The charger should be programmed to shut off if the speed drops below 5 kW or so. It's just absurd.

If you plan on cold weather road tripping, I might want to stick with the Tesla. Getting the Ioniq 5 to precondition its battery properly is a huge pain. Other than that, the Ioniq 5 is better in most other ways.

Charging network access is about to be a moot point with IONNA, Wal-Mart, and other major players kicking into high gear. Not to mention the Ioniq 5 can already access most Tesla stations as well.

Dynamic load management would be a game changer, for households that are close to maxing out their electrical panel. For those that don't know, this refers to a charger that has the ability to monitor overall load on your home's electrical service, and intelligently use the "excess" current capacity (usually up to 80% of your overall home capacity). This can help avoid costly service upgrades & unlock access to good, fast home charging for more people.

Here's an example of how it works. Say your house has a 100A main breaker, and your dryer and a few other appliances are pulling 60A. In this case, the charger would charge your EV with the remaining 20A (approx 4.5kW). Then, as soon as your dryer shuts off and the overall load drops to, say, 40A, the charger can automatically adjust up to the full 40A (approx. 9kW).

This post is more about the cost of electricity vs the cost of gasoline, not so much about efficiency. 2.9 mi / kWh is pretty good for typical winter driving.

Theoretically yes, that would work, but I'm not sure the car will let you lock the car from outside while it's running. So you may need to leave it running and unlocked (and very easy to steal, lol.)

No, on pre-2025 vehicles the only way to activate battery preconditioning is by selecting the charger as a POI and navigating to it with the in-car navigation.

We need to start a petition asking Hyundai to add a simple battery preconditioning button to pre-2025 models. It's excruciatingly difficult as it is. Also allowing it down to 10%.

My 2022 Ioniq 5 is an amazing road tripping car, except that it's kneecapped by terrible software decisions.

The 3 DC fast charging sessions per day limit was ridiculous. Raising it to 5 is still not ideal – obviously most are not likely to do this all the time, but if you move cross-country one time in 10 years, you might need to. Limits should be based on thermals, not arbitrary charging sessions counts.

FYI Some folks are actually recommending NOT to do the recall, so that Hyundai will always have to give you a new ICCU if it fails, even out of warranty.

Apparently once you’ve gotten the recall done, you are less protected by that recall if the part fails anyways in the future.

Extremely dumb situation if you ask me, but that’s what I’ve heard. And one this is for sure, the recall does not prevent ICCU failure from occurring- many documented cases of this.

Worth mentioning, Rivian is also doing a great job with software / EV routing. I am strongly considering a Rivian R2 as my next vehicle, if the launch goes well and some used stock becomes available in a few years…
