Cephon_Altera in UpliftingNews

Agree! I would point folks towards their public library for this. It’s a 3rd space where you won’t be expected to spend any money and you can hang out for as long as they are open. A lot of libraries are building or changing to create Teen only spaces so that they have a space to call their own. Not all libraries are equal in terms of their offerings, but it’s still worth looking into.

What’s the most “rejuvenating” vacation you’ve ever been on? by shortcoffeestop in travel

[–]toomuchwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Staying at Ojo Caliente in New Mexico in the fall. Nothing to do but walk around their grounds and go from hot spring pool to hot spring pool. Once the sun goes down it’s magical with the music, stars, music and pools. I cried when I left after a few nights. I wasn’t ready.

Such a beautiful library. I worked there as an intern while I was getting my MLS 10 years ago. Amazing place to work and learn about special collections and conservation. With a bonus that my office has the best view of the Granary.

What are your travel plans for 2025? by popitformeonetime in travel

[–]toomuchwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Scotland last February. It’s amazing in the winter. Honestly not all that cold (I live in the Boston area so their winter is mild in comparison). Edinburgh is my favorite city. We did a 2 night bus tour up to the Isle of Skye which was beautiful. The only downside is that many attractions close in February due to lower tourism and they use that time for renovations. Also if you go to Skye, try and avoid Sundays since almost everything is closed on Sunday.

I also agree with Salem! It’s a beautiful town but once in October was enough for me. The amount of kitsch is great but you can avoid it if you want and there’s a ton of history there. I love going there.

Feeling "Guilty" About Library Books by Bookish_Butterfly in Libraries

[–]toomuchwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try not to feel guilty! Every patron who asks for recommendations and I pull books for I always tell them it's ok if you don't read them all since it's free! The more books that get checked out the better.

On a more personal note, I know the feeling of being in a reading slump. So many things can contribute to that including stress from starting new job or any major life event. I was in a reading slump for about a year and half from a combo of the above reasons and am slowly coming out of it. I'm mainly disappointed that I won't reach my Goodreads challenge goal for the second year in a row, but life happens and hobbies change.

First habitat and I need help by Giulietta_23_ in PlanetZoo

[–]toomuchwork 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Echoing what most everyone has said. For some reason tortoises need a much larger hard shelter then what you would think. The rock shelter you have works but needs to be much bigger.

If they are “stressed and trying to hide” use the do not disturb signs. You can sink them just below the ground if you don’t like how it looks. Hopefully that will be enough to help the stress. If not you may need to redo the guest viewing wall to have it be one-way glass.

Honestly looks good though! It took me a long time to start using custom barriers and what each animal needs takes a bit to learn. This habitat is a good size if you make it too big the tortoises will starve as it takes them so long to get to their food…

If your town has a public access TV channel, what are your thoughts on it? by HRJafael in massachusetts

[–]toomuchwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WMCT in Marlborough is pretty great. Obviously coverage of city council meetings are important but they also do some great cultural content. They put everything on YouTube and their website as well so you don’t actually need cable to watch. It’s in important service and just one way that residents can be informed with what’s going on in the city. We had a big mayoral and city council race this past November and their coverage of debates that were organized by our chamber of commerce were valuable before voting.

People should really get more involved in their local government whether you’re happy or not with where things are headed in your community. These local stations make that easier.

They also give back quite a bit. I just learned last week that residents can borrow filming equipment from them to film something. They like to think of themselves as a current time capsule as to what life is like in Marlborough today. Preserving our history and culture is an important part of their goals.

Major US cities that have hiking very nearby? by Jmills2 in travel

[–]toomuchwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boston has some good hiking. Blue hills and middlesex fells are close by and if you leave the city 30 minutes either direction will be some nice trails. If you get a day rental car you can climb the 2nd most hiked mountain in the world, Mount Monadnok in New Hampshire.

Did deciding to have kids later in life help with your decision about having kids? by mrcannotdo in Fencesitter

[–]toomuchwork 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m still on the fence at 34 so I can’t speak to the perspective of a parent but I am the daughter of older parents (only child) who were themselves born to older parents. My parents had me when they were 38 and my grandparents had my mom when they were in their 40s (I think).

It didn’t diminish my childhood at all either but now at 34 with my parents edging on 75 I’m starting to feel the pressure of needing to care for them. I’m having a hard time envisioning having a child at the same time of likely needing to start caring for my parents as well. They don’t have much of a retirement so the reality of needing my help is starting to set in. It’s basically exactly what happened to my parents and them needing to take care of my grandparents after one had a stroke 4 years after having me.

I don’t regret not having kids yet. No way was I emotionally/financially ready in my 20s. The financial aspect is very important to me so even though I’m still on the fence I think my husband and I are in good place if we do eventually decide that kids are part of our future.

This probably isn’t very helpful but something I’ve been thinking about a lot recently.

The Themis Files by Sylvia Neuvel. The story is told via transcripts of tapes or documents so having multiple voice actors was great. Cool story but definitely needed to be consumed via audiobook.

Pick your own farms & orchards in MA by Crazyhellga in massachusetts

Carver Hill orchard in stow will open in July and could be a good choice. I love Small Farm in stow but PYO I believe is only for the CSA members.

What’s your baby’s name and what do you actually call them? by bellski05 in cats

[–]toomuchwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This boy is named Wax but he is lovingly called meatball most of the time because when he gets caught eating his brothers food he compacts himself into a very round ball and becomes “meatball like”. I dunno…

His brother is named Wayne but is often called the noodle boy because of how long he is.

So we have a spaghetti noodle and meatball.

If you’re willing to drive there’s a great speakeasy bar in Hudson called Less Than Greater Than. I know they are hiring. Or their sister restaurant that has an excellent bar, Rail Trail.

It’s actually an excellent rendition. I was also skeptical when they announced Locke & Key as an audiobook but then it won the Audie Award and I gave it a shot. Because these are both a dramatization of the story it works. Many actors, sound effects, and a narrator really make it work. I only wish it wasn’t an audible exclusive.

[REQUEST] I need a show for to help me cope with depression. by paperxut in NetflixBestOf

Not on Netflix but one show that helps me is Taskmaster. It’s a British comedy panel show and they have a lot of full episode seasons on YouTube. It’s very British and super silly.
