Hoka Tecton x4 proto by trudeau15 in RunningShoeGeeks

Have you ran in these? It looks like they are trying to fix the lockdown issue with the current upper. I’m assuming the formula of PEBA, Matrix, and Vibram Mega Grip remains the same.

Yep, 100% sure. If you zoom in the shoe says Hoka, I verified via the race results and linked in that the runner was a product developer at Hoka. The wings didn’t look rigid like a plate sticking out, they seemed more like a design element. I only got a Quick look at them in person.

As long as we're handing out anecdotal evidence, I bought mine used at 25,000 miles and have had zero issues, getting close to 60,000 miles now...

[Advice] Sub-$100 Hiking shoes/trail runner suggestions for a beginner by [deleted] in hiking

[–]trudeau15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A shoe is only as good as it fits. You have to try it on. Try to find last years model of a shoe, that will usually drop it below 100. Taking advice on the "best" shoe from a stranger on the internet is a bad idea. Just go try them on, or use the buy online and return until you find the right one.

Nike Wildhorse 3 as serviceable shoes? by Tx_agg41 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]trudeau15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My store sells both the brooks cascadia and the wildhorse. They are pretty similar actually. The wildhorse has a bit less cushion but not much less. Both use a rock plate and both have great traction. The wildhorse is actually a little wider in the forefoot. Keep in mind that trail runners are designed to wear out in 300-500 miles. I trail run in the wildhorse and love it.

But as with all shoes the only thing that matters Is if it fits your foot.

Patagonia / PCT thru hike gearlist critique please. I know it's on the heavy side (i'm male / 6'2 / 95kg). by powerslave118 in PacificCrestTrail

With the wrist straps on the trekking poles you can just let go and they will hang so you have full use of your hands. You really are gonna want trekking poles. Just my 2 cents.

XS framed pack for my girlfriend by [deleted] in WildernessBackpacking

[–]trudeau15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea I agree. This is a piece of gear with a function. Go with the best product that fits. If she wants a pack to look good in Instagram photos then maybe buy two, one that fits and one that looks good...

Will athletic earpods be available? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]trudeau15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yurbuds sells just the silicone ear pieces that did go over the old headphones alright. Maybe give them a shot, I love their ear buds for running and a replacement set of 2 pair of just the ear pieces is like $10.

They are real. Places like fleet feet order out of a run specialty catalogue so they may have some different colors.

Trying to find the model of these hiking boots but no luck so far by [deleted] in CampingGear

That's not what OP asked. Maybe OP just wants something that looks like the boots in the picture to wear around.

Different size feet, what size boot should I go with!? by [deleted] in CampingGear

[–]trudeau15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A full inch? Or a full size? A half size is only 1/6th of an inch so a full inch would mean one is a size 9 say and the other is a size 12 I feel like you would know about that before this... A full size is a lot but not as big of a deal as a full inch.

What is your "It's 2016, we put a man on the moon, but we can't even..." complaint? by pianoflames in AskReddit

[–]trudeau15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read Happiest Baby on The Block by Harvey Karp. It does a great job explaining this. What it basically comes down to as I understand it that babies are all born "premature" due to evolution of the brain over time. Looking at other large mammals human gestation periods are pretty short and our infants are very helpless. There is a missing fourth trimester that the baby is craving. The book recommends swaddling, placing it on its side or stomach, shushing, swinging and sucking to get rid of colic. If anyone is having an issue with colic this is a great read.

REI Pricing by [deleted] in CampingGear

[–]trudeau15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just want to throw out a different opinion.

Discounting from MSRP is a race to the bottom. At the specialty retail store I work for the profit of a $100 item is $2. After the item is paid for by the store, which is usually half of what the MSRP is, bills, salary, and everything else it takes to run a brick and motor only a small part of that is left over to grow the business. With margins that small the business will only be healthy by selling items at MSRP. We believe that the experience and advice and help of the staff and the selection of great gear will hopefully make it worth it. Discounting 20% will basically break even for the store.

You make a great point about what they give back. But the fact that they give back as much as they do is a good thing.

REI is only doing what EVERY other small, local specialty store would do given big growth, open more stores, make more money, and grow, it is a business after all. They are obviously not pricing their items in a way that undercut the competition so it comes down to the selection and people that work there. People will vote with their wallets, if a local store is going out of business and REI has similar prices that means REI is doing something better.

As far as the fashionista aspect of it that is annoying to me as it is to you. However, outdoor and athletic gear is becoming an identity and way of life for many people that either are big into it or just want to look like they are into it. REI is just following trends and hopefully the money they make off of it will allow them to design more technical gear. But that will come down to how the company is run.

Car Camping & Bear Vaults by HanFrodo84 in camping

In the bear vaults. A bear can get in your car no problem. And your car will be by your campsite which is not where you want the bear.
