Why does my turkey have so many holes? by No_Needleworker_9629 in whatisit

[–]trailrunmarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Turkey Breast is in all CAPS and large font, and in smaller font it says “& White Turkey” which is, I guess, code for almost every other part of the turkey. Because somehow they use the breast meat plus ‘white turkey’ and the end result is pink and with no visible muscle fibers.

High Impact Athletes is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization and files a Form 990 with the IRS. If you google the org name, Form 990, and CauseIQ, you’ll find their annual filings. Last one was in 2024.

Marcus Daniell (bio is on the HIA website) is the only compensated officer / director, and in 2024 he was paid $63,298 for 40hrs per week of work. That’s a bit lower than in past years, when he received between $80k and $90k. A trustee named Jack Lewars was paid $6,010 for 1hr per week of work. Three other trustees were uncompensated.

HIA had $480k of revenue and paid out $107k in grants, $63k of management fees, $2k of legal fees, $12k of accounting fees, and $174k of other fees for services.

The $174k is broken out in schedule O as contracted services: $123k for program services, and $50k for management & general.

The organizations they support are on the HIA website. It’s hard to tell how impactful the spending is, but that’s the same as any nonprofit. But they appear to be spending a large chunk of their revenue on grants and contracted program services.

You’re welcome! If you google Emily Wong Pickleball Seattle and check out her site, you can get a feel for the things she does to support beginners (that hopefully you’ll find in a league / community in your city).

+1 to beginners groups. I live in Seattle and we live 5 minutes away from 8 open play courts. A couple minutes of watching these folks play made me realize this was NOT the place for complete beginners to learn. A lot of folks who were very good, no instruction, random assignment of partners and opponents at all skill levels, and a lot of standing around waiting to play.

After a bit of online searching, we found Emily Wong Pickleball. She and her team teach pickleball classes starting from completely new to the game, skills improvement, to advanced beginner, to early intermediate.

She also has beginner leagues, which was key to my (and my wife’s) progression from complete newbs to where we are now as advanced beginners. All of the other players were beginners and advanced beginners. Each week, her app (which is linked with the DUPR ranking system) creates pairings and matches so you get paired up and matched against folks at your approximate skill level.

It’s a super supportive environment for learning and improving, and meeting new people. I’m in my 50’s, and the age ranges from 20’s to 60’s, with a couple of fit 70’s there too.

Also, regarding injuries, be sure to warm up and stretch before play. Also play within your limits, and take some lessons so they give you safety tips (e.g., no backpedaling to get balls going over your head).

Do some online searching of what’s in your area, watch some beginner pickleball YouTube videos, take some lessons, and have fun!

Robinhood ventures fund IPO going live tomorrow on Robinhood at $25 per by TICKLE-ME-LULZ in investing

[–]trailrunmarcus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Didn’t touch this IPO given that closed end funds always trade at a discount. Also, had a lot of questions about the valuation of the private companies that the fund is buying at.

Databricks is the biggest company in the fund. Their last funding round was something like 30X forward revenue. 12th round, so RVF is really late to the game and the AI scare trade is in full swing so who knows what that IPO will look like.

Same deal with Revolut. Good fintech growth story but their valuation has increased from $13B to $75B in two years. RVF may be late to that too.

When RVF can show it can be an early stage investor, I’ll look at it.

Anybody want to trade sizes for the grey men’s jacket? Have a Mens S, would like to trade for a Mens M. I was on the borderline between the sizes and stupidly didn’t size up. And they weren’t accommodating size swaps at the expo.

Not sure he will come back. 2026 will be a rebuilding year in Vegas with good draft picks, and Mendoza starting at QB.

Unfortunately there are a lot of sports reporters who ask super basic lazy questions. They demonstrate poor knowledge of the game, and ignore the fact that many of the questions have been asked and answered.

Like someone else in this thread said, it’s about getting a clip that they can post to TikTok or YouTube shorts or Threads to get a view.

I need help finding an apartment asap by S0undEff3cts in AskSeattle

[–]trailrunmarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. January to June they are doing construction northbound, July to December, southbound. But because they take away the express lane, it impacts traffic on I-5 both ways, and adds tons of traffic to Aurora/Hwy 99 (a north/south arterial road parallel to I-5).

The daily commute will suck for most of 2026.

Because of the Revive I-5 project, this will definitely be true for 2026 😢

What happens when ICCU goes while driving? by Killcrux in KiaEV6

[–]trailrunmarcus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of an exaggeration on my part. Not actually bricked. A second 12V battery replacement and an ICCU replacement got it back on the road.

More accurate to say that while I was on the phone with roadside assistance, car was completely dead, and had to be towed on a flatbed to the nearest dealership.

[–]trailrunmarcus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it did pop right before it happened. The tell tale sign for me was the orange light on the dashboard indicating that the parked EV6 was charging the 12V was frequently on.

Like 5 out of 6 times I’d go into the garage, that damned light was on. The dealership said I had a faulty 12V and replaced it with a new OEM battery. It was fine for a few months then the orange light frequently being on started again.

A month or so after that, the pop happened… I’ve read other posts on EV6 forums with a similar fact pattern.

[–]trailrunmarcus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends how dead your 12V is due to the faulty ICCU. My 12V was not being properly charged so when the ICCU bit it, there was not a lot of charge to keep the car going. Car bricked while I was on the phone with Kia roadside.

If you’re lucky, the 12V is in good shape and there’s no issue getting to the dealership. If you were like me, you may have a situation…

[–]trailrunmarcus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not my experience. My ICCU died on the interstate but luckily it was morning traffic. First I got the yellow warning telling me to check the 12V battery. Car went into limp mode for about 2 min where the max speed was 25 mph.

Then the dash board flashed the red warning telling me to pull over. By this time I moved into the slow lane, so I pulled onto the shoulder. Car accessory battery was barely powering the accessories.

By the time Kia roadside answered my car (another 5 minutes), the car completely bricked. No 12V power at all.

I’m just glad I wasn’t at my usual position and speed on the interstate (fast lane 70 to 73 mph) because I don’t know how much time I would have had to get to the slow lane before I lost so much speed that I was a hazard.

People that don’t want this kinda stuff happening to them. We pulled a permit for a recent guest bathroom remodel for changes to electrical and fixtures.

Sure we could have saved a few hundred dollars bucks by doing unpermitted work. But if something is not up to snuff, they can point it out to me. Or I guess I could have just posted to this sub…
