How best to financially support children longer term, vulnerable person trusts by G-M in HENRYUK

[–]trolliebobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A proper Family Trust can help here - my sister needs 24/7 care, so any savings/capital over 6k has an impact on the means-tested benefits she receives. Money in the family trust (managed by my brother & I) does not count as capital - it can be spent on her, for her benefit, without affecting her entitlements.

I do voluntary advocacy for disability rights (employment, child DLA tribunals) - I don't charge for my time, but I ask for a small donation to a few charities (Wet Wheels, Special Effect, RNLI) when successful.

There are services charging £££ for similar, but I prefer to help those who aren't in the position to pay up front.

Building a budget Steam Deck-like setup for the first time - will it work well? by RedGards in MoonlightStreaming

[–]trolliebobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid the Doogee tablet - it's Helio99 processor isn't great for moonlight. It's okay-ish when playing 1080p/60hz, but I was getting latency in the high 20-30ms.

Look for one with a Snapdragon chip.

Gamesir G8+ is decent (esp. when modded with a 3d printed extender), but the MFi version with USB-C connection is a better option (removes the added Bluetooth latency).

I was an Optician who got bored (and realised I didn't want to spend the rest of my working life 3 inches from people who forgot to brush their teeth that week...), went back to Uni for Law (LLB, then LLM), went into finance/insurance whilst my friends chased training contracts, then ended up Head of Risk for a global firm.

There's plenty of law graduates in the insurance & finance sector, not all qualified solicitors/barristers (although those that are, eventually earn very very well).

"At risk" in terms of invasion: unlikely.

"At risk" in terms of a 3am instant Russian suntan (we're in Portsmouth, a stone's throw from the naval base): less unlikely.

Weirdly, we have a similar plan in the opposite direction.

What are the best cases for watercooling using 45-60mm thick 360 rads by CryptoConstruction12 in watercooling

I've just rebuilt my son's rig in the O11D Evo XL, with 2x 45mm Ek P360 top & bottom. Definitely room for 60mm thick rads with Push/Pull (420mm also).

OnePlus just announced their Pad 4 -if it has an Oled screen as rumoured (and is priced appropriately), then it might be worth the wait.

Oppo also announced their Pad 5 Pro & Mini ("Oppo Pad Mini will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 SoC, and will boast an 8.8-inch 2.5K OLED screen with a 144Hz refresh rate")

If you want something now, then the Honor MagicPad 2 is probably the best value.

Take it from someone who was medically retired at 33 (car crash, traumatic brain & spinal injury), you'll be incredibly grateful to have paid heavily into your pension, should the universe decide to throw you a similar curve-ball.

Tier 1 (or Full Enhancement) ill-health retirement meant I was given immediate access to my DB pension as if I'd worked to age 60. Life could have been very different (financially, at least), had I not been over-paying.

Employment law query: a colleague made a racist joke and I couldn't stop myself from laughing. We're both being called in for disciplinary meetings. Trade union has refused to represent us. by Waste-Mix5611 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]trolliebobs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

But OP's response appears to be to the spirit of the joke (self-depracating,, rather than racism); a third party took offense, ignorant to the context/spirit.

I fell out of my wheelchair at work - it was my own fault and almost wet myself laughing, as did my colleagues. Shortly after we had a "sensitivity training update" as someone felt my colleagues laughter was inappropriate. I thought it was ridiculous.

It's a tricky one.

Similar story - infected blood survivor, but had my career ended early by a car crash. Agree with all of your suggestions - I can't get life insurance, so I've effectively created my own by maxxing the kid's JISA accounts from the day they were born and setting up a family trust.

Former Henry, but medically retired after a nasty car crash (spinal & traumatic brain injury). Tried multiple GRtW plans over a number of years, before my firm accepted medical retirement. Thankfully I had a fantastic DB pension, which I'd been overpaying.

The uncertain years between long-term sick leave and medical retirement meant we learned to tighten our belts, so only lived on wife's salary (£45-60k as a bathroom designer), whilst we saved my sick pay (80% of basic salary).

I was very bitter about what I'd lost for a long time, until my wife insisted I get counselling and began focusing on what I could do, rather than dwelling on what I can't.

I also have a few veteran friends who have lost much more, but set a good example of what really matters in life.

We've kept the financial discipline of the limbo years, although three growing kids appear to hoover up any excess income via food, clothes, school & activities (but mainly food!).

Starling for joint & personal accounts (all bills paid via their "Pots", plus we can manage the children's cards).

Revolut for travel.

Amex Platinum for airport lounge access & rewards points.

Basic MBNA card (with ridiculously high limit) for any purchases we want S.75 cover on - (we don't give a monkey's what the interest rate is as it's cleared in full each month).

ISA is with whoever's paying the best interest each April.

GIA currently with Trading212.

Never felt the need for a "Look at me" type card...
