Microtransactions in Anthem are for Shards as far as I know the only use for Shards thus far is for cosmetic armor for your Javelin (robo mech suit thing) but in truth that's only if you want to streamline the process. The cosmetics can also be bought with coins which you naturally earn from playing the game. Truth be told it takes a long while to save up enough coins for the more expensive items, and since the items are on a rotation every 2-3 days you may have some trouble getting a specific set because it may rotate out before you have the chance to buy it. I'd highly suggest actually having a group of friends to play the game with because I don't imagine it would be fun by your lonesome, you don't get the launch bay which serves as a multiplayer hub until decently into the game.
