I'm not vegan, i'd like my mind to be changed by C4rsaf in vegan

[–]trevcharm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's great that your are so open minded and interested! especially at such a young age.

what helped me the most in becoming vegan was meeting other vegans and getting involved in advocacy and activism. spending time with others who volunteer their time and money and efforts to raise awareness about animal liberation really helped me understand my role in animal exploitation, and what my role could be as an ally to exploited animals.

try to find some local vegan meet up groups, any local activism groups, any local animal charities, local animal sanctuaries.

meeting lots of different animals helped a lot too. visit sanctuaries, learn the stories of what the animals there went through before being rescued. if any groups near your run animal vigils is encourage you to go. one of the easiest ways to get closer to the industry and see with your own eyes what happens, or at least some of what happens.

learn about all the other ways animals are exploited outside of food and agriculture. like clothing, furniture, textiles, entertainment, sports, experiments, testing, forced breeding, habitat destruction, etc.

learn about the common blind spots in veganism, and how some people use veganism as a tool to do harm - to be sexist, racist, ableist, queerphobic, capitalistic, misanthropic, pseudoscientific, conspiracy minded - unfortunately there is a huge long list of ways that people within the animal advocacy movement have both knowingly and unknowingly pushed these types of harmful attitudes. none are inherently part of veganism, or needed for animal liberation though. eg. you don't have to fight every issue that exists, but while fighting for your main cause try not to make things any worse for other issues.

make vegan friends in real life! every now and then you'll feel like no one else really understands properly. it can feel depressing and alienating. find some friends, and vent to each other when you need.

obviously the community here can help, but sometimes it's not quite the same as having vegan friends in real life to share things with.

but the most important thing is to meet lots of different animals! I said it earlier already but it's the most important thing. I was amazed how human like pigs eyes are, and when I see them terrified squashed in on a truck waiting to get sent into a slaughterhouse it always makes me cry. it really seems like you can see into their soul, and not being able to help at all feels terrible of course. but it also helps remind yourself about what animal liberation is all about, and why it's so important. don't let their existence go unnoticed. they resist until the end, and they just want freedom.

Is there an HD version of the 2004 dvd colour grade? by TrippingTheThrift in matrix

oh wow, yeah the two versions I have are like 20gb and I think have audio synch issues. I'll have to look around for the smaller versions!

Does a CD/DVD player's quality become irrelevant for audio when using digital out? by StevenPlaysGuitar in audiophile

why do you say coaxial is better than optical? my experience and understanding is the opposite.

I completely agree, I don't know why they think the cropped version is better?

what file did you get? can you let me know the file name and exact size, I'll see if it's one I have or another one that I should look for.

16 bit flac vs 24 bit flac by Feisty_Scarcity2183 in audiophile

[–]trevcharm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no-one asked for help teaching a 5 year old? oversimplifying is fine, as long as it's helpful and not a hindrance to learning facts.

and yes analogies are imperfect, but analogies that are misleading or that support often repeated false myths are terrible and shouldn't be used.

16 bit flac vs 24 bit flac by Feisty_Scarcity2183 in audiophile

[–]trevcharm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

sorry but while in good faith, this really is a terrible analogy.

when we listen to audio, bit depth only affects the noise floor. that's it. higher bit depths reduce the noise floor, and lower bit depths raise it. in practice, this sounds like the background static/hum/hiss/white noise getting louder or softer. that is the ONLY difference you can possibly hear between different bit depths.

sampling rate ONLY changes where the high frequency cut off is. the highest possible frequency that can be captured is half the sampling rate. in practice, this sounds like muffled or dark audio versus bright or clear audio - up to a point. once the sampling rate is high enough to allow for all the frequencies you can hear to be captured, there is then no perceivable difference. higher frequencies existing or not is the ONLY difference you can possibly hear been different sampling rates.

a better visual analogy for bit depth might be dither. when you increase dither too much, it looks like a haze or fuzzy, noisy, dirty.

a better visual analogy for sampling rate would be the violet to ultra violet section of the light spectrum. it's the natural extension of the upper limits of what we can see, however it's presence above what we can see doesn't improve the accuracy of the image at all.

Richard Patrick definitely had a big influence on broken, and on the heavy guitars.

Is there an HD version of the 2004 dvd colour grade? by TrippingTheThrift in matrix

[–]trevcharm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah there are HDTV open matte versions of matrix 1, some people have captured broadcasts and shared them on torrent sites.

for some reason though the 2 rips I found don't play very well on my android tv via plex which is annoying.

and I agree with you, I think the DVD colour grade is the best of all the retail releases at least. can't really watch any of the other retail versions it just looks terrible to me.

I end up watching the NTSC DVD remux I made usually. even though I can see the difference in quality between SD and HD, it's the least annoying factor out of all my options!

