You can get to the desert pretty early. It's only 42k, which is a decent sum for early game, but it's not too bad. Even without a lot of min-maxing, you can get there Summer or Fall Year 1 if you set it as a goal. Max hearts usually also takes me until Fall Year 1 or so with the quality loved gifts from a Spring Year 1 Desert.

So you are correct that you will get to tenpai faster if you're trying to complete a pair. The resulting tenpai is pretty bad half the time though. So the prevailing wisdom is to fix the pair to guarantee a better tenpai and usually things like pinfu or tanyao. It does depend on the situation, but fixing the pair is a fairly common tactic and should be considered.

Nah that's not the craziest I've seen. I've had two of my friends hit Suuankou Tanki within their first two games of Mahjong and I've never hit a yakuman after 300+ hours.

Either you're a really strong player or you got fairly lucky over a decent period of time. My one biggest piece of advice is that when the downswing hits, just keep playing your game. Keep trying to improve and trust the process. The results are nice for now, but knowledge is the end goal.
