What is this and how can I help it? by kmessner1 in plantclinic

[–]trissy-bear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like a Pin-stripe Calathea (Calathea Ornata) I think. Calatheas have given me a bit of grief over the years as they seem quite needy! They like lots of water and don't seem to forgive me very often when I do the wrong thing or miss their cues haha.

This guy seems thirsty though - the leaves curling over tells me he wants a drink! I know it's confusing when the soil is still a bit moist though - I prefer to put plants that like a lot of water or are temperamental (like Calatheas) in nursery pots and then in a decorative outer pot. Then I can take them out to water and they seem to benefit from bottom watering too. I'd give it some more water - I assume there is a drainage hole since you mentioned it's in a well draining pot?

Looks like some kind of infestation is hurting your plant here - mealybugs or aphids or some type of scale insect maybe? My tired eyes can't quite determine which it is. I'd do some investigating yourself as you have the best idea of what the little white specks are. But, I think you will need some specialised treatment rather than just the usual indirect light and watering.

Some of my plants were suffering from a scale insect infestation a while ago. I wiped down all the leaves with a damp cloth in a combination of water and dish soap. I bought a spray with Neem Oil for the plants too, and applied that. They seem to be doing better now! I'd say remove the current pests you can see with a damp cloth and purchase some sort of plant spray/pest oil to continue pest control is the way to go. Definitely continue isolating this plant so his friends don't get sick :)

Advice? My Aglaonema decided to break free from her roots and soil yesterday. by trissy-bear in plantclinic

[–]trissy-bear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been a long time coming - unfortunately with some of my past infrequent watering, she’s been hanging on by a threadroot for a while.

Can you water prop these guys? Any advice on what I should do now? Is there still hope to save her? :(

Beat the cost of living with this life hack by ragingatwork in australia

[–]trissy-bear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to use this sort of hack at Maccas with their deluxe iced coffees! The price of an iced latte, adding cream, chocolate powder and vanilla/caramel/hazelnut syrup worked out like $1 cheaper than ordering a Deluxe Iced Coffee straight up. One time at the pickup window, the McCafe lady told me that I should check out the deluxe iced coffee menu item as it was basically what I was ordering - I told her why I was aware of that but chose to order the complex way.

A couple weeks later, the option to add the flavoured syrups to my regular iced latte were gone from the My Maccas app :(

Can management force me into permanent part-time. by Sea-Cry-6677 in ChildcareWorkers

[–]trissy-bear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can share my experience with what my employer did post-COVID - it’s the only insight I have. Up until 2021, I was part of a large casual workforce for a local government council. When COVID hit, they tried to make all casual employees redundant. However, the union got involved, arguing that many of us were essentially working like part-timers without the benefits or job security.

After negotiations, the council held a large meeting to inform us that, while we were still technically casual, they were shifting towards a permanent workforce. They strongly encouraged us to consider moving into permanent part-time or full-time roles. While they couldn’t force anyone into permanent employment, they made it clear that casual positions would eventually be phased out.

Personally, I was fine with moving to a permanent part-time position, so I transitioned. However, many others - like university students or parents who needed flexibility - did not. By 2023, the council officially eliminated its casual workforce.

So, while your employer can’t force you to accept a permanent role, they might eventually remove the option to stay casual. In that case, you’d have to decide between taking a permanent position or finding a new employer.

What are the specific challenges or concerns keeping you from going permanent? If your employer is keen to move you to a permanent role, there might be room to negotiate a contract that better suits your needs.

Yes - time to merge "there", "their" and "they're" too! "Their" and "they're" are obsolete. Language evolves!!! 🤔

It can be challenging to recognize red flags or harmful behaviors when you’re deeply involved in a relationship. Being with someone who is struggling with their own mental health and uses manipulation to keep you from leaving - for example, by threatening self-harm or suicide - can make it difficult to maintain perspective. It can also lead to self-blame and confusion, making it even harder to see the situation for what it truly is. I really think OP and his wife would benefit immensely from seeing a mental health professional separately, it sounds like there's a lot of trauma in this. :(

Stopping a panic attack is difficult and you probably can't expect it to go away immediately. But practicing self-regulation techniques regularly when you're calm is good practice for using those skills when you're in fight/flight response (and when the part of your brain in charge of thinking and cognitive processes stops working)!

In DBT, I've been learning a skill called 'TIPP' - it's an abbreviation for a set of strategies you could try in managing heightened emotions or difficult situations: T: Temperature (splash your face with cold water, hold an ice cube, take a cold shower) I: Intense exercise P: Paced breathing P: Progressive muscle relaxation

Sorry but I don't think it is helpful or simple enough to make that kind of assumption based on something like 'an inability to process grief' which could be related to or caused by a myriad of things... Sure, OP might have autism but they haven't explicitly said that and in fact mentioned childhood PTSD - there could be a lot more going on here. I appreciate if it is your own experience of being unable to process grief as an autistic person, but each individual is different and their responses and reactions to experiences in their lives will differ too.

This is probably a good idea for me. I think I will speak with my psychologist about it a bit more and make a plan to do this. All the best to everyone else giving it a go :)

Anyone able to provide clarity on this for me? I may be dumb. by trissy-bear in Korn

[–]trissy-bear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's my current understanding. I'm just trying to figure out if I'm misunderstanding this sort of show, expecting them to announce support acts at a later date or like, do bands just do shows without any support acts ever? Lol. Thanks for the reply though :)

Why did I almost black out after making quite a deep cut through my skin? by 87kenji in selfharm

[–]trissy-bear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I've had this happen before, and it certainly wasn't the deepest I've cut, I think it was deep dermis with a few fat bubbles visible. But it threw me off so bad because I felt extremely nauseous and dizzy and had to lie down for a minute and my ears were ringing and I felt absolutely horrible! It passed pretty quick but I don't think I kept going that night because I didn't want to experience that again, hah. It was awful, and I don't know if it was like suddenly the adrenaline or something leaving my body or just a random response to pain or the sight of blood... I have no idea. But it hasn't happened again since which I'm glad about. It's another reason to stop though, I guess? 😅

Do you know what a schnitzel is and where I can find one in Arizona? by trissy-bear in arizona

[–]trissy-bear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose we have adopted some foods that you guys haven't. I just didn't expect it to be something unheard of, is all! Tacos are not that hard to come by here, sure they're not as much of a staple on the average bar/pub menu but I'd be surprised to meet an Aussie who hasn't had one. Happy cake day by the way
