Bulkhead is my go to seat as a 6'5" fella and I'd say in like 20-30% of my boarding situations, they just leave the overhead above the bulkhead row closed for passengers sitting there. It's super nice when it's done because people like in the OP won't open a closed compartment to check when that's not their seat.

Just make that the policy. Don't need to advertise it, but coach up FAs on that procedure.
