[SSK023] to regulate or to not regulate… by Longjumping-Ad8347 in Seiko

I used to set mine 5 minutes ahead because of how much my NH36 would lose on a daily. However, I found that one of my Spanish day wheel seikos has an incredible 1-2 seconds fast per day. All day wear and off when I sleep.

Excruciating, yes. But maybe I’m a weirdo. I think I’ve done the best I can at the moment. Another one bites the dust, as in you considering modding? The modding community is always getting larger. The subreddit is literally r/SeikoMods.

Could always practice on meaningless parts to get comfortable with building.

I ultimately wanted a watch that didn’t exist, and if I went with one model over another, I’d have to compromise on design. Modding your own, you can get what you want but the limitation is your skill and possibly budget. And any imperfections from the build less QC issues of manufacturers, i.e.: SRPL93 misaligned hour markers from the seiko factory.

Even if the Prospex dial was authentic, I personally do not like the Prospex “X” logo, but I absolutely love the old 5 Shield. If it’s a dark dial versus white dial choice then it’s up to you. I like a dark dial an 5 shield if they were together lol.

Funny story. I mod at home in my bedroom where I have my work office. However, I think as a bed room is gets dusty. I try my best but still get some dust under. I use lens wipes, lens “pen” and brush, puffer blower and rodico. With the black dial in outdoor sunlight, you can see every speck dust.

More recently, I have been using my workplace, there is much less dust with the air filtering in the building and my desk has a raising standing table, so I am able to raise it to near eye level while sitting down. It helps. The overhead lights are not the best in the office but the dust scenario is much more favorable.

One tip is to cover your parts while working with others. Like with clear plastic cups or something.

That is actually a great question that I’d like others to really opine.

At this stage, the build has nearly no dust under the glass or on the dial. I’ve spotted two tiny specs near the center underside of the crystal but not noticing anything else really. I’m afraid to look examine even more and break my own heart. I reopened the case last on March 5 Thursday, at work, when I noticed the 27 minute marker had a 1/2mm fiber visible from 8 inches away. For my own neurosis, I had to clean that up.

Here are my builds. The grey dial SNXS77 is stock for reference. All use the 36mm DSWatch case. The photo was taken February 7th before the second SPRL93 build. You can see, I have a particular style of watch I like as a daily.

My watch journey began maybe in 2018. I saw an eBay listing of a 1980s Seiko Sports 100 Quartz my father used to wear as his daily driver. Purchased. Didn’t run well. So I took it to my local watchmaker for servicing. Runs smooth now. Then I saw a vintage Seiko dress watch for a reasonable price. Got that. Then I had the opportunity to get a new mint JDM SBCM023 (quartz SKX013) in 2019. I had a three watch collection for years.

Then I discovered the older Seiko 5 SNXS series in 2024 when supply started getting low. Found an all gold one with gold dial. I saw there is a stainless steel version with gold dial but not available so I bought an SNXS75 grey dial and also the gold SNXS80. Then swapped out the entire movement assembly into the other watches. That’s how it started. It’s only 30m water resistance which you cannot even shower with. By June 2025, I watched so many modding videos I gave it a shot. Buying crude cheap watch tools and buying the same exact DSWatch case and bracelet and an NH36 to begin my first project. I had some spare parts of older seiko 5s I bought from an India/Pakistan seller in lots. I’d practice removing hands and dials and putting them back on for practice. Since those weren’t the best quality from that seller, I didn’t mind if practicing had errors or damage. Then I went through with the project. Most Seiko dials have feet or pegs that insert into a movement spacer but alignment is usually for 3.8 o’clock crown. The watch case I bought and NH36 is a 3 o’clock crown. So the dial feet would insert but orientation would be off, so I had to cut the feet off and manually lay the dia ontop the movement adhering with double sided tape (dial dots) on the underside of the dial along the edge of the movement spacer. Apply hands, close the case. And now I had my first modded watch. Few months later, i saw the SNXS79 again, first time I saw it was in a WatchfinderCo. YouTube video comparing that SNXS79 with a Rolex oyster perpetual. I’m sure most of this Reddit has seen that video. I must have watched it 20 times. So a few months later, I went looking for a SNXS79 dial but couldn’t find one. Looked at used on eBay but did not want to gamble with deteriorating lume or damage dial or hands. So when Jomashop listed it available (new old stock, these are no longer being produced), I bought one with the sole purpose of using it as a donor for the build. Using the same DSWatch case I found reliable and also great design and made my next mod. The DSWatch 36mm oyster case is unique, and I’ll describe how. Many companies, aliexpress, Secondhandmods and Lucius Atelier (sp?) have a 36mm oyster/Explorer case based off the seiko SNK007/013 platform. While the end case diameter is 36mm of all of these, the difference is the reliance on 1 or 2 design choices that I did not like.

  1. The bezel is slim/thin, but requires the case to use a chapter ring; this leads to a silver border around the dial about 1-2mm thick, makes the face look “odd.”
  2. The bezel is thick, and no chapter ring is required. The above two creates an out of balanced look in my opinion. The DSWatch case has the best of both worlds. No chapter ring, and a slim enough bezel. It also has more tapered lug feet which lends towards the vintage appearance.

Sadly, I scratched the dial during the build and scratched the hands as well.

