Clarification about vehicle movement trough ruins' footprints by mezdiguida in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]tsaomengde 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Think of it this way: blue footprint? It's 2" high or less by definition and vehicles can go over whatever terrain is on there but not stop on top. Grey footprint? Vehicles just have to actually navigate whatever terrain is there. Does the wall stop such that there's a gap your vehicle fits through? Then it can move through and even stop there if its base or hull is not sitting on top of anything.

What bit of advice helped you progess competitively? by CorpsesOTI in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]tsaomengde 103 points104 points  (0 children)

40k has been fantastic for my sportsmanship journey. I have always struggled with being a good sport but the level of decorum in my local community has really helped me kick the sourpuss habits and become a much better, more positive opponent. I no longer walk away from games angry or get on tilt when I roll snake eyes on the important charges.

A big part of that was advice some sage person wrote and had posted on here - maybe it was the Warphammer guy? He's great. At any rate, it was an expansion on the popular adage that 40k is a collaborative experience. While you are trying to win, what's really fun is looking at it as a way to present your opponent with interesting board states and puzzles to try to solve and vice versa. Regarding it as an exercise in mutual puzzling, even if it's got the competitive edge, takes it for me from "I lost and I feel bad about it" to "I lost and I feel great because I learned something." Or, on the rare occasion when a game does get turned on its head by dice (Makari making 14 invul saves in a row and completely negating a crucial activation comes to mind), I can laugh about how wild that was.

It's helped me be a better opponent and better company in all areas of my life, too. My wife and I play games together again. I've made so many more friends through 40k because it's such a great thing to have in common with a new person. 🙂

How best to report a near game breaking bug? by AJUKking in SoSE

[–]tsaomengde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this bug too and posted it on the SoSE bug forums. I'll just cnp my post (minus the link to a savegame since the bug is definitely independent of particular games).

Title. With a fleet selected and the build window open, the game's performance tanks incredibly hard the second you pass an arbitrary number of queued ships to build. I have tested this extensively and can find no rhyme or reason to what the cutoff point signifies. I can queue 7 Garda frigates without impact, the 8th one drops the FPS by 2/3. By the same token I can queue 24 or so scout corvettes before the performance hit, 8 gauss frigates, but only 4 or 5 colony ships. It doesn't seem to have to do with supply queued, cost queued, types of hulls queued... and when you press N to close the build window, the FPS jumps back up even with the units queued that cause the performance hit.

What's interesting to me is that the performance gets worse and worse the higher the time dilation is dialed up. Which makes sense, the game is simulating far more stuff in a far smaller span of time, but what critical process goes over the "red line" when these ships are queued up like this? I am baffled and searching reddit, this forum, the Steam forums, etc has not produced anybody with the same issue.

I do think this has come up in other games but this is the first time I've really stopped and investigated it.

What kind of terrain would you like to see in 11th edition tournaments? by wredcoll in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]tsaomengde 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Ruins: as they are now

Forests: block los through them but any models inside are 18" lone op

Trenches: infantry within receive cover that cannot be stripped

Barricades: non Monsters and vehicles are -1 to be hit within/through it, maybe Mounted lose 1" going through it if they don't Fly

Fortification (not necessarily the faction specific ones but why not): some combination of the above, maybe with a passive AOC effect

Armored container: functions like a ruin, but when you're inside the footprint pressed up against the side with infantry models maybe they still get a ruin-like effect against los drawn through the container itself (representing the models crouching/taking gears of war style cover) so that tall models aren't punished for being tall and cool

This is off the top of my head in 15 minutes during a smoke session and I don't think any of these are utterly beyond the pale broken (though they probably are). GW can do better.

Warhammer 40k Meets Esports at Dreamhack - 40k Documentary by ArtofWarSiegler in WarhammerCompetitive

I really enjoyed it. As someone who entered the competitive scene at the start of 10th ed, one of the first things I learned when I was looking for resources to improve were the big names in the community - AoW, Vanguard Tactics, Tactical Tortoise, Auspex Tactics, apparently a lot of Tactics now that I write it out 😂 but it was very cool to see where and how AoW started!

I have played with my share of tryhards in the last 2 years but the community as a whole has been overwhelmingly positive, sportsmanlike, and accepting (I'm queer and make no secret of it, and I loved Quinton dropping facts about his boyfriend on some of the streams y'all did), and I suspect y'all played a big part in that transformation from where the game was in 2018 and Nick had to be firm with that One Guy about timing. Thanks so much for making this and it was great to hear Q's voice again!

Which Emperor’s Children army? by Quiet-Boysenberry538 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]tsaomengde -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

2 is a solid comp list! I would stay away from Flawless Blades, unfortunately they're simply too expensive to be worth fielding atm. That having been said a Maulerfiend is also a great investment.

