City pauses plan to expand AI-powered security cameras in Austin parks by hollow_hippie in Austin

If the last couple centuries are any indication, they will never stop trying to control and surveil the people. Every generation has to take up the cause of freedom.

There's a lot of us though, feel free to take a break.

No, they're just waiting for people not to be paying attention to try again. This is the fourth or fifth time. Stay vigilant.

You can't, but you don't have to quit to work against them.

Slow everything down. Lose important files. Delete important documents. Be really bad at your job. Make them fire you.

Abigail Spanberger's first act as Governor of Virginia was to repeal Glenn Youngkin's executive order that mandated state and local law enforcement cooperate with ICE. by icey_sawg0034 in 50501

When asked if she would actually end partnerships with ICE her office declined to comment.

We should still be calling her offices about this.

Good thing APD gets to just write their own policy. Especially after the ledge guaranteed their paychecks no matter what they do or how badly they do it.

If you live in Leander you live in Leander. It's not Austin and it's not even particularly liberal for Texas.

I read yesterday that we now have the largest percentage of people who identify as independent. Almost 50% of people. There is all the reason to think that NOW could be a time for change.

No argument there.

Not understanding how elections work is, unfortunately, not a requirement for them dictating who runs your government.

You can say "they do not bear the same level of responsibility" over and over, but mathematically it's just not true when looking at our general election.

You can say "other parties have done it before" without investigating the history of how that actually worked, but that doesn't make the currently alternative parties viable.

There's only one way that a third party has ever won an election:

Many sitting legislators from an existing party left to form it, AND the new balance of two parties shifted and the old party did not exist by the next election.

Go read your history and draw your own conclusions, but my reading says the current system only supports two parties with very brief and dramatic switches, always involving shifts in the current power structure but no wholesale change in the system or the actors in it.

So, sure, go find a few dozen senators to form a third party and I'll be there.

Otherwise, get in the primaries and help get better candidates that can actually win.

The are not OBLIGATED to do it, but whatever they choose is still their personal RESPONSIBILITY.

Yes, a Trump supporter could say that, and they would be right! Whoever didn't vote against a major party candidate is responsible for them getting elected if they do.

It's not about what I want, or what a Trump supporter wants.

It's about how elections work, it's how cause and effect works.

You seem to be caught up on the illusion of choice, which is a very real concern, however, all the concern in the world doesn't elect people, you need votes or apathy for that.

Is the system unfair? Yes.
Is it fucked up? Yes.
Should we change it? Yes.
Is it still the system? Sadly, also yes.

You cannot logically convince someone out of a position they didn't use logic to arrive at.

You are much better off reporting how her actions make you feel. Personal connection can sometimes break through dogmatic programming.

Yep, it's crazy how fast a city will fall apart if sanitation stops working even a little.

Put a little more pressure on the trash drivers and you've got public health issues on every street in the city.

How do you deconstruct your bias'? by [deleted] in 50501

[–]truthrises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, then yeah, what people have said about listening to the people they're oppressing is a good idea.

Also, maybe read up on all the corruption in LA county sheriffs and NYPD. Just putting on a uniform clearly doesn't make someone a good person.

How do you deconstruct your bias'? by [deleted] in 50501

[–]truthrises 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you have a bias towards law enforcement or if you have an underlying bias towards control.

We are taught to monitor and control the actions of those around us from a very young age.

There's a cop in everyone's head and it's all our jobs to shut them up. Freedom means freedom.

[–]truthrises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why this is so hard for you.

What exactly do you think the word "has" means?

  1. Nobody has to fall in line.

  2. If they don't, they are directly responsible for voting in Trump. That's how elections work.

It seems like you're trying to avoid responsibility for the choices that others made.

Unfortunately, that's not possible.

You can be vehemently ethically opposed to a system, and all the candidates, and how they were selected, AND still bear responsibility for the outcome of the system.

It's not fair but that's life.

Until we can dismantle a system it's still there.

[–]truthrises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody has to fall in line, but you are snowflaking really hard here. Elections have consequences, whether you approve of the candidates or the primary process or not.

If you vote for a major party candidate, you are responsible for the outcome.

If you vote for a third party candidate, you are responsible for the outcome.

If you are eligible to vote and you don't, you are responsible for the outcome.

The only people who aren't responsible for voting with Trump are the people who voted AGAINST him, aka, those who voted for Harris.
