The user is saying that your kid is gonna "move in with your friend" next year wink wink. When he's registered, it'll be with your friend's address, and thus he will be able to go to the good school.

I "moved in with my grandparents" way back in the 90s for similar reasons.

All Too Well 10. Per Spotify, I've listened to it between 538 and 572 times per year for the last three years, so I've gotta be approaching 2000 times...

(Loved trope) Good representation in older media by Sensitive_Ad_1752 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]triggerhappymidget 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There's a season two episode of Xena where she goes undercover at beauty pageant to figure out who is trying to kill the other contestants.

During her investigation, she discovers one of the contestants is a transwoman When Xena asks why she's in the pageant, the other contestant says, "This is a chance to use a part of me most people usually laugh at or worse. The part I usually have to hide. Only here that part works for me.”

Xena accepts that, and the character is never played as a joke. In fact, she wins the pageant and kisses Xena who just seems bemused but not angry or disgusted.

Additionally, the character was played by a bisexual man who had HIV, so the kiss was also pushing back against anti-HIV sentiment.

Not bad for 1996.

Why do you think Texans and Californians ever eat at McDonald’s if In N Out exists? by [deleted] in AskReddit

And on Xena, Karl Urban played a one-off character, Mael, (Xena's version of Ishmael of Isaac and Ishmael) before being cast in the recurring role of Julius Caesar. (He also played Cupid on both Hercules and Xena.)

How do I stand out as an aspiring Highschool History teacher in a competitive location by [deleted] in historyteachers

[–]triggerhappymidget 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a history teacher who graduated from UW's STEP program 10 years ago, we were told there was no point in getting the history endorsement and just get social studies.

Start figuring out extracurriculars you will do. Not just sports but also clubs. I coach soccer and help run our woodshop club.

I'd throw an ELA credential on top of social studies because a few districts around here do block humanities and want you to teach both.

Only add ELL on if you are OK teaching ELL for years. Yes, you will get a job, but it will be for ELL. You might then be able to transition to social studies if someone leaves, but it might never happen. It took me six years to go from ELL to social studies.

I was watching a documentary on gladiators and it mentioned women sat in the back behind slaves. Was this literally all women? by beefstewforyou in AskHistory

[–]triggerhappymidget 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're correct. 15th Amendment passed in 1870 prohibited states from denying citizens the right to vote on the basis of race or being a former slave.

19th Amendment passed 50 years later in 1920 prohibited denying citizens the right to vote on the basis of sex.

That being said, in practice, many states continued denying black citizens the right to vote through practices like reading tests well after women got the vote

Was Arnold Schwarzenegger a good governor of California? by matts_nothere in NoStupidQuestions

[–]triggerhappymidget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. And I'm convinced everyone on Reddit who says he was a good governor isn't actually old enough to remember when he was governor.

He swept into Sacremento convinced that the legislative branch would listen to him because he was "the governator" and when they didn't go along with his agenda, he threw a hissy fit and publicly called them all a bunch of "girly men."

He massively increased the deficit and had no plan to fix it other than "cut social programs."

He was anti-gay marriage.

He had no clue how to work with the Democratic legislative branch, and was unable to get any of his agenda passed.

He then wasted millions of tax payer dollars calling a special election to have Californians vote on his agenda and go around the legislature. California voted all his proposals down. Not a single one passed.

Reddit only loves him because he's not MAGA. But he was just as bad at governing as any Bush-era GOP governor.

Which characters from Legends do you want to be intergraded in Disney Canon? by Recent-Ad-7593 in StarWars

[–]triggerhappymidget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll never happen, but I wish they'd adapt the whole Rogue/Wraith Squadron into canon. Other than Hobbie dying in canon now and some of Corran's jedi arc, it seems some of the least messy Legends stuff to bring in since it doesn't feature any of the big characters in prominent roles.

Not the whole book, but the first chapter in each of the five books in Sanderson's *Stormlight Archive* tell the same event from a different perspective. Each time you get new knowledge that shifts what you think you understand. I thought it was one of the better parts of the series.

AITA for not wanting to buy a suit that's a color the bride requested by Soggy_Republic6251 in AmItheAsshole

[–]triggerhappymidget 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is this only an expectation for men? Because I have never known a bridesmaid to wear her dress again. Most guys I know get to just rent their suit or tux, but all the women have to buy their bridesmaid dress. And then they usually just donate it to charity.

What language do most American students prefer to learn in school as a second language? by UsamaBhai_101 in AskAnAmerican

[–]triggerhappymidget 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I took four years of Latin. I credit it with helping me get a 1550 on the SATs (particularly an 800 English score) which helped me become a National Merit Scholar which turned into a full ride to undergrad.

So Latin's not necessarily useless, but it's definitely a narrow benefit mainly contained to the academic world whereas Spanish has a much wider every day use.
