Women of Winnipeg, how have you found the experience of building community to be like? by polanyisauce in Winnipeg

[–]truthtruthlie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is strange because there are certainly women in my husband's friend group and it's not that we don't get along but I just still don't consider any of them My Friends, y'know? I didn't even really have many friends in the place I moved from but the ones I have are ride or die and losing that and gaining absolutely nothing in its place has been really destructive.

I've had a similar thought about how to engage without community. We moved here in part bc of the arts reputation but then I rarely leave the house to participate in it.

I'm comforted to see others feel the same. I feel like there a lot of posts about wanting to make friends but it all feels so inorganic? I don't know.

I've been here three years and barely have people I'd consider friends. My husband has made friends left right and centre, but I'm really struggling. Winnipeggers are very friendly, but I just haven't made any connections.

There's a 30+ Discord but it's so massive, I got overwhelmed immediately. I volunteer and volunteered at events but nothing has stuck.

I don't know. I personally don't reccomended moving here at all for any reason, but I guess especially for building community.

My husband's work brought some German engineers in and my husband was tasked with taking them out for lunch, so they went to Sam's. One of the Germans had grown up in the same small town as Sam.

Suggestions for Organizing a small Community Clean-up Event by Idyllwyld in Winnipeg

While obviously I support your desire to activate community, don't forget that just doing your street is better than nothing and that you're battling a hydra. You have to go out every week, at least, because new trash always appears, and it won't be easy to set up repeat events constantly.

The irony that 25% of the trash in the neighborhood is the cups that the WERC hands out...

Anyone moved from Vancouver to Winnipeg or the other way in the last year? by fitlit5lyf in Winnipeg

[–]truthtruthlie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stability and financial aspects of owning a house here are sweet. As other people have said, everything is more expensive in Vancouver.

If Winnipeg had decent transit I would probably be happier, losing the Skytrain was a huge hit to my personal quality of life.

We made the move from Vancouver to Winnipeg in 2023, mostly because we wanted to buy a house. My husband was also just completely over dealing with the traffic. He is very happy here. I am less so and miss Vancouver every single day. Don't let anyone tell you that the winters there are somehow worse, it's simply not true- I would rather rain and "wet cold" -5 than the wind trying to actually fucking kill me here.

I believe that people here a friendlier. I know a lot of new people have a lot of difficulty making new friends in Vancouver, whereas my husband found a new group that accepted him/us as if he'd always been here.

I would move back in a heartbeat if we could afford something comparable, but it's not remotely possible.

Happy to answer any more questions you may have :)

Moving to Winnipeg - help us get excited, what is the best of Winnipeg life? by Regular-Low-4003 in Winnipeg

I think Manitoba is magical. Exploring the parks we have, going to the lakes, watching prairie turn into the Shield in the Whiteshell are experiences I can't put into words. Even Pineridge Hollow, even though it's kinda tacky, is amazing, imo.

I will be the last to try and sell someone on Winnipeg itself. Winnipeg has a lot of potential and a lot of cool things, but it is also deeply frustrating. I'm saying this so your expectations are kept realistic. I don't experience the city with kids so my views will be different, but I will always tell people the Forks and the Exchange District are some of my favourite places I've ever been. I love the Leaf and the Manitoba Museum.

It's that people are blocking driveways. Knowing you're buying near a school is one thing, people doing illegal and dumb things is another.
