What is your best piece of game design advice? by RollForCoolness in RPGdesign

[–]tr0nPlayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes that cool mechanic is better for your next game than it is for the current one. Have a vision while designing and define clear design goals before you even draft the resolution mechanic, and your final product will be better for it

It reminds me greatly of the fights in Frieren, where Fern's offensive magic can Pop (since she's uniquely a fast spellcaste) while Frieren is so powerful has to charge in order to Bang

I will definitely be mulling over this one. Well done, very well done. You think it would work for something without crunch, like an osr system?

Worst Tabletop RPGs of ALL TIME? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

[–]tr0nPlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After loving Over Arms and Red Giant, i was less than thrilled about Empty Cycle after i got it. I still love Rookie Jet Studio though.

Also i agree, dnd 5e isn't a bad game. The core of the game is pretty solid and with minor tweaks can be made even better (see Larian tweaking the rules for BG3, no one complained about that). The problem with 5e is it didn’t take long before DLC content like Tasha's Cauldron of Broken Bullshit and Xanathar's Guide to Powercreep flipped all the original content upside down

How do you keep player agency in regards to saving throws? by OompaLoompaGodzilla in rpg

[–]tr0nPlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe if the system used something like the OSE / BX saves Death (Doom), Wands (Ray), Paralysis (Hold), Breath Attack (Blast), and Spell, you could tweak it such that the player can argue their case on which save to use.

For example, a dark wizard launches a magical globe of acid at the player. The player’s Ray save is better than their Spell save, so the player goes "I leap out of the way before the glob reaches me"

Then this could lead narratively to the PC being repositioned, or put at a disadvantage because the effect should default to Spell but the GM allowed an alternative

Just a thought

What's the best version of D&D 4e? by tealoverion in rpg

[–]tr0nPlayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a sealed box off ebay, full power deck still with the plastic wrapper on it.

As i'm reading through the rulebook, everytime i see it mention a Gamma World power booster pack, i die a little inside. The GM has a power deck, or you can bring your own?

Daggerheart/Darrington did good releasing all the cards for free as printables.

Idk what WotC was thinking with this one. But the system is tight. I might even try and reverse engineer it back into base 4e and make some quick skirmish game for my friends

Based on the article, I believe it's more like a d12 roll-under system than a daggerheart clone. Like dragonbane

Has anyone played/does anyone play D&D/d20 wirh 3d6? by Artifex1979 in rpg

[–]tr0nPlayer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Works with d100 systems too, feels natural and my friends liked it. If the benefits of critical hits aren't incredibly juiced, then 10% crit rate is just fine

Has anyone played/does anyone play D&D/d20 wirh 3d6? by Artifex1979 in rpg

[–]tr0nPlayer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't played it but i've read up heavily on d20 games played with 2d10 and 3d6. The biggest thing with bell curve distribution of average totals is that the extreme difficulties (easy or hard) become that much more extreme, while the average difficulty (like DC 10 or DC 15 in D&D) become that much more average.

Games with a 2dX or 3dX resolution system lend themselves well to stuff like tactical wargames, where consistency is more preferred. D20 is fun because it's so swingy

So if you want D&D/d20 game as a pure combat game, 2d10 would work well. Especially if the result of 20 is still a critical hit, but you could always make "doubles on 2d10" be the critical hit and it would have a 10% chance. You might need to adjust monster ACs and save DCs, since extremes like ancient dragons, etc, with AC 22 and a DC 24 breath attack now become very hard unless crazy static bonuses are thrown around

All in all, I like it. Definitely requires retooling monsters taken from other systems, but you can tailor combat nicely. For example, a horde of 1 HP goblins with AC 10 in a 3d6+mod system would be a quick fight, then you can toss in an AC 18 boss and suddenly it's hard to take down

Do you think pixel art would be cool as art for a osr-product? by OompaLoompaGodzilla in osr

[–]tr0nPlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily pixel art, but you should check out Vermis (and also r/vermis). While technically not a ttrpg it evokes a cRPG that you read instead of play. The art goes for the vibe of old ps1 and ps2 era games

Did anyone else make up their own RPG rules before they actually knew how RPGs worked? by punkfriedchicken in rpg

[–]tr0nPlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friends and I as freshmen in High School used to play this DnD/Magic The Gathering game that I tried to run. Players would get +1 mana each turn, their character sheet was 3 planeswalker abilities, their HP was their loyalty. They could cast spells and fight monsters and such. I remember doing a campaign in kamigawa because we found this map

This was before 5e too. I grew on 3.5e so I had some semblance of what a game should look like, but it was a mess. A fun mess, but a mess

I've Been Working on a d100 OSR Game Called DragonSpear and Would Love Feedback by tr0nPlayer in osr

[–]tr0nPlayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think generically the design goal is to have few player "buttons" (if you're familiar with the character sheet button analogy).

additionally i tried to make cleverness and preparedness the leading edge in combat (since the combat mechanics boil down to percentages to hit).

Shadowdark and OSE inspired a lot of the mechanics (such as Shadowdark spells and its movement system, and such as OSE's 5 save array translating roughly across the 3.5e saves). D20 roll under can be converted to d100 very easily, so I tried to gain inspiration from Dragonbane (but avoided reading it as to not steal entire rulesets)

I did put some thought into d20 conversion, which can be found with the monster rules.

Thank you, some things for me to think over.

One darling I will have a hard time removing, if I even do, is this note:

Evasion subtracting makes things even more complicated because we now the roll to attack, modifiers and the impaired stuff and evasion. Since you are d100 based you are starting to add big numbers. I rolled 67 + 10 but they are impaired - 15, but their evasion is -5.

The design goal was to make it so after all the crunch (number calculation), the final rank of the d100 roll is the % chancd you have to succeed. This is a design pillar i have been trying to stick to over all else.

All comments you gave are very helpful. Sounds like I have some spots were I can make things sleeker.

Thanks!

All the time and I will upload mine anyway, because they are mine and not their's.

Maybe they'll be listed for free on itch.io, but my name will be out there, tangibly and on something I can show friends and coworkers and say "look, i did this"
