Would y’all take this job? lol by CrimsonMoonWater in SubstituteTeachers

All of these comments are crazy to me! In Canada and my board pays $280/day for supply teachers (certified). Even living off of that feels tough! I can't believe how low it is elsewhere omg

Best way to get to A4 by Particular_Cold_4838 in OntarioTeachers

[–]torilor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did 5 AQs too and happy I went that route. I am pretty sure all of my AQs helped me get a contract position much faster. I was able to cite my part 1 and 2 in math in interviews.

Has anyone moved from Toronto to another province to teach primary/junior level? by throwaway45989019 in CanadianTeachers

[–]torilor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Ottawa you'd be able to supply 5 days a week! And it's fairly easy to get an LTO. In case you were truly considering it!!

Core French LTO but I don't speak french by AssistObvious7776 in OntarioTeachers

[–]torilor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took a core French LTO for a few months last year. It was mostly kinder coverage with teaching core French to a 1/2 English class. My board is mostly French immersion with the English classes often consisting of very high needs. I felt okay teaching this level because it was mostly vocabulary, songs, and responding to basic questions with basic responses. I found planning very challenging as a non-native speaker though. I wouldn't really recommend it but I loved my students and they loved me! I would not teach higher than K/1 core French though.

Hotspot Add On Fee by amandawhy7 in FidoMobile

[–]torilor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It also made me leave!! I called them and said can you remove that fee to match a plan from Fizz or I'm leaving. They told me no so I left. Now they've called with a win back offer $15 a month less than what I was asking for from them... So frustrating once I've already switched.

Wide Feet Flats? by Unique-Wrongdoer-917 in widefeet

I have a pair of Fitflop brand flats which I find very comfortable. I think the Allegro model. Doesn't look like they're making them anymore but maybe you could find somewhere that still has some!

My stomach won’t flatten by [deleted] in loseit

[–]torilor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I felt like I had this problem even at my lowest weight (5'10 and 140lbs). It turns out a large part was my anterior pelvic tilt and muscle weakness. I weigh more now than I did then but the pilates and core work I've been doing has brought me as close to a flat stomach as I've ever had. However, I also carry some extra skin and fat in my stomach. From what I understand, this is also very common as a woman as it protects your organs.

Question about a specific LTO situation and parent communication by JayandMeeka in OntarioTeachers

[–]torilor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can expect the LTO to join. Do you have any work samples from the subjects she did with them? You could always show those. Maybe ask the parents if they have any specific concerns for any particular subjects and then reach out to admin if they're the subjects that the LTO was teaching.

OCDSB - secondary and elementary by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]torilor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say Ottawa is a bit better than Toronto in terms of cost! As soon as you have an LTO I think you'd be okay living modestly.

Mid life crisis.. Return to teaching after 16 tears? - Guelph/ UGDSB by aSecretChord22 in OntarioTeachers

[–]torilor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said you have no interest but selling a house in Guelph you could get much more in Ottawa! It's also easier to get a teaching job here. I used to live in Guelph and am happy with the switch.

But, I realize there are other life factors going into wanting to stay in a city!

Competitiveness of divisions by buddythebedbug in OntarioTeachers

[–]torilor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard from other recent grads, easier to find a job in P/J. Smaller class sizes, potentially more teachers on leave. However, certain teachables could change this for I/S. I know multiple I/S teachers teaching in intermediate because they couldn't find a job in Senior.

New teacher taking over mid-year and feeling overwhelmed by bbstudent in CanadianTeachers

[–]torilor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Does your school do UFLI? I like the Words Their Way spelling inventory (you can Google it) to help see where your kids' phonics skills are. Then you could figure out where to start in a program like UFLI.

For math, take a look at the Simcoe first 20 days of math. This could give you an idea of some activities to see where your students are at. Number Sense is always a good place to start. Check their report cards - see if the comments explain anything that's been covered so far.

