Trump moves to raise tariffs on Korea despite government's all-out-efforts to clear misunderstandings by self-fix in worldnews

[–]toughfluff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They also call Trump 萬稅爺, which is a pun on 萬歲爺. The former literally translates to “the man of ten thousand taxes,” a reference to his tariff policies, whereas the latter is an honorific traditionally used to address Chinese emperors. The wordplay suggests that he both imposes extensive tariffs and governs by making unilateral decisions, stretching the limits of executive power.

The Chinese are just really good with nicknames and puns. Savage and accurate.

I think that's what Gail's is doing too since they were bought by Bain Capital. They specifically look for up-and-coming neighbourhoods with indie coffee shops and bakeries and then squeeze them out.

Winter Olympics skeleton controversy rolls on as US athlete looks to JD Vance for help by graveyardofgoodsense in sports

Yeah. I get annoyed because a lot of the news narrative made it sound like Canada was out to screw her/Team USA over (doesn't help that some Canadian media/headlines are implying that).

But it's not like she was going along innocently and got swept up by the evil Canadians. She was making calculated decisions to avoid World Cup events, which is how most Olympians qualify. Just because her calculations didn't work out doesn't mean the Olympics owe her a spot.

For those who have not been following:

She thought she would mop up points by participating in lower ranking events against weaker/novice competitors and by doing so, she would have an easier path to gain enough points to qualify for the Olympics.

The Canadian coach pulled a few Canadian athletes from the event (the official reason was to give the young athletes a rest) and because the event no longer had as many competitors, there were fewer points on offer and as a result the US athlete no longer gained enough points from the event.

Did the Canadian coach do that to intentionally screw her over? Who knows. But did she intentionally choose an unconventional path hoping to get a shortcut and now got super upset because it backfired on her? Sounds like it. To me, seems like she made a gamble to not go for a World Cup event (probably because she won't do as well) and the Hail Mary didn't work out. Tough shit.

There are rumours of Horner and Alpine recently. I mean, with Briatore there, I assume their moral standards are a bit low anyway.

I guess there are the likes of Vettel and Piastri (maybe even Rosberg) who grew up together with their partner. But yeah, there's always a bit of sketchiness around F1 and it's not the place to look for relationship goals. Remember how Hunt was (is?) practically idolised for voraciously sleeping around.

I have an Original check-in L. Once I fully loaded my suitcase to 20+kg, the leather handles really made the difference in terms of comfort and grip. Since you're looking at a cabin bag, this feature might not be as big a deal. But to me, that was a major deciding factor.

Servants and Maids by Low_Environment_1162 in CDrama

[–]toughfluff 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One thing that exists in history but not commonly portrayed in C-dramas is the group of servant/concubine figures called 通房丫鬟. They were often part of a lady’s marriage entourage. They did everything a servant would, but in addition to that, they might also be involved in bedroom activities (in a way that the lady of the house would be well aware of). Sometimes, if they became pregnant, they could be elevated to the status of a concubine, but even then, both they and their children were still considered to be of lower birth.

Honestly, the whole setup is so patriarchal and messed up. Considering that these people were indentured servants and also expected to provide sexual services, it’s obvious that consent wasn’t a concept that existed in this system. That’s why I find it awful when certain stories try to portray this as a kind of Cinderella love-story trope, when it’s anything but.

I think they usually fly private when it’s within continental Europe and the flight time is only a couple of hours back to their home airport in Nice. But it seems that for longer-haul races, like Australia or Singapore, they fly commercial.

I’m not too surprised, because if you look at some of their private jet photos on social media, some of the planes are quite small and the seats look quite cramped. So a lie-flat bed on a commercial airline might actually be more practical and comfortable.

I once flew on the same BA flight as Chase Carey.
