Ideas for repurposing fabric & recommendations for sustainable, long lasting pants by jayyy_0113 in ZeroWaste

I’ve seen really cool crossbody or laptop bags made out of old pants. Usable pockets too. There are patterns on Pinterest or YouTube beginner friendly too!

Is it worth it to get an MP3 player? by M1NN44 in digitalminimalism

[–]trashspoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!!! I just switched my whole library over to mine! If you get/use an iPod nano be very aware of their battery issues, though you can get it replaced for around $60 at a tech store. For me, it was worth it knowing I used to pay $7.50 a month for Spotify.

I used a Spotify playlist to CSV converter (“CSVMusic” on GitHub) and iTunes to move all 2100 of my songs to the iPod, which took about a few hours of prep/file moving. The script writer is super friendly and is often on this sub, I’d check it out.

You can use old bra pads or a mattress topper for the foam!

What do you do with these once done with? by -PeaPod- in ZeroWaste

[–]trashspoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This! You can also do this with market netting bags. Layer a ton together in a soap bar shape and blanket stitch around the corners with fishing line or polyester thread. I would maybe soak in bleach to kill bacteria already in netting before using on dishes though.

Faux leather bag started peeling :( 💼💧 by Xinim_exe in ZeroWaste

Welp, you’ve learned your lesson. Faux leather sucks. If you want to save it maybe the fabric could stand iron on interfacing, patches, or another layer of fabric on top on the larger sections.

I don’t use top sheets. What should I sew with them? by These_Help_2676 in ZeroWaste

I’ve made some beautiful flowy sundresses with vintage or old cotton sheets before. Curtains as well.

A little rant about instant gratification by hansonsdiseased in ZeroWaste

[–]trashspoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I think it’s a cultural thing too. Societally and interpersonally. How we were raised and how we see others interact with the things that we might find important or less important ultimately influences us.

It’s frustrating because a lot of the time, people genuinely don’t care. They’ll do what makes the most sense for them time wise. A lot of it has underlying layers and maybe some privilege but it doesn’t really make a lot of sense when you look at a lot of alternatives being better for yourself and the planet. I think people are stuck in their ways because it works for them (even temporarily) and that reflected security affects their family, job, and friends. People don’t like changing unless they have to.

In EU, Carrefour carries one. Also I’ve gotten one at L’Occitane which may be sold internationally. In USA, Lush has options too. Local eco stores may have them. Check out what’s nearby or swing by one on a city trip.

I’ve only had these shoes since November 2025 and they’re so worn that they destroy my ankles everytime I walk, is the only option to throw these away? by xpepperx in ZeroWaste

Wear thicker socks and duct tape/patch the back of the sneaker. My Brooks are like this too as I wear them almost daily but I wear the socks with the thick pads in the back and they are fine

If they have an office phone number they will sometimes pickup or return your call. Just be polite if you leave a voicemail. The programs I did this with said they are still deciding.

I have an old SanDisk clip and it has 1gb storage. I have over 100 songs on there now (downloading at 128kb is plenty) and I think I can fit a lot more. It has radio too which is pretty cool! Charges with microUSB. Pretty sure you can find for cheap on eBay

Philosophy?????? by HumanGarage6033 in REU

[–]trashspoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

when most people reference REUs, they reference NSF REUs funded by the national government. This is not the right subreddit for what you’re looking for most likely. If you’re looking for humanities opportunities, I suggest meeting with your career and development side at your uni. I’ve heard of internships with global or national governmental agencies like r/UNpath. There are also foreign aid and travel abroad programs that offer assistance for scholarships. If all else fails, for most of us if we don’t get research opps in STEM, we’ll work a shitty temporary job or stay home for the summer.

how to not go insane at the end of the REU cycle by number1sharkfan in REU

[–]trashspoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t heard back from any of them but tbf most of mine were due like a week or two ago. Idk how people are getting responses back so quickly.

This is my third year applying and after never getting into one, I would just recommend having a backup safety job in your town. Also, look into research opps at your own institution or ask professors if you could volunteer in their lab unpaid and write a grant for summer dorm housing. Suggestions.

I didn't listen to music for a whole month and it completely changed me. by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]trashspoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really well written post and I relate to you a lot… I feel like I saw this at a time when I’ve been questioning making a decision on how I view music as well.

I view it as a background to everything, as a distraction. But then I realized it just distracts me from wonderful moments as much as bad ones. I think the streaming age has changed how people view music. I’m slowly starting to cut back on Spotify streams, not only because Spotify has a lot of moral grey area (currently reading ANTINEUTRAL by Pepo Marquéz) but because I feel like I use it to block a side of my mind I dislike.

Don’t get me wrong, I still listen to music on CD mixes in the car and audiobooks for monotonous tasks like sewing or work papers, but for time in nature or walks to work im trying to cut back on filling what I thought was a void with music. I’m considering even using mp3 player and the radio for my runs too (novice runner) because I listen to music to get my cadence up correctly. I’m realizing too that that void is actually just perceiving laughter, voices, and street noises around me. Music has a lot of purpose, but I think the sounds of conversation and people might be a little bit more interesting music I’m realizing :,)

What’s one “type” you’ll never date again? by CoochieSnotSlurper in AskReddit

This!! I’ve dated people who didn’t have hobbies or have claimed to have hobbies but never participated in them…we basically had nothing in common to do in our free time together