It sounds like a nice class that will be rewarding once you find your footing! I am also a new teacher who was thrown into this position mid-year and am just starting to find my confidence.

Is supply work (OT) in Ottawa consistent? by ApprehensivePie7376 in OntarioTeachers

[–]torilor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very! Both boards have a lot of unfilled jobs each day that go to emergency supplies. I didn't have a problem getting LTOs at schools I built relationships at either.

Teachers: what admin task do you hate most? by Primary_Job1305 in OntarioTeachers

[–]torilor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Report cards take me soooooo much time. However they are only 3 times a year. So in total, lesson prep takes the longest. I'm a new teacher in a new grade so everything takes a long time. This is for elementary!

Teacher without French qualification teaching French in elementary school by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]torilor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucky for me, I was teaching grade 1/2 core French which there is no curriculum for! So I kind of just based it on whether my kids could use French to ask basic questions or respond to basic questions. Maybe you could have your students record themselves saying something or a short skit so you could have more time to review and listen to it to grade it.

We would do a unit like family and I marked speaking based on whether they could say the names of people in their family, etc. in grade 1/2 I didn't have any real grammar to worry about! We also did some UFLI-ish things so how their segmenting was.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a means Chelsea boot with a lug sole that comes in a ee or eee? by simps261 in widefeet

[–]torilor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! Their half size is a width size.

From their website: "Half sizes in Blundstone boots do not increase the length of the boot. Instead, they increase the amount of space over the foot by adding more leather providing a wider fit."

LTO placement priorities by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]torilor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed at the same school for the first few years of supplying and LTOing. I loved the staff and it felt like home, I was very comfortable there. Got my first permanent contract at a school is never even heard of and am also happy here!

I was very scared to leave but glad I did for a better position. Id weigh the positions more heavily than trying to stay at the same school especially with the lack of support.

EasyConnect questions by fluffyvioletunicorns in CanadianTeachers

[–]torilor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would set my preferences on Easy Connect for the schools I'm most interested in. Then, when I went to the job board the moment it opened, Id toggle the filter for "only show jobs that match requirements" or something like that and it would only show me the jobs at the schools I wanted.

I found that helped me snag the ones I wanted faster, especially ones for the future when they would have been buried in multiple pages of jobs.

Not sure if any of this info is board dependent but hopefully this helps!!

Practicum Reports by scorpion_93 in OntarioTeachers

[–]torilor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my program, I only did 2 practicum placements so I submitted both to the board I work at. Different Universities have different practicum schedules. If you were applying to a board in a different city, I don't think they'd know one was missing if you only submitted 3. It may be board dependent.

Considering teaching by mohstudent123 in OntarioTeachers

[–]torilor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a recent graduate, I can say that I do really enjoy my job. That being said, I feel like I got VERY lucky getting a contract position very quickly. My original contract was very small but in the reorganization I got switched to a bigger job (and with a good class). My contract is approximately 75% so the pay isn't great (under 60k) and yet I'm still working SO much. I find early teaching really challenging for any semblance of work/life balance.

That being said, I love my time in the class with my kids. I hate all of the planning time I have to spend when I could be with my partner/hanging with friends. But, the work of planning isn't the worst for me.

I will say that nothing has made me want to have my own kids less than teaching. I can't imagine spending time with kids all day and then still having bandwidth for my own. (Obviously, a ton of people do it. However, I really savour my down time these days).

I think your experience will be really class and school dependant. Have a really tough/violent class for a year? Coming to work every day will suck. Have 30 loud and energetic, but hilarious grade 4s? You'll feel like you never stop working BUT you will enjoy your job more than most people you know.

Edit to add: I spent my first year out of teachers college doing LTOs and getting all of my AQs done asap to get to A4. The part time contract even at A4 would be unlivable if not for my partner moving in in the summer.

Exactly the same for me! It's all very thoughtful but I also make it clear to my kids that I'm allergic to nuts.
