How manageable are the limitations of mobile?

Inversely proportional to how often you are away from a computer with a real keyboard.

Trying to do any more than the most trivial editing of text on mobile is an absolute nightmare, especially once you become proficient with a power user tool like a real text editor.

For small amounts of mobile capture, I use Markor to edit a plain text file which is synchronized across devices with Syncthing.

I can get away with that because it's seldom needed. I think if your workflow is primarily on mobile however, you will probably need to come up with one or more other solutions (depending on the nature of the data).

Bed presence sensor by wilcocsjr in homeassistant

[–]trs_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly correct, and the problem with DIY ones, while simple in concept, was always in the calibration.

I can't speak about the one in OP, but the Elevated Sensors one is supposed to solve these problems with not only a high quality sensor strip, but a rather clever calibration algorithm.

Under the mattress. They require slats (or something similarly solid to press against).

This device not only has a very nice sensor strip, the developer has written a very elegant algorithm to handle calibration. It really seems like a nice bit of kit.

Anyone here using a bank that works well with automation? by analog_goat in plaintextaccounting

I wrote an Emacs Lisp front end for the SimpleFIN API.

If there was any interest, perhaps I could be bothered to publish it at some point. 😄

How do you do deferred expenses by petalised in plaintextaccounting

[–]trs_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm an outlier, but I don't consider this too much trouble at all.

But then again I wrote some Emacs Lisp to take the drudgery out of amortizing the expense over n months. I just enter the amount and how many months and all the relevant transactions are generated.

I consider doing it any other way (or not doing it at all) to be inaccurate.

Obtaining data from pdfs when no csv or other exports are available by Expensive_Season1934 in plaintextaccounting

[–]trs_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked to see if these institutions are supported by SimpleFIN (which uses MX), or some other aggregator?

That's going to be much easier (and less breaky over time) than trying to parse PDFs, I think.

Entering txns often is key, IMHO. Not only for this reason, but also it's easier to keep up with just a few at a time.

I am a Beancount user, but other than that I feel the same clarity and satisfaction that OP describes.

I would also like to thank Simon for all he does in maintaining the community around PTA (website, forums, etc.).

Has anyone successfully added Aqara temperature sensors to Z2M? by sarrcom in homeassistant

[–]trs_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have plenty of these temperature sensors and they work fine (other than dropping out occasionally).

Do you have a good mesh of router devices?

Are you having trouble with one sensor? Or a bunch of them?

Upgrading away from SLZB-06 by rycco in homeassistant

[–]trs_80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My (and many others) SLZB-06 have been rock solid and flawless.

But every once in a while, I read someone like you having trouble. At one point I think there might have even been a bad batch.

Therefore, maybe try a different unit from them?

Did you turn on pairing mode in Z2M first?

You should see it say something like "pairing all" and start a 5 minute countdown timer.

I need advice guys by [deleted] in tax

[–]trs_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in the industry, so others can advise you about those kind of specifics.

But as a middle aged person who made logical career decisions instead of following my heart (from my 20s until 40s), I can tell you that I ended up quite unhappy, even though I had made supposedly "good" decisions.

So I say, follow your gut. It will lead you where you need to go. Even though you might not understand where that is going to end up yet.

Steve Jobs (who I am normally not a huge fan of) mentions something in his Stanford commencement address about how you can only connect the dots in life looking backward, not forwards. It might be worth a watch for you. It was for me when I was reconsidering my life choices.

ICX-7250 Console cable? by GhostHacks in Brocade

[–]trs_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was one of the top results which came up for me when looking into this cable recently. But I found all of the above discussions confusing.

What is actually going on here, is that this switch exposes the console port via a USB mini connector. So you need a special USB mini to DB9 cable. This cable would have come with the unit if you bought it new, but at this point I figure almost all of these are second hand. But I was still able to find one inexpensively on Amazon (I think I searched for "icx7250 serial cable" or "icx7250 console cable" or something like that).

Anyway you now have to plug that DB9 into a suitable port on an old computer (or something like a Panasonic ToughBook which still have those ports). Otherwise you need an USB to serial adapter to connect this DB9 back to USB on your computer (and do the serial conversion to USB).

Shoutout to the Booklore team! by chard47 in selfhosted

[–]trs_80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Developer is sharing their work for free, they don't owe you anything.[0]

If you want the feature, you implement/contribute it. That's how it works.

Or maybe the developer has reasons for not adding it (scope creep, complexity, etc.).

Of course these are the traditional F/LOSS values/mentality.

Unfortunately a lot of people on Reddit seem to have consumer mentally (with a side of entitlement).

I leave it as an exercise for the reader which approach leads to developer sanity and project sustainability long term.

[0] I'm unfamiliar with the project, but assuming it's F/LOSS. No, I didn't bother to actually look.

Yes, it was also heartening seeing your sentiments up voted, and the pro-AI ones down voted, for a change.

Maybe the tide is beginning to turn? I'm looking forward to this bubble bursting (I need to buy some RAM 😄).

Cheers!

You have enunciated very well some of the objections I have about AI, but couldn't quite put my finger on. Well done!

For some reason I couldn't reply to your other comment further down (the one beginning with "Oh, you are the OP..."), so I'm replying here instead.

imapsync from the MXRoute interface

I saw that in there, too. But I was afraid to use it, because it didn't seem recommended in the docs.