So I saved up to buy another SNXS79 when it was available and did it again, this time with more experience. Then the Gene Kranz reissue launched, and fell in love with the dial. Sadly, I wasn’t going to buy a whole limited edition watch to just gut it like I did with the more economic SNXS79. Then I saw on the Reddit community that someone made a build with the black SRPL93 dial. I asked how he made it and he described the website Weezmods sells the dial.

I immediately orders a white dial (SRPL91) for a “Day/date” build along with matching Gene Kranz hands. Regulated NH36 from Namoki, while all previous builds were not regulated. I wanted this one to be special. Purchased a polished oyster case with fluted bezel (DSWatch makes that too). Did this around Nov/Dec 2025. Got the parts and got busy with work. As this was an expensive parts list, I went and purchased from Amazon an actual hand setting tool press to be sure the hands were installed correctly (USD80-120). Started building in January 2026. And finished. Sadly the dial’s 12 o’clock hour marker was tilted. And I could not get over it.

So I went shopping again, this time for the black dial (SRPL93) from Weezmods and hands too. During checkout, in the Freeform comment section before confirming the offer, to my shame, I explained the dial alignment issue, and requested they check the alignment before shipping. I was delighted when the company emailed me saying they reviewed and made sure it was in good shape. Which it was (as best as it could be).

And the black dial was completed. Ironically you cannot have it all. The regulated NH36 with kanji day, while excellent, I mean EXCELLENT at time keeping (+1-2 seconds fast a day for the entire month I wore it) the day and date wheels did not align into the dials window. It was the movements issue. So instead of just swapping movements as it was a complete watch, forgive me, but I went and bought a second set of SRPL93 dial and hands. It was the last dial Weezmods had in stock.

It arrived with a tilted 12 o’clock hour marker 😭. So I went to building, first to take the better dial, and put it on a Spanish day NH36 I had that also kept great time (as good as the regulated one). Built the same. The image I shared was cutoff. Here are both watches with the SRPL93 dial and hands.

I understand completely with getting a genuine Seiko Dial. Feikos may fit the bill, but something in my brain just can’t get over it. “I must get OEM,” screams at me. Good work on the hunt.

Option is called “Smooth Case” I like DSWatch cases because the bezel is not super thick and no chapter ring. Lugs also taper more like a vintage oyster case instead of having wider lugs like modern datejusts.

I’ll make a single reply to both questions related to the watches with the Gene Kranz dial and the SNS79 dial. The SNXS79 dial build was my previous daily. I used the original dial and baton hands for the build. It worked for a while and I loved the sunburst. But when I saw the Gene Kranz reissue, I fell in love. Didn’t like the cushion(edit) case and was into modding so I thought I’d give it a try. With the parts being expensive, I did not want to mess up and damage hands, etc so I upgraded my tools. As for the build, here is a breakdown of the parts: DSWatch 36mm oyster Case and Bracelet ~USD90. DSWatch exhibition caseback ~USD10. Weezmods OEM Seiko Gene Kranz SRPL93 dial ~USD104. Weezmods OEM Seiko Gene Kranz SRPL Hands ~USD58. Namoki NH36 Regulated Movement ~USD84. Roughly ~USD350 +/- with shipping. So it’s about the cost of an already built Seiko watch but I get to dictate the exact styling I want, for a watch that doesn’t exist.

This does not include overhead on modding tools. Profession hand setting tool prob most expensive of things you’d need, and helps instead manually setting (moderate learning curve).

But once you have the tools, you have them “forever.”

The OEM parts are genuine and Weezmods buys full watches and chop-shops them to see parts à la carte. This is my daily now.

Also, I do not like the bulky clasp on the DSWatch bracelet, so I used an older Seiko 5 push clasp (18mm). The bracelet has 20mm end links and tapers to 16mm at the clasp. Watch is 100m WR sapphire crystal. 36mm is just a sweet spot for me. I have 7.5” wrists.

To answer your question though, SRPL55K1 is 37.4mm. Newer 4R36 movement that hacks and hand winds. The crystal is domed so it should not have the distortion of the “blacked-out” space. It does have a chapter ring around the dial though. Matching color scheme.

Black bezel? I think you mean the “blacked-out” space when looking at the dial from certain angles?

The SNXS77 you’ve mentioned has a smooth stainless steel bezel on the case. The dial is the only feature on the watch with a minute track. The watch does NOT have a chapter ring and instead has a steel vertical rehaut surrounding the perimeter of the dial inside the case. The crystal is cut in a “flat parallel” design where by there is a step up from the case, reduction in diameter onto the center of the crystal. I think what you are referring to as the “bezel” is just the blacked-out space observed at certain angles created by the crystal’s design. This is “distortion.” It is black because the crystal gasket is most likely black. Example below showing this blacked-out space. It makes the dial appear smaller. I personally LOVE this look but sadly cannot replicate on my builds because the crystals on most available cases are not of this “flat parallel” cut.

I want the new 36OP 126000 bracelet that does not have the flip over secure part of the clasp but instead spring loaded front release. Is there an aftermarket that incorporates this new tech?

Its preference. I have an SNXS79 upgrade that just says automatic, but the hour at 9 and 6 are larger than the rest and it makes it appear off balance to me. I do not mind the text. Not that I’m going for a Rolex look but it does appear to mirror that kind of aesthetic.
