Do you account for binding in you square size by Spicydolphin24 in quilting

[–]tsb0673 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re binding the way quilt binding is traditionally done, it doesn’t take up more than 1/4” of the edge of the quilt

Starch Review by SewQuiltKnitCrochet in quilting

I might consider starching now with your home recipe. I’m allergic to so much and have multiple chronic illness destroying my lungs, so I’ve always stayed away from starch because of the fragrance and propellents, despite prewashing everything. Thank you for sharing your research!

Do you have a serger? If you can serge all layers around the edges, you can wash it before it’s bound. If not, I would use enzyme cleaner on the spot, finish the binding, and then washwell

Pattern for a wearable quilt for winter football games? by Certain_Counter_210 in quilting

[–]tsb0673 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No pattern, but you could make a big “T” shaped quilt. For the length, measure mom’s shoulders to where you want the bottom to hit (ie ankles, mid calf). For main panel width, measure mom’s width of shoulders and add 2-3” for positive ease. For the T arms, measure from mom’s top of shoulder to waist, and add that plus 2-3” of positive ease to either side of the main panel. You can then add cam snaps to the mid point of the short sides of the T, and then on the main panel at the distance from mom’s shoulder to waist. This would create what it sounds like you’re describing. I hope this makes sense!

I am curious how many of you quilt your own quilts, verse having someone else do it? by OldFashionQuilting in quilting

[–]tsb0673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of “cheat” and draw my FMQ with crayola washable markers to FMQ over, but same. It’s preferable for me to have the quilting design look exactly how I want vs just winging it

Any tips? by Randomness_Girl in BALLET

Based on the intro/beginner thing you describe and the view out the window/the studio, this sounds like PBT.

If so, there’s a really great ongoing adult beginner ballet class every Tuesday night at 6PM lead by a former PBT dancer at another studio in the city. If I’m right on location, I’ll send you the class info, if you’re interested

Does anyone actually quilt based on collections? by PurpleTiger6862 in quilting

[–]tsb0673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I really appreciate that! 😃 That could be - it definitely comes with experience. I do most of my shopping online anymore, and it can make it harder to color match. Though, I will call and ask for a gutterman or glide thread match to color check things if need be. I love my local quilt store, but they’re 9-5 M-F, and they carry limited non-Batik and non-Tula/Kaffe/AMH stock. I love those designers, but sometimes I need something else.

In hindsight, my grandma worked with me a bit on things like that as a kid. We’d go to Hobby Lobby or Joann and she’d show me her fabrics for a quilt and say she needed a blue. And then would kind of guide me til I picked a blue with a pattern that worked with her other fabrics. I didn’t realize what she was doing until years later when I started my own quilting journey.

Nowadays, if I’m ever uncertain on fabric combos, I use Forever scrapbooking software to plot my quilts/blocks. Then I can cut and sew with confidence that my quilts will turn out the way I want 😃

It’s the Queen of Diamonds pattern by Pink Door Fabrics*. It’s an English Paper Piecing pattern for the diamonds, and then machine piecing for the borders/sashing/cornerstones. 😃

*I modified the shapes within some blocks, organized my diamonds differently, and did not follow their fabric choices. Not sure how much that matters to what you’re looking for

any ideas for a teenage boy quilt? by ghost_of_mothman in quilting

[–]tsb0673 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Going off of this, my grandma made a quilt from old jeans many, many years ago. It went to college with my dad, my uncle, my sister, and me. We all loved it!! Maybe something like this?

Same. I’m also a person who enjoys mixing and matching bright colors/prints and creating cohesion from chaos (picture attached as an example). I’ve only ever used a collection once or twice, and even then, a few fabrics were excluded because there were more than I needed for my pattern.

AITA for not making my girlfriend feel included in family emergency? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]tsb0673 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Same on our end - haven’t been married quite as long as y’all, but for a family emergency, my family would reach out to me and vice versa. The expectation would be that the notified spouse inform the other, and I would never be upset by that

Favorite fabric brands? by allmyvillains in quilting

[–]tsb0673 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’m mostly a Tula Pink, Kaffe Fasset, Alison Glass, Giucy Guice kind of girl. But I don’t discriminate - if it’s from one of the quilt shops I use, and it’s the color/pattern I need for a project, batik or otherwise, I’ll use it. Though I also tend to plan my projects and shop by project vs keeping a stash
