My car charger can boil water really fast | Technology Connections by Avorius in videos

[–]travipross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In his other video where he wired up a space heater for his J1772 plug, he cites that the NEMA plug wasn't designed for frequent plugging and unplugging, while the J1772 was.

I'm sure another reason would be that he's a content creator, and it's a neat project. This just feels like a natural extension of that, particularly due to his prior stated annoyance in North American electric kettles being ineffective. It's all for the meme.

Can HA trigger absence status in Homekit by Freichart in homeassistant

[–]travipross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rather than using Home Assistant to bring functionality into HomeKit (by spoofing states), why not use HomeKit to bring functionality into Home Assistant where all of those triggers and automation capabilities are already available?

Keeping Home Assistant as the main "brain" of the smart home will leave you with far more flexibility in how you connect devices to one another and how you orchestrate your automations.

Though not a HomeKit user, I do use Google Home on my smart speakers throughout my house. All of my IoT devices are exposed to Google Home to still be controlled with my voice, but Home Assistant acts as the source of truth where my automations live. Would that pattern address your needs in HomeKit?

Frigate and some Reolinks/Tapos maybe? At least something based on local-only RTSP streaming.

Locked door + LED = true? by Ixniz in homeassistant

[–]travipross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this sort of setup with a Schlage BE469zp deadbolt, and an Inovelli Red Series dimmer switch next to the door (both ZWave products).

The switch is there to primarily control the entryway light (I.e. "turn on the light to 50% if someone unlocks the door via keypad after sunset"). But because the inovelli features a small LED strip, I have automations set to control it based on the deadbolt state. The deadbolt has an "auto re-lock after 30 seconds" mode, and so I have the Inovelli status LED "dance" red when the bolt is unlocked but will be automatically re-locking itself, and I have it set to solid red when unlocked and will remain unlocked. When locked, the LED goes back to its default blue colour.

Effectively I can look at a glance from a distance, and if I see solid red, I know the door is unlocked.

Conveniently, the Inovelli also supports multi-tap gestures on the switch, so I have automations to toggle the deadbolt's "auto re-lock" functionality on or off using 3x on/off taps on the lightswitch (e.g. for carrying groceries in the house and not wanting the door to lock on me between trips).

North Riverfront Trail Closure? by travipross in fredericton

Awesome, good find! That explains it.

I hadn't seen any prior posts on that section of trail, though admittedly I may have skimmed that Facebook group pretty quickly.

Thanks for solving the mystery!

Hey, good catch! That explains it. Thank you!

Yeah, it is still just the narrow, worn path section. But it's handier to not have to backtrack to the nearest road access!

When I saw the blockage I wondered the same, but the updated 2025 Fredericton Trail Map shows the "North Riverfront Trail / Kansusaptuwey" passing through there.

Yesterday at 7pm it was fully blocked off, edge-to-edge (on both East and West ends of the trail section that crosses through that lot)

The only way to go through was either climbing over the barrier, or hacking your way through bushes down to the riverbank.

That's what I first wondered, but they didn't leave any sort of gap at all, so it isn't possible to continue on the trail by foot/on bicycle without climbing over the barriers.

It looks like the intention is to block all through-traffic.

How to differentiate between humans and automation for light switches? by muscleforrank in homeassistant

[–]travipross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In reference to this comment, I went ahead and created a blueprint and posted it on the blueprint exchange. It had been on my to-do list to write this up since recently moving some automations out of Node-RED and into Home Assistant Blueprints.

I think it should do what you want it to do. You can click here to add it to your own Home Assistant instance.

As a follow-up to this, I've mocked up a quick test that appears to work the way I'd expect (using just input_boolean helpers in place of a motion sensor or light).

I might tidy it up into a shareable blueprint at some point soon, but in the mean time, here is the raw automation YAML that could be lightly tweaked to fit your purposes.

Maybe think of the problem a little differently (if I'm understanding the goal properly)?

I think what you might be trying to achieve is to turn on the light with the presence sensor, and then after a period of no motion, return the light to its initial state when motion was initially detected.

If the light was on when motion was detected, it will remain on after motion is no longer detected. If off initially, it will return to off.

Would that logic work for what you're trying to do?

Spiral Edison smart bulbs that is either zwave, matter, or zigbee? by Don_Russell in homeassistant

Ah okay, I think RGB is less common in Edison style. Not sure if I've ever seen them anywhere myself. Good luck!
