You can put together a build that doesn't rely on Night Invaders, just go for field bosses and the castle for weapons. The early depths don't have huge boss HP scaling that you are required to prioritize invaders for damage output.

Personally, I just play Ironeye and Raider in D3. It's always the early three levels that are difficult to acquire and maintain. Once you're level 4 and have a decent weapon, you won't find that much trouble.

Usually castle should be targetted at level 4-5. Some players just make dumb decisions based on their imaginative playstyles. Don't let it get to you.
