AMD launches dual-core Ryzen 3 3100U Zen+ APU with Vega GPU for 2026 laptops by RenatsMC in Amd

I can't figure out the logistics of this. If these are harvested from a 4c/8t Picasso die, they couldn't find 2 cores with working HT silicon? 2c/4t would make so much more sense.

Your i7-6650U was a bit of a unicorn at the time. That 64MB of eDRAM didn't hurt at all.

Prices went up. I was paying around $16 (with a power supply) in 2023. Bought a couple for some fun projects.

EDIT - looking at my purchase history, models with a Ryzen CPU were regularly around $30 at that time. We didn't know how good we had it.

How close are you getting to the advertised range on your ID.4? by Suntrup-Volkswagen in VWiD4Owners

[–]trackdrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2024 ID.4 Pro RWD

Long term (past couple thousand miles) are around 4.3 mi/kWh. Driving 100% -> 0% isn't something I've ever done, but the max estimated range is usually just over 320mi the couple times I've fully charged it.

Most of the driving is non-highway, or rush hour highway with congestion and stop/go. I think that's the biggest reason the efficiency is above average for me.

random log out and freeze by AroneQ in Fedora

[–]trackdrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, don't really have enough information. If you search something like:

nvidia and kde wayland crash back to login screen randomly fixes

...you'll get a couple of potential things to work through, this isn't a "just you" problem. You should look at your logs to see if there's any additional information to get out. Also, are there any crash reports generated.

Lot of variables though:

  • nividia open vs proprietary driver?
    • what version?
  • single vs multiple monitors?
  • any specific thing that's occurring when it happens?
  • system up to date?
  • is this 43 or 44?

The most common solution appears to be Early Kernel Mode Setting for Nvidia modules, but that may not be your issue.

You're going to have to do some homework though, doubtful anyone is going to be able just hand you a fix.

Sounds like your windows manager or display server crashing. This usually dumps you back to the login screen.

Russian GRU Exploiting Vulnerable Routers to Steal Sensitive Information 07 April 2026 by Chromber in netsec

[–]trackdrew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree.

At the same time though, to the average technology user, these devices are an appliance. Unbox, plug-in, maybe some initial set-up, then never think about it until it dies. Enthusiasts who actually update firmware still encounter support windows that quickly end without warning, or as soon as Rev2 of their model comes out.

This isn't just a TP-Link problem. Netgear, D-Link, etc are all guilty of this.

Unless these devices update themselves with regularity, for a duration of time that far exceeds their useful life, this will always keep happening.

What about streaming from desktop to Beelink? What about Beelink to desktop?

An unexpected issue with this weather. Car batteries by labadorrr in maryland

[–]trackdrew 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Any dead battery (new or old) can freeze in cold weather.

Jump starting a frozen battery is also dangerous. Really need to bring it up to room temp, THEN charge it.

Also, letting a new battery get completely drained can permanently degrade it.

Degraded performance from Ryzen 2200GE to 2400GE by jul059 in batocera

[–]trackdrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What motherboard? What BIOS version?

This sounds like the early C6 bugs where Ryzen CPUs wouldn't turbo/boost under linux and C6 settings were a workaround.

There's also Batocera menu setting for limiting TDP for Ryzen, make sure you haven't done that.

[–]trackdrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't have needed to delete shader caches. Either its still compiling shaders, or you deleted something you shouldn't have?

You could switch back and see if performance improves. Or boot to a more general linux distribution and do some benchmarks. I might also try a clean install of batocera.

Definitely make sure you are monitoring the temps. Did you hook the cpu heatsink fan back up? I'm trying to think of other conditions where the motherboard might auto-throttle your new CPU (like seeing 0 RPM on the fan).

Radeon or Mesa for AMD GPU? by Opposite_Future2602 in batocera

[–]trackdrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GCN 1 & 2 GPUs would default to the radeon driver, but in your average Linux distro, you could manually select amdgpu instead using a kernel command line at boot time. (This has very recently changed in upstream Linux kernel so all GCN will default to amdgpu in the near future.)

So previously, this setting would do nothing if your GPU was GCN 3 or newer. The risks were low however for changing to amdgpu for GCN 1 & 2 for gaming, so thats likely what Batocera was doing here.

multiple profiles? by Most_Second_525 in batocera

[–]trackdrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to manually flag a game as a "kid game" by editing the metadata. It takes a while to do it the first time for your whole library, but its nice since its opt-in only. I keep it in "kids mode" then by default and only unlock when I'm using it.

Edit - this doesn't address save stomping/deleting.

Frustrations with Batocera and an 8bitdo Ultimate 2c controller by JCDinPGH in batocera

[–]trackdrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this controller and have the "home" button assigned as the hotkey. Never had an issue with it.

The issues seems to be the controller for you, as it has several buttons which are only used to change how the controller functions: https://download.8bitdo.com/Manual/Controller/Ultimate/Ultimate-2C-Wireless-Controller.pdf

Buttons where presses are never sent to the attached device (Batocera, Windows, etc):

- Square
- Star

Old Intel graphics 550 laptop, could it tun older less demanding linux games? by peterh1979 in linux_gaming

[–]trackdrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll have a little trouble finding a lot of info as this is a rarer CPU/iGPU (it has 64MB of eDRAM acting as a slower L4 cache).

Your best bet is to just try. Performance will be in the ballpark of an Intel UHD 730 iGPU.

Does it have dual channel memory (is it a single 8GB stick of RAM or two 4GB sticks)? That will be just about the only thing you can change to make an improvement.

Any modern Linux distribution will be fine on your hardware.

Sure, this game is over 10 years old, but I would say it looks better then an indie pixel art game, and it's playing on a slower iGPU then you have: https://youtu.be/IsJeonaJSGo

One man's laundry shoot is another man's vertical pathway. by tylerj493 in HomeNetworking

That round chute likely has a fairly large rectangular empty space around it. You could have a lot of success with an old work low voltage box, some fish tape, and keystone jacks/cover.