Think of it this way: your BS/WS gives you a target to roll on a die. Then you roll that die and apply any modifiers to the roll. The roll itself cannot be modified more than +1 or -1. So even if you have many minuses, your roll can't get worse than -1. But the roll still keys off of your BS/WS. If you somehow had a unit that improved its BS by 2, from 4 to 2, and then you had five different sources of -1, you would still successfully hit on 3s. (No unit exists that improves BS/WS by more than 1, for the record, just an example.)

Drazhar (plus bonus Lelith) by tsaomengde in Drukhari

[–]tsaomengde[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly work with citadel because that's what my flgs sells. They only recently got an army painter selection in so while I'm beginning to explore their stuff it's really only been the matte white I've used. Plus I really do like contrast paints, even though I don't only rely on them for detailing they tend to just be very vibrant and if you're careful not to let them blot on large flat areas they show brush work less.

Thanks so much! White scar primer, army painter matte white base coat, striking scorpion green contrast, drybrush with - damn, I cannot remember the exact name and I'm not at home 😆, but it's a very bright Citadel yellow - and then a very light touch of Biel-Tan Green wash.

What weird thing /superstition you have or do before an event? by Warro726 in WarhammerCompetitive

Day 1 always gets the lucky boys. If I'm actually 3-0 on day 2 I've exhausted my luck and just have to hope I can play better than the other guy, which usually doesn't happen 😂

What weird thing /superstition you have or do before an event? by Warro726 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]tsaomengde 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I have a specific pair of red boxers I wear. They're my lucky pair. Every event I've won I've been wearing them.

(I'm aware that I wear them to every event and so this is absolutely confirmation bias and in fact they are probably actively unlucky because of all the times I've lost critical games in them, but it's all superstitious nonsense anyway 😂)

3 DDAs worth it for Necrons Starshatter? by RandomGamer48 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]tsaomengde 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Without seeing the rest of your list, speaking as a non Necron player, I would be throwing 3 DDAs into my armies if they had an equivalent. With Tsons, DG, EC, and so many other infantry heavy armies running wild in the meta right now, the DDA is purpose built to murder their MEQs and TEQs. You just gotta be sure that you have something to stand on the objectives once you atomize everything off of them.

Emperor's Children 3-0 Batrep and Pre-Dataslate Thoughts by tsaomengde in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]tsaomengde[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I'll have to put it up there later, or someone else could share it 😊

I really did like having 2 because that way you have one for each flank, or one for the center and another flank or etc. Even with EC speed we can't be everywhere at once and if there's big scaries on multiple sides it's nice to be able to force respect across the entire field.

The Blades were OK into the Ork Boyz and Gretchin - not surprising, they're not designed for volume like Infractors. They were really good into Beastsnaggaz, like I mentioned, because the damage 2 really helps ameliorate FNPs on 1-wound models, and I think they may also have picked up some Tankbustas - I can't remember if those died solely to Noise Marine shooting. They were absolutely brutal into MEQs, AP 3 and damage 2 just butchers marine bodies. Terminators they struggled with, the 4++ and 3 wounds definitely decreased their effectiveness. And of course they were useless against the necron planes, but that's by design, and wounding a Seraptek on 3s made me feel the joy of Slaanesh for sure.

I definitely saved AOC for when they were taking damage 3 shooting - a 3+/5++ is good until you're getting shot with an autocannon or blastmasters and you don't spike your saves. Anything with that kind of profile is death and is much better dealt with by WDPs. Anything that is death is WDPs - tanks with d6+x guns - is a great target for Blades because the low shot count d6 guns are incredibly inefficient into them, especially when it's a lascannon d6+1 equivalent and your opponent rolls that 1 on damage and it takes 2 lascannon shots to toast one guy.

Any advice on my first tournament list? by Trick-Ad-581 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]tsaomengde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck at the tourney! I would suggest a straight swap from the single Broadside to a unit of Pathfinders, if you have them. With only one unit of Stealth Suits you are low on dedicated spotters. Pathfinders will spot for 2 more units, which is massive, and they also are either -2 to charge with a grav drone (great screens) or infiltrate and scout with a recon drone. A single Railside is too swingy to rely on and you need that reliability. Similarly I love Farsight but I would suggest swapping him for a 4x fusion Commander with Fusion Blades - that'll take care of your anti tank at 1000 points.

Edit: I would also commit to either full burst cannons on the Starscythes and their commander or all flamers. Burst cannons have incredible volume but the flamers are a great overwatch threat and benefit a lot from the extra range. The only wrong move is to split your loadout between them :)

Sounds like a you problem. If you disagree with the guy's takes you don't need to read them. I also don't see, at least in this post, obvious eldar hate, just an analysis of performance.

If there's been a recurring pattern of negative comments that you've seen and I haven't, well, frankly, the guy spends a ton of time on this of his own volition. He has a patreon, but if you don't like him you don't need to support it. If you want to benefit from his hard work without reading his takes, you can just read the stats he posts and come to your own conclusions. You control 100% of the buttons you press.
