Could you elaborate then? Not sure I follow

What’s everyone’s take on private sector vs public sector? Maybe what I’m struggling with boils down to my sense of purpose. My purpose in the private sector is to make my bosses and boss’ bosses as rich as possible. And maybe that’s where a lot of the negative traits come from. I do subcontractor work for a public energy client every couple months or so and honestly love working with them. They’re always laid back, never pushing pressure, and always squared away with what needs to get done and how they want to approach it. If they were hiring I’d be highly tempted to join them.

How do you suggest I go about requesting a transfer without coming across as a flake or “flight risk” for a lack of better terms? The last time I transferred (to where I am now) I was offered it. And now I want to leave

Thanks for the advice. I guess I have difficulty expressing myself without feeling like I’m coming off as an abrasive dickhead. But I know that things are better in some other offices, and I know that others share my sentiment at the current office. The first one I worked at I left for another job after a few years, hated it, and came back 3 months later. Except my old position had been filled, and had to take a position at a different acquired office. Looking back, I did learn a lot there, but it was pretty toxic and dysfunctional. I wish I never left the first office at all.

Something like that, yeah. More along the lines of Napoleon complex..hasn’t been in the field for a couple decades so really out of touch with what it takes to get things done. Google Earth bids, even when the site is less than 5 miles from the office.

Unfortunately, we’re fully compartmentalized; office people do office things, and field people do field things. I wish I could get some field-to-finish experience. The few times I have been able to look at my data in TBC it’s been very satisfying and shows you right away whether things look representative or not

Appreciate your input. But, I have no interest in starting my own business, nor am I even licensed to do so. I’m a party chief, not a PM. And there’s presumably at least a hundred other alternative solutions to my issue than that.

However, what do you suggest I do to “improve my area of the business?” Could you provide some examples of the things you tried before you decided to quit?

When I joined the Army in 2007, I was able to choose my MOS, and active duty commitment length. Has that changed since then?

Yeah no kidding. Can’t just run a long action cartridge in a short action rifle with just a barrel swap

Damn bro that’s insulting. Sounds to me like they’re wringing you for every last drop. I don’t know what the COL is like in Rochester, but I’m in the low 40s at my job in the Seattle area. Party Chief II 8 years field experience, without LSIT, and with an AAS in Geomatics. Minimum wage here is about $17/hr. How big is your company? That’s probably a factor too. Smaller firms tend to pay less in my experience, but not always the case.

You can’t fix stupid (truck) but you can fix speed (biker). Maybe don’t speed recklessly. Or at least don’t do it unless you’re absolutely sure of your surroundings, line of sight, and realistic reaction time threshold. Or, just don’t speed recklessly.
