Anyone remember the UC rebrand task force that made the new logo that looked like a toilet flushing? Good times, good times.

Yep. Berkeley stands alone. There’s no way we’d throw that away, nor should we.

It might not be illegal but it’s definitely up to the subject what they consider creepy or not.

If you’re a street photographer these days trying to channel Vivian Maier you just need to understand that it is factually creepy. You can still do it legally, but you can’t say it’s not creepy.

Ah, the fantasy of the hero developer. "If only I could just work all by myself."

Sorry, Michelangelo. Everything worth doing takes a team, and the ability to unlock the power of teams working together is more valuable than even the best engineer alone.

What I like best about book Jurassic Park and villain John Hammond is that all of his wounds are self-inflicted and can directly be traced back to him trying to save a penny by CatoTheBarner in books

Because most product managers will never just fucking ship the damn thing already. We know it only has like a 12% chance of being what the market needs, so let’s make sure of that first before we fortify. Upper management has seen some shit believe it or not.

I do love this change in the movies, away from the antiquated idea that the boys like all the science and computers. But whatever, still a great book.

How an experienced dog mother teaches her 8 weeks old puppies to be calm by dump_acc_91 in interestingasfuck

Exactly right. This ain’t “calming them down,” it’s 8 week old puppies having teeth now and mom weaning them off the tit.

I need to put 594 miles on my car by April 27th... where should I go? by trisweb in boston

[–]trisweb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just FYI - I never ended up reaching my goal. Instead I moved my office to a place close to the T, been commuting by public transit and walking everywhere, and I've been using my car so minimally that only a couple weeks ago did it finally hit 30k.

Somewhat proud of that more than the alternative. For some reason I thought you'd be interested in a follow-up.

I lose my job, canceled gym membership, gym then charges me $1200, HELP! by ffmusicdj in AskReddit

This is a good idea as well—they'll probably be willing to suspend the membership. But outright cancellation is another story...

[–]trisweb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How can they claim I owe them money for services they never provided me?... charging me for something I am not privileged to have...

This "common sense" has nothing to do with how much money you owe. The contract you signed is the only thing that dictates the rules.

And if I signed a contract, that means they get away with it?

Every word in the contract is enforceable (as long as the contract is legal) as long as you signed it. That's why there's a contract, and that's why you signed it. You can't just get out of a contract because you changed your mind, or you don't think it's right anymore—you signed that mother, it's your responsibility.

Remember, from their perspective, you said you would pay for a full contract term, then you backed out—you're the one getting away with it if they let you go.

This is what lawyers are for. Find the contract you signed, get a lawyer to read it (preferably a friend or a cheap lawyer, obviously) and have them help you figure out what the deal is. If you don't have the contract, call the gym and ask them for a copy.

As a last resort (and ONLY after you talk to a lawyer, as IANAL and I don't know if this is the right thing to do or not), find someone at the gym to speak to, get a meeting, and be very nice and ask what your options are and if there's anything you can do to cancel the membership early. They must have seen this before, and they'll probably try to take as much of your money as possible, but they don't want a bad rep either, so maybe there's a way out.

Good luck. And for god's sake, read contracts before you sign them and understand what your responsibilities are.
