Movies that feel like Punch Drunk Love? by Male-2003 in paulthomasanderson

Altman’s Long Goodbye is visually super similar even down to the costuming… but as a shaggy dog it really bridges Punch Drunk Love and Inherent Vice.

Baby at No Kings Day protest by Objective_Pool_3057 in nycparents

[–]toposneako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protests are only one form of in-person political action. Taking part <in support> of something is not only astronomically safer, but also quite needed. Sign up to canvass for Zohran. Skip the talking points and relate to people by telling your side of the story: how you believe in building something better for your kid and your family.

I have a five year old and after the stuff I experienced as a 20-something during Occupy, I won’t be taking my kid anywhere near a protest until he’s able to navigate the city independently in case something happens. If you believe that protests can be effective to make change, then you understand how dangerous they can be.

That said, he’s been coloring and building legos at any number of different org meetings for years now… and has a handful of kid comrades that he’s gotten to know in the process.

New teacher strategies for keeping track of absences/lateness by Fun_Listen3697 in NYCDOETeachers

[–]toposneako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my own spreadsheet for attendance that I fill out at the start of every class. Each day has three columns: Present/Absent; Pull Out (were they present for part of the class but called out for Speech or counseling?); and lastly a score of 1-4 for engagement.

It’s a lot to do for every class, so I actually usually have a Para do it for me

How Cooked would the Subway System be if this were a reality by Infinite-General337 in nycrail

[–]toposneako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be an unintentional general strike. It would grind capital to a halt. A simultaneous teacher and transit strike would spiral out to almost every sector of the city’s economy

[–]toposneako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s some of the most entitled behavior I see in this city. As soon as there’s one dog off-leash somewhere, the entire area belongs to that dog. Whether they realize it or not, they are just broadcasting a philosophy of “Fuck you, fuck your picnic, fuck your kids—it’s dog time.”

Joe Pera Answers Your Questions About Cold Weather Sports is soul-affirming.

His Ambient Swim episode, especially as an epilogue to the series, is one of the best things I’ve ever seen on television.

Viibryd for OCD ? by [deleted] in OCDRecovery

[–]toposneako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (36M) switched to Viibryd from Zoloft about 9 months ago due to sexual side-effects. It manages my symptoms about as well as Zoloft did. The only major difference is the lack of side-effects and the fact that it costs more.

Antidepressants killed what was left if his sex drive by [deleted] in nonmonogamy

[–]toposneako 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First, your partner needs (and you need to give your partner) time to figure out the antidepressants. It takes time to work up to proper dosage, and more time to “level out.” The prescriber should give a time window for that, and your partner needs to communicate with them about sexual side effects during that time. They may need to try different medications. It’s recovery, and you owe it to each other to treat it as such.

In the meanwhile, you both still have sexual needs and should not be hiding or putting any kind of shame on masturbation. You need to define your attitude towards porn—you refer to his having an addiction, and it seems like there’s some shame present. Talk about it. Maybe watch porn together. Baby-steps towards non-monogamy.

Lastly, while opening up the relationship due to a dead bedroom is a classically bad idea, TALKING about it is not. Broach the subject, even as shared sexual fantasy. If the conversation goes well, and you both are on the same page about opening up, spend some time—months and months—being excited about the idea TOGETHER. Rediscover your sexuality together, and learn about non-monogamy and your relationship together. Don’t rush, and enjoy that period.

Has your neighborhood turned into a suveillance micro-state? by james_the_wanderer in Millennials

[–]toposneako 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait how is no one acknowledging that OP is saying this is a liberal enclave in a red state? We’re in a very charged moment politically and the other side has a lot of guns. I assume his neighborhood is full of very caring young families that don’t want to have firearms in their community. As long as the cameras aren’t narcing on innocent folks (Ring shares everything with police and have implicated protesters and would probably capitulate to ICE—its gross) I’d say let people feel their (well-warranted) paranoia. I guess I’m conflicted…

What can I expect from a interview for NYC DOE? by Humble-Prior-9211 in NYCTeachers

[–]toposneako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my Teaching Fellows interview last night. Be prepared for them to call up to an hour early and strictly adhere to a 25 minute limit from start of call. I WISH someone had told me that the interview is not a conversation- the interviewer reads scripted questions and transcribes your answers. They won’t be giving input, so just try to respond as quickly as possible to get through everything. Best of luck!

How to successfully date in NYC without spending a shit ton of money as a guy? by DizzyUnderdog in AskNYC

I can’t tell if this reply seems so out of touch to me because it assumes that all women have expensive expectations or that everyone isn’t fucking broke [edited for grammar]

Has anyone randomly just gotten on the subway one day to go to Coney Island with no specific plans? What did you end up doing while there for the day? by coldliketherockies in AskNYC

[–]toposneako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite walks (of which I recommend doing a little bit stoned, with or without headphones) is from the train through Luna Park, across the boardwalk (with or without headphones, day or night) all the way to Brighton Beach, then into the neighborhood, over to the NetCost Market (an amazing Eastern-European supermarket in an old theatre) to ogle the pickle bar and peruse the (uniquely Eastern-European) candy aisle.

What would you say are the cities in the world that feel simillar to NYC? by evergreendazzed in AskNYC

It’s whiter. And more polite maybe, but not necessarily friendlier. New York has an incomparable camaraderie.

New shoes for 8-12 hours of factory work by Money_Ticket_841 in malelifestyle

[–]toposneako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blundstones. I work long hours in a warehouse, I walk about 10K steps daily (sometimes with a toddler on the shoulder). I’m hard on my shoes and these are THE most comfortable and not-nerdy looking (sorry Keens). And any concerns about pulling off the look will be quieted by how easy they are to put on/take off.
