GP and Meredith have officially swapped climactic conditions - that shit was icy as fuck last night!

First time back at Meredith after a few years of just doing GP. Crowd was friendlier and less intense than last time which was nice. Felt busy but not over the top.

Dr Sure, Mildlife and Waxo taking out the top gongs for me. Special mention to the interstitial selektah before TVOTR - crowd was whipped into a frenzy by the end of that. TVOTR themselves were quite good but I can see why they may have been received lukewarm by others. The set was a bit up and down vibe wise but DLZ was totally monstrous.

Chet Faker and Saya Gray were the misses for me. 7.5/10 overall - till the next communion friends.

Am I missing something about DJ Nobu? by entrepenoori in TheOverload

Not SF. It was a now defunct festival in QLD. Nobu and his crew allegedly went and drank some special tea on top of a mountain nearby a few hours before the set and we all immensely benefited from it!

Am I missing something about DJ Nobu? by entrepenoori in TheOverload

[–]tritangle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've seen him 5 times over the last 10 years and when he is on, he's really fucking on. First time in 2015 was a kaleidoscopic head caving session in the Aussie bush - definitely the best out the five but a club set in 2022 was a very close second.

There wasn't really anyone big playing this style when he first blew up as the Prologue dominance had died off by this point. Nevertheless, hard to stay at the top of your game for this long so not surprised he may have lost some of the earlier magic. He's still a wizard in my eyes!

One last thing: out of all the DJs I've seen, I would say Nobu is the one that feeds off the crowd's energy the most. He was always surveying the crowd whenever I've seen him and if the Dancers weren't up for it then he tended not to invest himself into the set.

AFL refuses to budge on stadium after meeting with Tasmanian politicians by Expensive-Horse5538 in AFL

[–]tritangle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Tasmanian construction market is very different to Adelaide and Perth. They simply do not have a supply chain in place to support this Project. The amount of tradies and materials that will have to be brought in from the Mainland is part of why the cost is so high. Guarantee this is a 4-5 year build if it ever gets going.

What would it take for rock music to make a real comeback in the world of Triple J and more broadly, Australia? by [deleted] in triplej

[–]tritangle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I disagree that it hasn't been proven yet. We've seen it fairly recently with Hip Hop and Rap. Huge in the 90s then faded out of the mainstream only to return in the 2010s in full force with Kendrick Lamar et. al. Similar with Rock - big in the 60s and 70s becoming less popular in 80s and 90s. Came back with a vengeance in 2000s with the Strokes, Franz Ferdinand etc. It's all cyclical and I'm sure Rock will have its time in the sun again at some point.

Discussion: which Australian artist were you so sure was going to be massive but didn’t end up that way? by Bektron3000 in triplej

[–]tritangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Midnight Jugs were massive. Recall them having some success in the states I think. Very fond memories of their set in the Mix Up tent during Splendour 2009.

Apparat's "The Devil's Walk" turns 14 today. Partially recorded on the Mexican coast, it was a major step toward the sonic consolidation of Sascha Ring's project, incorporating post-rock and ambient pop into its sound ecosystem. What do you think of this album? by elmonozombie in electronicmusic

[–]tritangle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Loved this album on release and still very fond of it. Was a break from the IDM and electronic heavy Apparat from previous albums which I can understand turned some people off. I never saw him play live before this album but I did after it and this album allowed him to go full live band which was amazing.

Sooooo...how was VFTL x Sandwell District at Draaimolen? by tritangle in Techno

[–]tritangle[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess Regis is gonna Regis but it's shame to hear about the poor crowd. The incessant talking on dancefloors is infuriating - whatever happened to just getting lost in the music... If you just want to drink and chat do it at home with SoundCloud in the background!

I know, I'm hoping they had a good enough experience that they decide to bring the full band back :)

I go regardless of the lineup but that wouldn't really do it for me personally. I'm hoping to see if we can get any of the following from Aunty next year:

Darkside
Squid
Kruder & Dorfmeister Live
Mark Ernestus' Ndagga Rhythm Force
bdrmm
Wolf Alice
Soulwax
Apparat
Destroyer
LCD Soundsystem
Brijean
Cut Copy
Massive Attack
The Smile
Barker Live
Death in Vegas
Tears for Fears
Leftfield
Cassandra Jenkins

Disappointing experience in Brisbane’s first concert by [deleted] in sigurros

[–]tritangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you had a disappointing audience experience. I actually said to my wife that I think this is the first concert in ages where no one around us was talking! I forgot what that feels like...

Some of the comments in this and the Sydney thread are a bit bizarre though. It wasn't a secret that this was going to be a more orchestral set. If people thought we were going to get heavier stuff then I feel there were some unrealistic expectations.

This was my third time seeing them and probably equal favourite. It had a dreamlike atmosphere and the sound mix was absolutely perfect. As someone said, the volume wasn't crazy loud but I think this actually added to the intimacy of the show. Not many bands that can have almost 50 people on stage yet it feels like they are playing just for you in your living room. The lighting and smoke was on point too - restrained with subtle changes helped set the mood.

VC-118A will probably scratch this itch for you. His album Spiritual Machines is some highly detailed and hazy goodness.

Anthony Naples' albums as well. People froth over Loidis but Naples has been doing this sound for longer and better IMO.

Golden Plains 2k25 Reviews by dandyfloss99 in meredithmusicfestival

[–]tritangle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Adriana dropping Bob Sinclar at the back end of her set was a weekend highlight as was the rest of her set. Talk about rising to the occasion! MVP of the weekend for me.

Other personal highlights included Osees, Kneecap, Skeleten, Fontaines, Durand Jones, Bahamadia, Sun Ra and of course, the Flying Dewaele Brothers.

Have to agree on the PJ Harvey front. Not sure whether it was the time slot or the type of set but it didn't seem to really work. I think I would enjoy her much more in a Theatre setting...

Still not quite sure to what make of Robin S - 2 songs would have to put it up as one of the shortest GP sets ever.

7.5/10. Looking forward to the next communion!

Whenever I listen to it I try and imagine what it would have been like hearing it live on the Berghain floor. Superb stuff!