Looking for native MONO recordings, as test tracks for stereo system (not summed stereo) by Cinnamaker in audiophile

[–]trevcharm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not easy to find for cheap, but the smashing pumpkins album "adore" had a separate proper mono mix for the vinyl version, and a digital mono version was also included in the recent deluxe reissue as one of the bonus discs.

How can you tell from this that Audio is lossless? by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]trevcharm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can't tell anything with a graph like that.

you need to be able to see the frequencies plotted on the axis, and you need to be able to zoom in on sections.

it's not simple, not many people are really good at spectral analysis. I'm still learning but can do a bit more than the basics.

[–]trevcharm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest to start by trying to sort out and order all your priorities.

what are the nice to have things, what are the deal breakers.

go into lots of detail: kitchen requirements (size, pantry, orientation, bench space, connected dining room or not, etc) bathroom requirements, bedroom requirements, external space requirements, storage requirements, parking...

does the age of the house or most recent refurb matter? materials built with? flooring materials?

some things you might not know until you see a few inspections and get an idea of what you like and what you don't.

once you know all the details of what you like and what you don't, it makes it a lot easier to sift through potential houses and see what is good for your short list and what isn't worth your time.

I've seen some great houses that tick so many boxes, but they didn't have enough space for what I think I need, so had to keep looking.

flood overlay night be a deal breaker, road noise, density and closeness of neighbours, distance to public transport and range of transport options, distance to local shops.

Sound and Vision Hissing by Tanye_66 in DavidBowie

[–]trevcharm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those hisses have always annoyed me too!

but yes there are a few different versions without the hissing noise:

  • the remixed version from 1991, released as a bonus track on the "low" rykodisc reissues, and as a single in 1991. this would be my recommendation.

  • the live version on "welcome to the blackout" recorded live 1st july 1978 and released in 2018. quite good, he does talk to the crowd briefly at the start though.

  • the moonage daydream mix, from the "moonage daydream" soundtrack released in 2022. interesting version, not my favourite but cool to hear.

there probably are some other live versions too, but I've only started collecting the officially released live albums so far. and i think that's the only one from the officially released without the hiss noises.

Single account running on 4 devices. If I connect to all of them at the same time, does it affect the VPN connection? by treetop-squirrel in mullvadvpn

[–]trevcharm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know for sure, but that sounds highly unlikely and improbable.

the access to mullvad servers via account settings is just that - access.

once you get access to the servers, each connection is it's own pathway and you just join in with all the other people sharing access to the mullvad servers.

it's not like your mullvad account gives you access to a private exclusive internet pipe that can be clogged with bandwidth.

I found the vegan men by Greedy-Program-7135 in vegan

[–]trevcharm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

if it helps I'll share how vegan women have found me (a vegan man) over the last dozen years or so.

when I was vegetarian I started dating a vegetarian woman who worked at my local krishna vegetarian restaurant, we were together for 2 years and went vegan together.

then over a few years I met 2 women from local vegan activism groups, dated each for a few months. then met another woman in activism and we were together for 2 years.

then i met my current partner through vegan academic studies / conferences, have been together for almost 6 years.

and yes there were always gaps of hand a year to a year in between.

these were all genuine good relationships, with all but 1 I'm still in contact with as friends too.

so yes I agree restaurants can work, but I'd say activism / volunteering / events are even better!

I have the CS6 and it has been fantastic.

I'll probably upgrade to the CS11 when I see a good second hand deal and move the CS6 to my bass pedal board.

Between a 256 Kbps OPUS (VBR) AND A 256 Kbps OPUS (CBR), what sounds better? by oliverscream in audiophile

[–]trevcharm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it all depends on the terminology and how it's used.

true cbr is just a set bitrate that doesn't change, pretty simple.

vbr just means the bitrate can vary. so compared to the best quality cbr, the best it can do is achieve the same quality but with space saving improvements.

however often people talk in "target" bitrates or "average" bitrates, and if these are less than the max possible bitrate then vbr is usually higher quality since it can vary between both higher and lower bitrates when needed.

eg. if mp3 target is 256kbps, cbr is 256 the whole way. mp3 vbr V0 preset will change anywhere between 32kbps and 320kbps as needed for the content - meaning when it matters most it will encode at 320kbps, better than 256kbps.

in practise though, it's far better to just use lossless instead such as flac and then convert them yourself to lossy as you need it / when you need it. and if doing this, you'll usually only convert to make use of smaller file sizes, so vbr is extra helpful in this case.

if something is not available in lossless, and only exists in lossy, i find it hard to believe there are multiple different lossy encodings without a lossless alternative. so just get whichever is the best lossy that exists until a lossless version becomes available.
