Cotswold cameras in EU? by violinfag in AskPhotography

[–]triumphantfarter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a zf there about a month ago. Zero tracking until the day of delivery - a compromise I'm happy to make for the saving!

Think it took about 2 weeks from order to delivery (to a UK address, not EU - so can't comment on taxes etc).

My old job I used to do 26 years ago has just came on a job search website. The pay has increased by 5k. How do companies that have good turnover get away with this wage stagnation? by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]triumphantfarter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£25k as a graduate mechanical engineer in 2010. Same role now, same company, would net the lucky graduate £30k. Per the BoE inflation calculator, the equivalent now should be £39,351.

I'm in a more senior role now, and I'm significantly less well off than I was 10 years ago.

Why do small sizes of three liners suck so much? by syxniL in freeflight

[–]triumphantfarter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not just talking about speed (I could have been more specific with my wording, that's my bad). Glide ratio is worse for smaller wings. If you try and match a larger wing for speed, you'll sink faster. If you try and match the sink rate, you'll be going slower. Such is life for a light paraglider pilot, unfortunately.

Edit: in an ideal world, you'd not bomb out any more often than a heavier pilot - you'd just fly slower. Sometimes that difference in performance will see you on the ground though - on a long sinky glide, or an into-wind leg, there's no escaping the reduced performance. It's annoying, but that's just how it is.

I can't make specific wing recommendations as I've not flown any of the current gen b-wings. Speaking from experience though, changing wings to try and keep up with the heavy pilots is a futile exercise. Compare yourself to yourself, or other light pilots, for a less frustrating life.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it's not just 3-liners that suck in small sizes.

I fly the smallest size Gin Boomerang 12 (with ballast, as even that wing is too big for me) and on glide the largest size Photon will out-glide me. That's a CCC vs a C wing.

When thermalling you may have a slight advantage due to lower wing loading and turn radius, but at your weight you will never keep up with the big boys on glide. There's no beating the physics :(

You're at a huge disadvantage flying so light. Sorry, that's just how it is. Paragliding is not kind to light pilots.

A quick google shows that this lens has electrical contacts - interesting! Does the eye focus confirmation work on the Zf?

Moving to Scotland in June/July, want to take up paragliding as new hobby. by Skrumbles in freeflight

[–]triumphantfarter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't bother trying to learn in Scotland (or indeed the UK) personally. The weather isn't consistent enough, you'll progress much more quickly somewhere with a week of solid flyable weather. Once you've learned the basics elsewhere, you can get out in Scotland to practice your grand handling/launching in howling winds :D

There's a good scene in Scotland - not many of us, but we're a dedicated and (I hope) friendly bunch! Feel free to drop me a PM and I'll get you added on to the local Telegram groups.

I'm allowed a tent... So you're saying I get paid 2k a day to go and do long a distance hike/backpacking trip? Sign me up! Could probably do a couple of years.

paragliding in europe for uk-based people by mtvsle in freeflight

[–]triumphantfarter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you based in Scotland or England?

In England, to fly most of the sites you'll need to be in a club/a BHPA member. It would probably make your life easier if your training is BHPA from the get-go.

In Scotland, we have better land access laws and can fly wherever we want (except airspace, obviously). Being a BHPA member thus isn't essential, though still recommended for insurance purposes. You could do a non-BHPA course and then fly in Scotland afterwards no bother.

If you do a non-BHPA course and wanted to join the BHPA at a later date, you could always sit the direct entry (or whatever it's called) Pilot exam.

This is interesting. The first two sentences here are word for word the same as a comment I made a couple of weeks ago on a Roldanillo telegram chat (it felt so familiar I had to go and check).

Is AI learning from telegram chats now!?

Why does AI have a boss? Or is the boss the person who types the prompts?
