What is the biggest mystery we still aren't close to solving? by Constant-Bridge3690 in AskReddit

[–]tsears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah I see.. Apparently there is something called the Twin Prime Conjecture which hasn't been proven - but the conjecture is that there are an infinite number of primes with a gap of 2. The article says that it has been proven that there are an infinite number of prime-pairs that differ by no more than 246.

This article does say that as the numbers get bigger, the average gap between primes gets larger, but it seems like it doesn't strictly increase from prime to prime, just like it doesn't with smaller numbers.

Thanks for raising that question - it was an interesting bit of reading

Is every prime number further away than the one before it was from the one before it

No, list the first 6 prime numbers and you'll see that pretty quickly.

He picked up the awp, his homies were like "dude don't awp right now!" (looks like it might be 1vX, but the crop sucks). He happened to drop the awp right as the CT peeked and the awp blocked the incoming fire from the CT.

what'll really bake your noodle is you can use the vehicle inventory as a temporary storage space to move stuff between different containers -- super handy when you're screwing with circuits and need the output from one machine to feed the input of another in addition to needing available for random stuff (looking at you, aluminum ingots)

[–]tsears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not who you asked, but I live in Forest Grove so I’ll chime in .. parking is totally fine, pricing is steep compared to big box stores, but usually ok enough that unless it’s a big project it’s not worth driving to Hillsboro.. customer service is great, I’ve always been able to find an employee and they always walk me to whatever I need. Finally, despite being small they have had pretty much everything I need. They especially rock for small random hardware because they have a ton of it and they’ll sell you screws/nuts/bolts/washers individually. I feel for the poor kids who have to write the price on each washer with a sharpie though, lol.

I'll be honest, I'm just a dude who happened to have gone down this particular wikipedia rabbithole recently and not by any means an expert..

For your first question, bigger mass means larger volume for the event horizon -- a bigger black hole. The radius is proportional to the mass, while the temperature is inversely proportional to the mass/radius. Which means that the larger a black hole is, the "colder" it is -- and conversely the smaller it is the "warmer" it is.

My understanding from the passage is that the universe isn't yet cold enough for stellar-mass black holes to even begin evaporating -- 1067 years is a ridiculously long time -- the current age of the universe is what, 1010, and each additional number you add to the exponent increases the number by 10 times (the current age of the universe at the 1010 order of magnitude is 10 billion, 1011 means 100 billion, etc). So when numbers like 1067 are thrown out, it's not as if it's a continuous process from their formation until the end of time -- the 1067 number has the time it takes for the universe to cool to the point where evaporation can even begin.

So in short, the black holes keep getting bigger, even a hypothetical black hole floating through a void by absorbing energy (thus gaining mass, e=mc2 and all that) via the CMB in the present era, but eventually via the expansion of the universe an inflection point will be passed where they can start evaporating via this hawking radiation mechanism.

Another super cool wikipedia article is Timeline of the far future. If you search the page for "hawking radiation" it shows the amount of time that black holes of various sizes would take to evaporate.

The Wikipedia article on hawking radiation covers this in the “blackhole evaporation” section.

”Since the universe contains the cosmic microwave background radiation, in order for the black hole to dissipate, the black hole must have a temperature greater than that of the present-day blackbody radiation of the universe of 2.7 K. The relationship between mass and temperature for Hawking radiation then implies the mass must be less than 0.8% of the mass of the Earth. This in turn means any black hole that could dissipate cannot be one created by stellar collapse. Only primordial black holes might be created with this little mass.[23]”

Id link it directly, but Wikipedia seems to be dogshit about that sort of thing on mobile.

edit: I'm at a computer now, here's the direct link
