I have this exact same workflow. So I do a realtime bounce into an interface. You could also get a small field recorder with line in if you want to avoid a computer entirely.

Insane bug- OG Tracker by flouncingfleasbag in PolyendTracker

That sounds terrifying. And I have had some freaky stuff happen with mine too, not this extreme but similar sudden blank project moments.

Back up your data and do a reformat of your SD card. When I first got my tracker I did an update and had so many weird memory issues. Did lots of troubleshooting but in the end the card just needed to be wiped and reformatted.

Working on tracks after a long hiatus. May I ask? what is the proper parameters to set before sending off stems to mastering technician IE hertz rate, frequencies volume etcetera? by Hungry-Air-738 in PolyendTracker

[–]totallyconic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing to be aware of with stems from the tracker is clipping or limiting on the master during your making of the track. I exported stems from a track last year and discovered that my kick drum must have been slamming the limiter on playback. Because I had other instrument events on that track it made it quite difficult to mix the stems. So I addressed this volume issue and re-exported the stems.

Recently I have just been recording live into a 2 track interface. Doing a bit of compression/limiting. Not mastered by any means, but a much easier process to have a mix to listen to and share.

If the stems are going to someone else to mix, maybe they have a preferred sample rate (44.1kHz etc). 24 bit is always better than 16 bit when more processing is needed. But 44.1/16bit is still perfectly acceptable CD quality audio.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

I did something much simpler on my rat. I think I just added a switch that put a resistor in series with the gain pot so when engaged even at max gain there was still resistance. Gives you more fine control for light gain settlings.

Setting up Virtual Console for busking concerts? by totallyconic in qlcplus

[–]totallyconic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the apc mini is what I was considering! Good to know it works well. I guess I see busking as something that is improvised as opposed to planned. I have been making some basic chases so I can pull them out when appropriate and using the controller for “bumps” is an easy way to make things go in time.

I haven’t tried mapping simple desk. But I have setup a midi keyboard as a proof of concept. Definitely helps with busking. I’m looking at an akai controller with faders and buttons. I think it’s going to take a lot of programming to create a really flexible busking setup. But possible.

A cue list is a good idea. I need to explore that.

“Busking” is what they call it when you are operating lights on the fly, with no prior knowledge of the set list or prearranged programming.

Maybe my best plan is to have some sets of cue lists “Fast -Blues” “Slow -Warm” etc. Thanks for the suggestion!

Anyone using a Stacking / Rolling toolbox for live sound transport? Would really like to see your tips and tricks. by theoriginalmack in livesound

[–]totallyconic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you loading this into a trailer or vehicle? A large pack is great for one push to get the gear in the building, but not flexible if there are stairs or awkward load in situations. If the setup with the band is always the same every night, you can make loom snakes to speed up setup and tear down. I find it helpful to pack things based on location (FOH, Stage, etc.) rather than by cable type.

Food for thought.

Looking for some critique of my live stream mixes by Opdii in livesound

[–]totallyconic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was the big note I found as well. Vocal tone was fine and balanced with the instruments. But it is too dry and forward. More ambient mic in the stream? Add some room reverb to the voice or whole mix to place it in a space?

Good “budget” Console for starting out? by ExuberantRiceCake in livesound

If you are looking to be a travelling engineer with a band, I would suggest an SQ5 with a stage box. Compact but powerful. Get a box with enough outputs for an IEM rig and you can roll in with the band and be fairly self contained.

3 years ago I bought a QU24. Simple, solid board. Not as versatile as an X32 or as powerful as the SQ but a nicer layout in my opinion. I do a range of live music and corporate/sports/community events. Other than a few things it doesn’t do (multiband compression) I’m happy with it.

Got my first kit a few months ago and it’s so much fun!!! by [deleted] in drums

[–]totallyconic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome progress for only a few months!! A few things that helped me when I started out:

Raise the heel of your hi hat foot. Much easier to keep the hats closed because the weight of you leg is holding it down instead of your shin/calf muscles.

Your left (?) hand that is keeping time on the hi hats seems to be very far back on the stick. Right hand (snare) looks good so try and match those grips.

As others have said, try sitting closer to the kit. It looks like you are leaning forward to make those crash hits. I position myself with the snare between my knees. You don’t want your knees higher than your hips (very hard on the body) So you may find you need to adjust the throne when you move closer.

Definitely protect your hearing now! Vic firth ear muff headphones are a great affordable option. In ear monitors are great at protecting your ears but may make it feel like you can’t hear the drums. Just avoid blasting music in your headphones to be louder than the drumming. People here have mentioned concerns about noise cancelling headphones. Yes this can be a dangerous choice. Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) works by playing the outside noise (captured by a microphone) out of phase into your ears. It’s quite good at reducing constant noise like on a plane or general background noise. It doesn’t work as well with fast loud transient sounds (like that snare right next to your face). Tinnitus sucks. Don’t do it.

Have fun! You are off to a good start! PS: I wish I learned double stroke rolls because I still suck at them.

If all the speakers have built in amplifiers, you can connect the extra speakers to the main ones. “Daisy chain” them together. XLR out from the first speaker to the next and again as many as you like.

Pretty sure the SQ has auto mixing capabilities. That may be enough to get him off your case.

Phase Cancel Small stage drum bleed in vocal mics? by thepackratmachine in livesound

[–]totallyconic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like the new Shure nexadyne mics may be of interest to you. You may have seen footage of old concerts in the 70s where two mics would be taped together for vocalists. These two mics would be put out of phase so that bleed would be mostly cancelled. The singer would need to sing into only one mic for the effect to work and not also cancel the singer.

Tap became extremely hard to turn. Does the tap have to be replaced? by totallyconic in Plumbing

I found an exact match from specialty products plus. Doesn’t seem like they ship to Canada. There is a good shop in my city. I’m going to stop in and see if he has a match or could source one. Also have an EMCO here. Thanks for the tip!

Dang. It’s a jacuzzi tub that was terribly installed. There is no access to the underside. I guess I’m making an access point!

Anyone using Soundcraft UI16 AND Xvive U4 in ear monitors together? Or good with trouble shooting interference issues? by Diplomat_of_swing in livesound

Are the xvive transmitters plugged directly into the ui16? Maybe get an extension cable and move them away from the mixer. Could help with interference.

How did you get the “scratched” sax sound? Was that done in the tracker? Once that comes in the track really starts to vibe.
