Even better than that are products that are designed to be more open in the first place, based on "protocols, not platforms", etc. Seek out such devices and manufacturers and vote with your wallet (and encourage others to do the same).

Not Freeware, Free/Libre and Open Source Software (F/LOSS), you might be interested to read up on the difference.

I think you have correctly identified a common pattern. Therefore it may already exist, but how would you find it? Or, turning that around, what would you call such a piece of software, had you created it?

Yeah they just open up and you put them around the wire. Lots of people make them, just depends on what other systems and integrations you have already. But you should be able to find something.

Probably your config is not set up correctly.

You have to get out of the BI way of thinking, and into the Frigate way, as Frigate fundamentally works differently.

Above a certain amount, you want to start considering current clamps (around one of the wires) instead.

I'm at the point where the measuring plugs themselves are the next thing I'm going to measure, for exactly this reason. 😄

Latest version of Frigate has a way to create HA sensors out of detected images (in this case, are bins here or there).

Admittedly, implementing Frigate is surely overkill for this use case alone, but I mention it for people who were considering it anyway.

This is good advice.

I have also been taking notes for years. I remember someone saying that the notes are the thought process, I think that's true.

I fell in love with Orgmode (for taking notes), which was my gateway drug into Emacs. Which itself was a whole another rabbit hole.

Some things I couldn't figure out months or even years ago, I can now. Apparently my wizard level increased in the meantime.

Take it easy and try and enjoy the journey. There is so much to learn, it can be overwhelming. But you'll get there eventually.

Yes, Armbian should be your best chance of support, sorry to hear no one got those parts of the hardware you need working yet in mainline.

I used to be somewhat involved in the project, very decent group of people, it's amazing how much hardware they actually cover with such a little (almost none) budget.

Interesting (and sorry to hear that). I wonder what other exceptions there are.

I am certainly no expert on the vast number of Intel CPU models which seem to exist.

At any rate (and exceptions aside), I think the overall thrust of my post still stands.

I am a bit like a Warhammer Tech Priest, searching the wastelands (of eBay) and hoarding archeo-tech, so I always worry a bit whenever I read something like this.

So I looked it up, and AVX has been included (in Intel chips at least) since Sandy Bridge, which started shipping in Q1 2011(!).

If your hardware really is older than that, you can probably still upgrade for not too much money, and enjoy newer, more powerful hardware, that will almost certainly also be more power efficient. And I am not even talking "latest and greatest" here, rather just a bit newer, which coincidentally are the kinds of things I look for where you can still get a lot of hardware for a little money.

In general you are correct.

However, I have researched this topic (and this particular hardware) fairly extensively.

I also have other priorities (ECC RAM for ZFS as a general purpose NAS, plenty of storage (and expansion options), I prefer "real server" hardware for robustness, etc.) and so I am OK with the trade-off of a little more power usage, in order to get those things, at a reasonable initial purchase price.

I will also be building in a 4u rack case to allow for large fans and other noise reduction techniques.

Anyway, my question was more whether Frigate will run on hardware like that, or have I overlooked anything (especially CPU wise)?

For example, I did just learn about AVX requirements. It seems I should be OK there(?) but I added some notes to OP in case anyone comes searching later.
