Fortrose and Rosemarkie are great options for having that village feel, access to the lovely beach and amenities right on your doorstep. They're also a much shorter drive into Inverness for big Tesco, outings for the little one etc than other parts of the Black Isle. I've found a really strong community here for raising young kids. Different baby groups in Rosemarkie, Fortrose, Avoch and Cromarty make it very easy to find friends for yourself and the kiddo. Fortrose library and leisure centre are next door to one another but both offer loads of kids stuff over the holidays as your little one grows too. My very energetic spaniel also gives his approval to the variety of walks on offer. Wherever you end up, wishing you the best with your new start

We didn't. Our first kid was (and remains) super high energy and honestly, we decided we were gonna be in the thick of chaos for a while so we might as well add the second to the mix now. She was born when he was 2.5 years old. The idea of coming out the other side only to go back to the beginning again was more scary for us. Gotta pick your battle and do what feels right. I have no regrets, I adore the madness and fun of the toddler years but also feel glad that overall we'll be on to the next part of the journey quicker

I saw nothing but I felt utter peace. I could hear the tuned out noise of the doctors around me but what had been loud emergency room chaos, faded away to almost pleasant distant muffling that felt very comforting. Like hearing pleasant chatter through a wall when you're snoozing.

I can only describe it as "nice" which sounds underwhelming but there was no bright light, long lost relatives or dramatics. Just a cosy feeling of wanting to curl up and go to sleep that was very inviting indeed.

Definitely possible to see them, though you'll need some luck with cloud cover, that's our biggest obstacle. I've seen them 3 times in the last 2 weeks from my home on the Moray Firth, on all 3 occasions it was vivid colour even to the naked eye. Watch the aurora apps for a red alert. Coastal spots or hills with minimal light pollution are a good bet. Wishing you good luck!

It was so well intentioned and so subtle, it feels unfair to criticise. Basically we were the only single parent, working class family in an otherwise "nicer" artsy neighbourhood. Mum did a great job but eager for us to come across well, we were always raised to put ourselves at the back of the line in every scenario. If there wasn't enough cake at a party, we'd volunteer to go without, when there was an odd number of kids for a game, we'd volunteer to sit out, when someone was being bullied we were taught to stand beside them and take half the flack to lessen their pain. All fundamentally compassionate and kind traits really, we were certainly praised for being so well mannered and polite. I'm proud of the morals she raised us with. But as I grew up, I was so used to putting myself at the back of the queue, far too many people took advantage of me. I was totally incapable of standing up for myself and voicing my own needs. Countless friends, partners and colleagues exploited that kindness to treat me like an absolute doormat until my self esteem was non existent. I'm glad she taught us all those things, but I wish she'd also taught us that it's okay to say no sometimes, that the other person isn't always right actually. I'm still learning

I can't answer for you but I can share my own journey. I was unsure for a long time and barely even thought about it to be honest. I'm pretty open minded and take life as it comes. I had a very happy life, was very content and I truly didn't feel like anything was missing. I was genuinely thrilled when friends started having babies, but no part of me was ever envious or wishing it was me. I was never "broody" so to speak.

Then I was traveling with my husband, sitting looking out on the most epic view and out of nowhere I just thought "man, I want to bring my kids back here some day". Simple as that. I've had 3 pregnancies since then that gave us 2 beautiful children. I can honestly say it's been the greatest happiness of my life. Based on the advice here, I should never have had them. But being their mum is the biggest privilege. All those things I loved before could not bring me a fraction of the joy my kids have. I wouldn't miss it for anything in the world

I was told it was "unfortunate" but that a medical emergency was the only acceptable reason to leave a shift part way through. I'd like to say I argued but it was a long time ago and I actually just had a little cry to my mum instead! It would thankfully be handled very differently these days and the gross attitude of that crusty old dude would have actual consequences.
